The number of produced tanks "Merkava"

94
Israeli military historian Oleg Granovsky, who regularly reviews Israeli military-industrial complex, conducted a study in which, comparing sources, he calculated the number tanks Merkava project, released over the entire existence of the program.

The number of produced tanks "Merkava"

At the moment, the IDF and the Israeli Ministry of Defense do not publish official aggregate data on the production volumes of the Mervak MBT production both as a whole and for individual models. At the same time, scattered numbers were often placed in the public domain.

The concept of the Merkava project came to light in 1970, when the government, together with the Ministry of Defense, decided to create its own Israeli tank. The first official photo in the press appeared in 1977, and two years later the tank was officially presented.

Different sources give different estimates of tanks issued

Merkava has 4 versions. At the moment, Merkava-1 has completely abandoned the current forces. According to historian David Edelman for 2017 a year, Merkava-2 completely dropped out of personnel units, and in the reserve units it also almost did not remain. The IDF’s main battle tanks now remain the third and fourth versions of the “chariot” - the name of the tank is translated from Hebrew.

The National Security Studies Institute's (INSS) report on the Israel Defense Forces gives the following figures: 2014 Merkava 580 and 1 for operational storage, 2 Merkava-780, 3 Merkava-360, and 4 production or ordered.

Granovsky also cites several other sources, in particular, the article by Rolf Hilmes for 2009, G.: it referred to 350 “Merkava-1” (1979-1983), 350 “Merkava-2” (1983-1989), 350 “ Merkava-3 ”(1990-2002, including 150 in 1990-1995 and 200 in 1995-2000), 400“ Merkava-4 ”(with 2002, ordered).

An Israeli researcher notes that for all the years of production, the Merkav’s irretrievable losses were small and amounted to approximately 20 units. An unknown number of tanks - within 7 units - were lost in the 1982 year. Several cars — no permanent losses — were hit in 90's in South Lebanon.

Most of all, the “Merkav” IDF lost in the 21 century, when this car became the main battle tank of the Israel Defense Forces. 3 were destroyed in Gaza in 2002, 5 in Lebanon, in 2006, several cars were lost for non-combat reasons.

How many tanks were released?

In 1979, the first 4 production tanks were released, and in 1980, the construction of 30 machines was already confirmed. Then the pace grew - 7-12 machines per month. As a result, the IDF received about 120 tanks per year. However, there was no information on how long this pace was maintained.

Granovsky had to refer to the data on the units armed with tanks: they knew both the number of personnel and the number of units armed with a particular tank. As a result, bringing together these and other data, the historian reached the figure from 222 to 300 machines of the first generation maximum.

Oleg Granovsky emphasizes that much less is known about the production of the Merkava-2. Counting the number of cars produced by this model had to be carried out quite roughly, according to the brigades. Moreover, the researcher notes that due to the reduction of the military budget, the production rate has seriously decreased since 1984. However, despite this, the total number of second “Merkav” turned out to be more - 369, in the case of incomplete states - 350.

Merkava-3 was produced from 1989 to 2002. They, according to Granovsky, released from 693 to 702. Granovsky's assessment of the Merkava-4 gives 460-480 machines of this type, with a continuing production rate of 30 machines per year. The historian emphasizes that the IDF first published statistics in 2018, which noted that during the 2017 year, the Israeli army received 30 new machines.

The total estimated amount produced by the Merkav for the entire time Total Israeli historian counted 1,760-1,880 machines.

Technology gave the French. Most likely, American Jewish creators of nuclear weapons shared something. In the 70s, Israel already patented its uranium enrichment technologies, such as laser. later - "magnetic".

There was a time, the USA rafted Israel its M48 and M60 tanks, BTR M113, self-propelled guns M106 and M107, etc. etc.
Then they supplied aircraft and tank engines, tank transmissions, tank guns, etc. etc.
And all the time they were loading bucks for the purchase of weapons in the United States.
And so, basically, all by themselves and by themselves. Well, maybe some other American companies helped in the development of missiles and other trifles, but supplied them with electronic components (but this is generally a complete trifle), but in general, exclusively by themselves.

A similar mechanism since the 1980s has made Israel and Egypt the largest recipients of US military assistance in the world. Meanwhile, the ratio of military assistance to Israel and Egypt goes as 5: 2, that is, Egypt receives US military assistance in the amount of 40% of what Israel receives. Not. Since the beginning of 2000x, we have been reducing tank brigades and increasing infantry. And after the start of the war in Syria, this process also accelerated. This is due to both a change in threats and a sharp increase in the anti-tank capabilities of the IDF. Today, the infantry brigade has three times as many ATGMs as it did at the end of 90x. What does all these third-generation complexes have to do with, and at the end of the 90x almost all but two separate battalions were armed with ATGM 2go watering.

first, the MLRS against the firmly rummaged infantry are effective only in the absence of counter-battery combat. In Ukraine, you really didn’t spare this good, but the effect is not the greatest.
Yes, and aviation milking tanks is a much greater threat than for numerous ATGM calculations if they took up positions and disguised themselves .. Well, if our potential adversaries change their threat structure, then our army will react to this. For now, we are reacting to what is and what will be in their next 10-15let.

So nobody wants to reduce the number of tanks.
Infantry firmly entrenched in modern war, except that in the cities will be.
Aviation in the sense of not hunting for tanks and air superiority.

