Microsoft is preparing an augmented reality for US soldiers, employees are against

21
In November, 2018, Microsoft won a contract worth 479 million US dollars to supply the US Army version of the HoloLens Augmented Reality headset. The other day, CNBC has released a detailed report on a new technology that can turn the tide on training the soldier of the future.

The integrated visual enhancement system (IVAS) is the name of the new system. It is based on a Microsoft product called HoloLens. HoloLens is an augmented reality helmet. That is, the person wearing the system sees the combined picture: reality and virtual reality projected onto it.

The system was originally intended for professional users: surgeons, architects, mechanics. With it, it was possible to significantly simplify training and ensure more efficient performance of complex technical and medical operations, simplify work processes. And of course, this technology quickly interested the army.

In Austin, Texas, there is an army team Futures. It works with high-tech companies, starting with small start-ups and ending with major American firms, organizing a direct line of communication between enterprises and the military, allowing for more efficient implementation of new technologies on the battlefield.

The US armed forces and Microsoft have signed an agreement in the amount of 479 million dollars. However, this decision of the leadership provoked protests among ordinary workers who began to object to the fact that the product developed by them would be used for military purposes.

The collection of signatures for the petition was organized by the trade union Microsoft Workers 4 Good: it was created at the end of January 2019. In an open letter, the union demanded that the corporation review contracts with the military, stop developing armory technologies, and, most importantly, the formation of an ethics committee that would determine which contracts are permissible to conclude.

The main objection of the staff is that most of them were confident that they were working on a purely peaceful technology.

The company's management almost immediately came out in support of the contract. Brad Smith, the president of the corporation, emphasized that the company has long-standing ties with the military, and cooperation began more than 30 years ago. Those who are not satisfied with the situation may transfer from this project to others, or change the working group within the company.

The speeches were so significant that they forced Microsoft CEO Satyu Nadella to intervene and respond very sharply to the company's employees who disagree with the decision.

We made a principled decision not to deny technology to institutions chosen by us in democratic states in order to protect the freedom that we have. We were very transparent in our decision, and we will continue the dialogue [with the staff]

- said Nadella in an interview with CNN Business at the Mobile World Congress event.

Similar trends are observed in other corporations engaged in this field. Last year, Google employees forced the company to break the agreement with the army. The concern of the workers was caused by the Maven project, which used the company's artificial intelligence technology to analyze images of unmanned aerial vehicles.

The amount that the military is paying for their version of the Augmented Reality headset is not known for certain. One single kit for the regular consumer market costs 3500 dollars.

According to CNBC, IVAS is a modified version of HoloLens 2. Externally, the system is almost identical to a commercial headset - with the exception of the new FLIR thermal imaging camera, which is located in a prominent position above the user's forehead.

But the stuffing is of paramount importance, and CNBC reports that this prototype is pretty much like first-person shooters.

The augmented reality points can be used to display the course to the point of arrival, the position relative to each of the teammates, a grid that will turn the process of aiming the weapon at the target into a virtual game. The thermal imager will allow the headset to duplicate thermal / night vision goggles, determining the presence of the enemy through smoke, at night or behind certain types of obstacles (for example, bushes).

It is assumed that the size of the glasses will greatly decrease and they can be worn under the helmet (as long as this is impossible).

The military are going to use the system not only in battle. She is an excellent trainer for training soldiers. IVAS transmits a pulse, sees how a soldier looks or where he takes aim.

Microsoft is the most famous, but not the only company working on the system. Mark Stevens, Director of Acquisition and Operations, IVAS, told reporters that 13 companies were involved in the project.

One of these, Flir, developed a thermal sensor attached directly to the front of the modified HoloLens 2. It looks like half a silver table tennis ball. The device provides night vision and more.

There are 12 sensor contracts.

- explained Stevens, noting that another unnamed company helps to convert 2D graphics inside HoloLens into 3D images.

Microsoft is a contractor who has obtained the rights to an exclusive 24 contract for a month. During this period, other technology companies working on augmented reality technologies, such as Google, Apple or Magic Leap, will not qualify for participation in the development of new military technology.

According to preliminary data, the army purchased up to 100 thousands of IVAS. It will be available for widespread use in the 2022 year, and more extensive device deployment is planned for the 2028 year.

The thing is definitely good. Necessary.
But it’s easy to predict the evolution of this technology.
In the future, instead of glasses, implants will be embedded in the eye (most likely with a thin layer on the retina). And control comes from implants in the brain.
And, there is no doubt, implants will be developed that will not only be controlled by the brain, but will also be able to control human behavior.

