The design of the new machine was entrusted to NV Utveckling AB. It should be noted that according to the results of tests of imported vehicles, the Swedish military came to the conclusion that it was necessary to reconsider their requirements. First of all, instead of the BTR, they wanted to get a BMP with the possibility of creating other types of equipment on its base. In accordance with the approach taken in Sweden to the design of armored vehicles, Utveckling AB has concluded contracts with other companies. So, from the Bofors was required to make the tower and a full range of weapons, and the company Hägglunds was appointed responsible for the chassis. Thus, only the overall project coordination and the production of an experimental batch of five cars remained at HB Utveckling AB.
Requirements to ensure the possibility of creating on a single basis several machines have affected the development of the chassis. On the one hand, it was necessary to do something new, but on the other hand, it was necessary to preserve the acceptable cost of the finished machine. Therefore, part of the units was borrowed from the already manufactured equipment. The chassis of all the Strf 90 family of vehicles has the same layout and is made according to the classic pattern for infantry fighting vehicles. The engine compartment is located in the front of the car on the right. On the left side of the internal volume, respectively, placed the workplace of the driver. The fighting compartment with the tower installed in it is located in the middle part of the armored vehicle, and the stern part is given under the landing seats.

The power plant of the Strf 90 armored vehicles is based on the 14-cylinder diesel engine Saab Scania DS14 with the HP 550 power. In a single unit with the engine mounted transmission. Protection of the undercarriage and turret of the family is carried out by multi-layered armor. Its design is interesting: the main body is welded from rolled steel sheets. Then on it additional composite sheets are mounted. Their exact design is not disclosed. In addition, an additional modular reservation can be installed on top of the composite modules. Sweden installs German-made AMAP modules on its cars, Norway and Denmark installs MEXAS, and the Netherlands installs the RUAG system. With an additional reservation set, the Strf 90 family can withstand an 30-mm projectile hit from all angles. Frontal projection at the same time has a slightly higher level of protection. Armament Strf 90 depends on the specific modification. Thus, the CV-9040 basic infantry fighting vehicle is equipped with a turret with a Bofors L40B 70-mm automatic cannon. It was created on the basis of a towed anti-aircraft gun. Of some interest are the modifications of the instrument for installation in the BMP tower. In the original anti-aircraft version, the shells are fed into the cannon from the top, and below there is a window for ejection of spent cartridges. To be used on an infantry fighting vehicle, the gun was simply flipped around its axis. Thanks to this, it was possible to install a feeder for projectiles under the gun, and to throw the cartridge out to the top of the tower. Under the breech of the L70V there is a box magazine on the 24 projectile. The shells are located in its three compartments, each of which can contain eight shells of various types. It is possible to quickly change the type of projectile delivered to the gun - for this, the magazine is equipped with a hydraulic drive. Automation tools allows you to shoot a single, short or long burst. There is also the ability to control the rate of fire from 60 to 400 shots per minute. The queue length is limited only by the capacity of the store. After the last one is used up, the BMP crew must manually charge it. The stock in 216 shells is placed in the fighting compartment: 48 in a mechanized drum and 168 - in the stacks. It takes about 20-25 seconds to load one store compartment. Especially for the L70B gun, several new types of projectiles were developed: sub-caliber armor-piercing, high-explosive fragmentation with a programmable fuse, general purpose tracer, etc. The characteristics of projectiles make it possible to hit almost all types of armored vehicles in the world, with the exception of tanks, at a distance of up to a kilometer. It is noteworthy that the dimensions of the breech part of the gun and the volume of the fighting compartment make it possible to raise the barrel and higher, but this possibility was refused to improve the ergonomics of the fighting compartment. And it was planned to entrust the defense from low-flying enemy aircraft and helicopters to another machine of the Strf 90 family.

The control of armament is carried out with the help of a unified system incorporating a number of units. The inclination of the handle in vertical planes is responsible for the rotation of the turret and the angle of the cannon. The angle of the handle affects the speed of turning or lifting. On the top of the joystick - under the thumb - there are buttons for choosing a weapon (gun or machine gun), and the shot is made using a trigger under the index finger. Such joysticks are available at the commander and gunner’s workplaces. When these crew members attempt to simultaneously perform any actions, the automatics do not miss the gunner’s command. At the disposal of the gunner has a periscope sight NTTA, range finder and optical periscopes, aimed in different directions. The CV-9040 BMP was the first machine in the Strf 90 family. A prototype machine with a turret equipped with an 40-mm cannon received an index of Pbv G. An experienced armored vehicle with an index of Pbv L had similar weapons, but a simplified weapon control system. In addition, it was planned to make experimental machines with 25-mm gun, self-propelled anti-aircraft installation, etc. As a result of all the design work, the following modifications of the armored vehicle were created:
- CV-90FCV. A command and control vehicle with a modified troop compartment and additional means of communication;
- CV90120-T The main reason for installing the 120 mm gun on the CV90 was the desire to combine the firepower of the tank and the moving characteristics of the lighter machine. Combat weight CV90120-T is about 35 tons, while the tank weighs almost twice as much.
Machines of the Strf 90 family were supplied to the Swedish armed forces and were also exported. Sweden received about 350 machines of various modifications, Switzerland and the Netherlands have 180-190 units Strf 90, Finland and Norway ordered a little more than a hundred. Denmark, with its 45 machines, closes the CV-90 user list. According to various estimates, the armored vehicles of the Swedish Strf 90 family for the above countries will be relevant within the next 15-20 years. After this period, it is possible to carry out modernization. Judging by the active work in the field of creating a new technology based on the CV-90 chassis, in the future everything will follow exactly this scenario. Currently, Swedish engineers are experimenting with the installation on the CV-90 turret with an 120 caliber millimeter gun and continue to improve the AMOS mortar.
