Estonia is armed with American rifles caliber 5,56 and 7,62-mm
The Estonian Ministry of Defense has signed a contract with the American company Lewis Machine & Tool Company (LMT), according to which the Estonian army will receive 16 thousand automatic rifles in 5,56 and 7,62 mm calibers within two years. The contract value is $ 75 million, deliveries will begin in early 2020.
It should be noted that currently in the Estonian army there are very different small arms in service: Israeli automatic rifles Galil and Negev light machine guns chambered for 5,56 x 45 mm, obtained from Norway and Germany from the presence of automatic rifles chambered for 7,62х51 mm GXNXXX3 and G3XXXXXXUMX and G3XXXXX from Sweden - Ak 4 (same G4). There are a number of new German 3-mm automatic rifles G5,56 and MGGNUMX light machine guns.
In order to replace small arms, the Estonian Ministry of Defense announced a tender in 2017, in which the American company Lewis Machine & Tool Company (LMT) won in December 2018, which will supply the Estonian army with MLCPS automatic rifles (chambered for NATO 5,56 x 45 mm) and CQBMWS (chambered for NATO 7,62 x 51 mm).
Rifles are variations of the widely-used AR family of the Stoner construction, but with a patented upper part of the receiver, made of a single monolithic aluminum construction, which ensures its increased rigidity.
The Scout Battalion (Scoutspataljon) of the 1 Infantry Brigade of the Estonian Army, stationed in Tapa (now armed with the Israeli Galil, received in the early 90), will be the first to receive new rifles. The rifles will then be fully equipped with the 1 and 2 infantry brigades. It is planned to equip Kaysteylit (people's militia), police, border guards and units of the Estonian Ministry of Justice with weapons.