"Until now, few people in our country know that one of the main reasons for Perestroika was the defeat that Israeli aviation inflicted on the Syrian air defense system in the Lebanese Bekaa Valley on June 9-10, 1982. The system was, of course, one hundred percent Soviet, and the latest at that time.
It was impossible to write off the catastrophe for the ordinary incapacity of the Arabs: even the Israelis recognized that the Syrians fought well this time, moreover, Soviet instructors were sitting next to the Syrians in the cabins of the destroyed SAMs. It's just that the enemy fought in a new way, and we - in the old way. For those who undertook to compare the German tank Leopard and the Israeli Merkava, I will reveal secret information. Transmissions and engines for both tanks are produced in Germany at the MTU factory in the city of Friedrichshafen. During the Second World War, the same factory produced engines for Wehrmacht armored vehicles. The MG-251 tank-gun tank gun Merkava Mk 3. is a clone of the 120 mm smooth-bore gun of the German company Rheinmetall installed in Leopard-2 tanks. A new MG4 253 mm caliber gun was installed on the Merkava Mk 120 tank. True, behind the brand new barrel with the “Star of David” on the hallmark hides the good old NATO classic - the Rh-120 gun. It can be seen on the most popular tanks of the Western world: Leopard 2 and Abrams M1A1. If you consider that the armor plates for the Merkava are being rolled in Romania, then in general this is a small load on the Israeli industry. There is only an assembly and design Israeli. In fact, this is a screwdriver production of tanks.

Combined armor is made even in the conditions of repair plants in Syria. This does not require steelmaking and rolling mills. I kind of hint that the production of tanks for Israel is not very energy-intensive and costly production. This is not for you the production of the same T-72, which, from the engine to the last screw, was entirely manufactured in the USSR.

Losses Merkav in the second Lebanese -5 units. 2 from land mines and 3 from rockets.

an article by Yitzhak Ben-Israel talks about the death of 23 tankers from ATGMs (and RPG grenades). Thus, 7 tankers died from landmines. However, most likely the Merkava Mk.2 (09.08.06/3/12.08.06) and the Merkava Mk.7 (5/4/2) were only hit by ATGMs. Explosive versions of landmines (in addition to ATGMs) were apparently put forward because of the detonation of ammunition in tanks. Therefore, it is most likely that not 12.07.06, but 1 tankers died from the landmines - 4 in the Merkava MK 24.07.06 (23/5/XNUMX) and XNUMX in the Merkava MK XNUMX (XNUMX/XNUMX/XNUMX) ........ .. how are you hinting that the XNUMX dead tankmen were in XNUMX units of armored vehicles?

The Kornet-E ATGM (export version) was used in combat during the Second Lebanon War by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon in 2006 [27] [32]. Several launchers and unused rockets were captured by the IDF [33]. According to the statement of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, the complexes were obtained from Syria [34].

According to the report of the Israeli army, in this conflict, 46 Merkava tanks received various injuries from enemy fire (all types of impact). The RIAN news agency, referring to the An-Nur radio station owned by Hezbollah, wrote that a certain "American report distributed in diplomatic missions in Lebanon claims that Israel’s officially reported data on losses in Lebanon are very underestimated and Israel actually lost 164 tanks" Merkava “”. [35] [36] [37] [38]

In total, during the conflict (according to the Israeli military), 45 tanks were hit by ATGMs and RPG grenades, and 51 missiles hit the tanks. In 24 cases (47% of the number of hits), the cumulative jet pierced the armor of tanks. In total, about 60 BTT units received combat damage, including 48-52 tanks. 31 soldiers of the armored forces were killed, including 30 tankers (there are sources with lower numbers, up to 13). In addition, 4 more soldiers died from ATGM hits on the BTT - 3 in the D9 bulldozers and 1 in the Puma heavy armored personnel carrier. [39] According to M. Khlyustov, "the number of launches from ATGMs of all types is unlikely to greatly exceed 100" [40]. According to O. Granovskiy, “most likely the number of ATGMs and RPG grenades fired actually exceeds 1,000 units. The statement that every 25th missile hit the target is extremely doubtful ... "[39].

Several (allegedly 2) Kornet anti-tank systems were delivered to the Israel National Institute for the Study of Ammunition of the Engineering Forces of the Israel Defense Forces. [41]

According to the Israeli authorities, on April 7, 2011, during the shelling of an Israeli school bus, Hamas militants used the Kornet ATGM, which led to a diplomatic scandal between Israel and Russia [31].

ATGM “Cornet” are used by the forces of the Free Army of Syria during the civil war in Syria [42].

In June 2014, members of the ISIS group posted a lot of photos of lined Iraqi armored vehicles on social networks, including tanks, armored personnel carriers and armored vehicles. An official source in the United States on June 13, 2014 confirmed damage to 28 Abrams MBTs, of which at least 5 were hit by ATGMs. A report published by Jane's authoritative publication, citing militants and various official structures, reported that Iraq’s armored vehicles had been subjected to many attacks using the Kornet ATGM and RPG-7. Among the armored vehicles destroyed and destroyed by the militants are BMP-1, T-55, Humvee and M113. According to Jane's report, there is a photo of at least one destroyed Abrams tank. [43] [44]

In 2014, according to the Israeli military, the Israeli army found Russian-made Kornet anti-tank missiles during the Indestructible Rock ATO in the Gaza Strip. Also during this operation, out of 15 missiles launched on Israeli tanks and intercepted by Trophy active tank defense systems, most were Kornet ATGMs or their modifications. Also, in some cases, the Trophy was able to detect the launch sites of ATGMs, which allowed the tank teams to destroy them immediately after interception. [15] [45]

On January 28, 2015, at least 3 anti-tank missiles of the Kornet complex were launched from Lebanon through an Israeli military jeep and village. As a result, 2 soldiers died [26] and 7 were injured, including civilians. [25]

In May 2019, a Citroen car was hit by a Kornet rocket from the Gaza Strip on the highway between the village of Yad Mordechai and the city of Sderot. The driver, a male (60 years old), was fatally wounded and died during his evacuation to the hospital. [46]