Knowing the price of Flir thermal imagers alone, we can assume that the cost of all this helmet, along with software development, will be under 100.000 USD. For spitsnaz, it will; for a nigra, Joe is a little expensive.

there is one more nuance, but how the whole thing can stand against powerful EMP.
Otherwise, matars soldiers can get so used to this device that they can’t even shoot from a rifle without it, because they are used to aiming at the glasses screen through the cross.

"We have made a fundamental decision not to deny technology to the institutions we have chosen in democracies to protect the freedom we have."

Already sick of them "in the name of democracy and freedom." Each of its actions, whether it be intimidation of any states, the destruction of these states, blackmail, etc. they justify by this expression.

the West has always climbed into other countries under the pretext of a fictitious ideology.
earlier it was the pseudo-civilization of Rome, which, like, allowed to kill others, since they are not civilized like theirs.
then there was Christianity, and they baptized whole countries under their baptism, saying that not Catholic means it’s not a sin to kill, but it’s not a sin to plunder your country.
then again civilization became an excuse, now industrial, and the West declared others not civilized, technically continued to plunder an entire planet, declaring it to be its colony.
then democracy became this pretext, if you are not a democrat, then you can be killed. For what it doesn’t matter, then you can be a democrat, but if you were declared not a democrat, then you are not a democrat.
as soon as democracy is exhausted or its resources are exhausted, as was the case with Rome, Catholicism and the industrial revolution, they will come up with a new faith-movement. which will replace democracy and already under its banner will continue to rob the weaker.

It's a good idea to hack this "reality" on the battlefield and get it into a dinosaur attack. The increasing dependence on virtual realities turns an ordinary person able to cope with the difficulties of being in a neonatal waiting for clues. Thus humanity degenerates.

Do people who wear ordinary glasses also evoke similar emotions in you?
After all, they also depend in life on the virtual reality of glasses on the nose.

all this is of course good ... but the ability to use your eyes has not been canceled ... it's like a child I play in Call of duty Black ops 2. There is a sight that shows opponents on the battlefield. When I asked why it doesn’t use it, I heard: "Only noobs use this sight. Nobody has invented anything better than a regular fly." Well, or take games, augmented reality browsers. I tried to use it once in the capital. I don't use it anymore). In a fleeting battle, perhaps hand-to-hand, such glasses will only interfere.

You can’t get used to such things at a time. Pilots are in the air in
a virtual reality helmet for many hours. They are prepared for this in hundreds of hours.
on simulators. And the special forces infantry will have to go through this.
But, having mastered, they get an incredible advantage.

I will not argue. That's when there will be a detailed analysis of the use of these clever means in conflict with an equal opponent, then you can give an assessment. Fighting is dirt, rain, hunger, blood. It's not up to augmented reality.

There is augmented reality. Realizing that some of its elements may interfere, they moved the compass and the map to the upper and lower zones, so as not to interfere with the usual view.

Judging by the size of the "thermal sensor" there is a decent resolution, maybe even 720 lines.
But there is no cooling so it will be noisy.

It’s a smart thing, it’ll go into development unambiguously, but after how much time it gets knocked on to a workable unit that does not fall apart from the fact that one fighter tapped another on his helmet ...
And the protests are rare garbage. They hoot - and everything at attention is quiet, and without miscarriages, this is democracy. The FBI ordered the gang to stop encrypting messages from users so that they can read them - everything, and without any rallies for Internet freedom

    Hmm .....
Americans start full-blown info-throws, a la SDI, so that Russia burns funds in an unnecessary direction. )))
The thing is certainly promising, only for full R&D in this area you need $ 47 billion, not $ 479 million.

not . This is a refinement of commercial technology commissioned by the military.
and this story has already been discussed at technical forums more than once or twice.

Not you tell me, wearing glasses since 8 years. Recently I hit 72. There is no augmented reality, there is a correction of the lens that is not formed as it should.
Augmented reality does not appear from wearing glasses, but from a swirl, a smoker, and an inhalation. Well, from the malicious intent of the programmer who wants to cut the dough for his work.

The thermal imager in each soldier’s glasses is, of course, cool. FLIR is a highly respected company. But for every tricky nut, there may be a bolt with the corresponding thread. For lovers of dodging in the dark in a strange land, there are excellent anti-personnel and signal mines, also with sensors. So let's see.
