BMP CV-90 and its modifications

At the very beginning of the eighties, the Swedish military department began to look for a replacement for the Pbv 302 armored personnel carriers. The armored vehicles that were not bad for their time had been in service for almost twenty years and were no longer modern. The Swedish Defense Ministry initially planned to buy something foreign. For this, several cars of the same weight category were ordered from the UK. Moreover, they were distinguished by purpose. Take Scorpion for example - in the English classification it was listed as light reconnaissance a tank. It is unlikely that such a machine can be made the successor to the old armored personnel carrier. Nevertheless, the ordered cars in 1984 were tested at the training ground and the Swedish military made a number of conclusions. At the same time, large-scale purchases of British equipment did not follow: the Swedes nevertheless decided to make a new armored vehicle for the infantry on their own, although taking into account foreign developments. This decision was fully consistent with the principle of independence in the defense industry, adopted at that time in Sweden. And so it began история armored vehicles of the family known as Strf 90 or CV-90.

The design of the new machine was entrusted to NV Utveckling AB. It should be noted that according to the results of tests of imported vehicles, the Swedish military came to the conclusion that it was necessary to reconsider their requirements. First of all, instead of the BTR, they wanted to get a BMP with the possibility of creating other types of equipment on its base. In accordance with the approach taken in Sweden to the design of armored vehicles, Utveckling AB has concluded contracts with other companies. So, from the Bofors was required to make the tower and a full range of weapons, and the company Hägglunds was appointed responsible for the chassis. Thus, only the overall project coordination and the production of an experimental batch of five cars remained at HB Utveckling AB.

Requirements to ensure the possibility of creating on a single basis several machines have affected the development of the chassis. On the one hand, it was necessary to do something new, but on the other hand, it was necessary to preserve the acceptable cost of the finished machine. Therefore, part of the units was borrowed from the already manufactured equipment. The chassis of all the Strf 90 family of vehicles has the same layout and is made according to the classic pattern for infantry fighting vehicles. The engine compartment is located in the front of the car on the right. On the left side of the internal volume, respectively, placed the workplace of the driver. The fighting compartment with the tower installed in it is located in the middle part of the armored vehicle, and the stern part is given under the landing seats.

CV9040 Swedish Army

The power plant of the Strf 90 armored vehicles is based on the 14-cylinder diesel engine Saab Scania DS14 with the HP 550 power. In a single unit with the engine mounted transmission. The X300-5 model, assembled in Sweden under an English license, is equipped with an automatic planetary gearbox, a differential mechanism with hydrostatic transmission and two onboard gears. The machine is controlled by a steering wheel, gear lever and pedals. Due to the use of the X300-5 transmission, the Strf 90 family of cars have good maneuverability characteristics and are able to make turns with an arbitrary radius. With the DS-14 engine, the machines of the family have a specific power within the 20-25 hp. per ton. At the same time, the Strf 90 armored vehicles can accelerate on a highway to a speed of 70 km / h. In reverse, they “give out” 40-43 km / h.

Protection of the undercarriage and turret of the family is carried out by multi-layered armor. Its design is interesting: the main body is welded from rolled steel sheets. Then on it additional composite sheets are mounted. Their exact design is not disclosed. In addition, an additional modular reservation can be installed on top of the composite modules. Sweden installs German-made AMAP modules on its cars, Norway and Denmark installs MEXAS, and the Netherlands installs the RUAG system. With an additional reservation set, the Strf 90 family can withstand an 30-mm projectile hit from all angles. Frontal projection at the same time has a slightly higher level of protection. Also note the angles of the front armor plates. Thanks to their location, retaining mass, the Swedish engineers were able to slightly improve the protection.

Armament Strf 90 depends on the specific modification. Thus, the CV-9040 basic infantry fighting vehicle is equipped with a turret with a Bofors L40B 70-mm automatic cannon. It was created on the basis of a towed anti-aircraft gun. Of some interest are the modifications of the instrument for installation in the BMP tower. In the original anti-aircraft version, the shells are fed into the cannon from the top, and below there is a window for ejection of spent cartridges. To be used on an infantry fighting vehicle, the gun was simply flipped around its axis. Thanks to this, it was possible to install a feeder for projectiles under the gun, and to throw the cartridge out to the top of the tower. Under the breech of the L70V there is a box magazine on the 24 projectile. The shells are located in its three compartments, each of which can contain eight shells of various types. It is possible to quickly change the type of projectile delivered to the gun - for this, the magazine is equipped with a hydraulic drive. Automation tools allows you to shoot a single, short or long burst. There is also the ability to control the rate of fire from 60 to 400 shots per minute. The queue length is limited only by the capacity of the store. After the last one is used up, the BMP crew must manually charge it. The stock in 216 shells is placed in the fighting compartment: 48 in a mechanized drum and 168 - in the stacks. It takes about 20-25 seconds to load one store compartment. Especially for the L70B gun, several new types of projectiles were developed: sub-caliber armor-piercing, high-explosive fragmentation with a programmable fuse, general purpose tracer, etc. The characteristics of projectiles make it possible to hit almost all types of armored vehicles in the world, with the exception of tanks, at a distance of up to a kilometer. Guiding the gun horizontally by turning the tower. Vertical targeting, in turn, is performed using an electro-hydraulic system ranging from -8 ° to + 50 °. It is noteworthy that the dimensions of the breech part of the gun and the volume of the fighting compartment make it possible to raise the barrel and higher, but this possibility was refused to improve the ergonomics of the fighting compartment. And it was planned to entrust the defense from low-flying enemy aircraft and helicopters to another machine of the Strf 90 family.

Additional armament consists of 7,62-mm machine gun, coupled with a gun, with ammunition in 2000 cartridges and smoke grenade launchers. In addition, crews of some CV-9040 infantry fighting vehicles receive RBS-56 Bill anti-missile systems. They can be used by putting out from the hatch of the tower, or from the ground. The possibility of installing ATGM on the machine itself is not provided.

The control of armament is carried out with the help of a unified system incorporating a number of units. Thus, the Simag LV-401 laser rangefinder can measure distances within 200-9990 meters with an accuracy of up to ten meters. The commander has at his disposal periscope sights Sopelem M371. Data from the range finder and sight enter the MYBOF ballistic computer. This device in semi-automatic mode issues to guidance systems weapons necessary amendments. Their calculation takes into account such parameters as wind speed (five options: calm, weak and strong wind on both sides), air temperature (from -50 ° to + 70 °) and ammunition (from -35 ° to + 45 °). Of particular interest are the bodies of fire control. They are a joystick that controls all the necessary parameters. The inclination of the handle in vertical planes is responsible for the rotation of the turret and the angle of the cannon. The angle of the handle affects the speed of turning or lifting. On the top of the joystick - under the thumb - there are buttons for choosing a weapon (gun or machine gun), and the shot is made using a trigger under the index finger. Such joysticks are available at the commander and gunner’s workplaces. When these crew members attempt to simultaneously perform any actions, the automatics do not miss the gunner’s command. At the disposal of the gunner has a periscope sight NTTA, range finder and optical periscopes, aimed in different directions. In addition, the gunner has an additional control knob, which switches the laser rangefinder on and off, as well as a number of other actions.

In addition to the three-man crew of the BMP CV-9040 can carry eight paratroopers. The landing and landing of the assault is made through the door in the stern. Additional hatches are made in the roof and bottom of the troop compartment. Eight soldiers during a trip settle down on folding seats of a simple design. The seats themselves are located on the inner sides of the hull sides. In the early stages of the development of the machine, the possibility of installing seats in the middle of the compartment was considered, but was later abandoned because of a number of drawbacks typical of such an arrangement. On the roof and in the door of the troop compartment there are optical instruments for monitoring the environment.

The CV-9040 BMP was the first machine in the Strf 90 family. A prototype machine with a turret equipped with an 40-mm cannon received an index of Pbv G. An experienced armored vehicle with an index of Pbv L had similar weapons, but a simplified weapon control system. In addition, it was planned to make experimental machines with 25-mm gun, self-propelled anti-aircraft installation, etc. As a result of all the design work, the following modifications of the armored vehicle were created:
- CV-9040. Infantry fighting vehicle with X-NUMX-mm L-40 cannon;

- CV-9030. The export version of the previous machine, equipped with a Bushmaster II 30-mm gun;

- CV-9035. Another export version, armed with a Bushmaster III caliber 35 millimeter;

- CV-90FOV. Reconnaissance vehicle for artillery observers;
- CV-90FCV. A command and control vehicle with a modified troop compartment and additional means of communication;

- CV-90ARV. Repair and recovery vehicle;

- CV-90AMOS. Self-propelled quick-fire mortar. Two 120-mm barrels with automatic loaders are located in the swinging turret;

- CV90120-T The main reason for installing the 120 mm gun on the CV90 was the desire to combine the firepower of the tank and the moving characteristics of the lighter machine. Combat weight CV90120-T is about 35 tons, while the tank weighs almost twice as much.

Machines of the Strf 90 family were supplied to the Swedish armed forces and were also exported. Sweden received about 350 machines of various modifications, Switzerland and the Netherlands have 180-190 units Strf 90, Finland and Norway ordered a little more than a hundred. Denmark, with its 45 machines, closes the CV-90 user list. According to various estimates, the armored vehicles of the Swedish Strf 90 family for the above countries will be relevant within the next 15-20 years. After this period, it is possible to carry out modernization. Judging by the active work in the field of creating a new technology based on the CV-90 chassis, in the future everything will follow exactly this scenario. Currently, Swedish engineers are experimenting with the installation on the CV-90 turret with an 120 caliber millimeter gun and continue to improve the AMOS mortar.

        For the first time, the CV 90-120 tank uses an infrared disguise system. This development was examined at the Royal Research Institute, the copyright of this "technology masking" is the company Hägglunds.
        The external components of the Adaptiv system are hexagonal plates, which give it an unusual appearance. With their help, the tank not only turns into an “invisibility”, but instead shows itself in a thermal imager a false object, a phantom, “drawn” by electronics.
        It happens as follows. The image of the truck is transmitted to the matrix of these components, for example, in the infrared range with real resolution. At a certain range, this “phantom” is reproduced in the thermal imager. In the event of a threat of a military strike, the protection sensors activate the camouflage system. The tank is covered with a cloud of spray aerosols. A capacity of 300 liters of aerosol composition is enough to hold an invisible screen for more than two minutes. The configuration of the tubes is such that the sprayed liquid creates an effect similar to the wavelength in the IR range, between 5 and 25 Mm, resulting in the desired phenomenon of light absorption.
