American ambassador and "tribute" from Germany for twelve years
Even the presence of the Chancelaract (the secret treaty of Berlin and Washington, which provides US control over Germany’s foreign and domestic policy, which every newly elected chancellor must sign before taking office) does not exempt American representatives from the need for external, demonstrative respect for German sovereignty. After all, this act, the existence of which became known thanks to the confessions of retired members of the government and high-ranking military, is secret, and requires appropriate, careful handling.
Although everyone understood that the US ambassadors in Germany always occupied a special place among diplomats, had close ties with representatives of the Chancellor and important ministries of Germany, leading German politicians responded to their invitations, everything remained within the framework of propriety and protocol.
However, the times of the “delicate” American envoys are gone, and the current representative of Washington in Germany, Richard Grenell, behaves in Berlin as the head of the colonial administration in his jurisdiction. What predictably provokes indignation and protest of the Germans. And this began to occur almost immediately after he was appointed to this post.
Barely taking office, the diplomat posted a tweet about US withdrawal from the deal with Iran, appealing to the “native merchants”: “As Donald Trump stated, US sanctions will affect key sectors of the Iranian economy. German companies operating in Iran should immediately wind down their local business. ”
The publication predictably provoked a hefty scandal and critical responses not only from the German media, but also from the country's leading politicians.
But this did not make him wise, and soon Grenell again provoked a scandal, blurting out in an interview with the far-right American resource Breitbart, that he sees his mission in strengthening the position of conservative forces in Germany and throughout Europe. After that, German politicians began to advocate the removal of a foreign representative who openly declares his intention to intervene in the internal political life of the FRG and the EU.
Sarah Wagenknecht, head of the Left German Party faction in the Bundestag, said in an interview with Die Welt:
And the famous German politician Martin Schulz, who headed the Social Democratic Party of Germany before 2018, expressed the hope that "Mr. Grenelle will not last long as the ambassador to Germany."
The hopes of Schulz have not yet come true, but an arrogant American, as Der Spiegel states,
According to the publication, in Berlin, the American representative is practically in political isolation. Even Chancellor Angela Merkel "keeps Grennell at a distance," and German deputies, if they cannot avoid meeting him, prefer to do it outside the walls of the Bundestag and try not to attract the attention of the press.
However, getting through the American envoy is not an easy task, and the new 2019 year began with another scandal involving him. The German tabloid Bild got Richard Grenelle’s letters addressed to a number of German companies involved in the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, with which the head of the US diplomatic mission is trying to “put pressure” on these organizations to “strengthen US policy”.
“Companies that support the construction of both pipelines are actively undermining the security of Ukraine and Europe,” Grenell writes in these messages and warns that German organizations “operating in the Russian energy export sector are involved in something that may entail significant sanctions risks.
The German Foreign Ministry declared a “lack of understanding” of the ambassador’s actions, and the addressees of his messages considered this to be blackmail.
Well, now Grenell, feeling like a Khan baskak from a famous cartoon, demanded “a tribute for 12 years” (the ambassador did not encroach upon Ambassador Gay Putyatichn, being an open homosexual).
The head of the diplomatic mission spoke at Die Welt with an interview in which, in addition to obedience, he demanded money from Germany.
First of all, of course, the Germans should fork out "for security," because, as Grenell stated, "Russia is on the threshold."
The ambassador said that the Americans are waiting for the fulfillment of NATO requirements by Germany, to increase defense spending to two percent of GDP. Most of these funds, as we understand, will be direct investments in the US economy, since they will go to purchase American weapons.
Of course, Grennel also demanded “diversification of energy purchases”, that is, to purchase American LNG instead of Russian gas. He also blamed the Germans for the fact that they, instead of “increasing pressure on Russia” because of the “violation” of the INF Treaty, continue to build the Nord Stream-2.
Thus, as we see, the destruction of the treaty on medium-range missiles is also a tool for the US to manipulate economic issues and is used to advance their purely commercial interests. Of course, to the detriment of the European allies.
Attention should be paid to one very important detail. To wait for the recall of Grenella from Germany, who acts there like an elephant in a china shop, there are hardly any reasons. Because all his actions as an American representative are not his unsuccessful improvisation, but the strict and strict adherence to instructions from Washington.
So, the “black marks” that he gave out to German firms, this, as Grenell himself testifies, is “a clear expression of the US position”. And this is true when you consider that on December 11 on December 2018, the US House of Representatives passed a resolution against the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. And the German edition of Handelsblatt, citing sources in the German government, said: The State Department is preparing a draft of sanctions against two European construction companies associated with SP-2.
That is, Grenella can, without exaggeration, be called the face of the new American diplomacy of the Donald Trump era, based on blackmail and threats.
In the above-mentioned interview, the ambassador announced that Washington was using “carrots and sticks” when working with opponents. With gingerbread, as we can see, the United States has been working hard today - they not only do not distribute them, but on the contrary, try to reclaim them for themselves from others.
But with the whip, the Americans, too, is not all smooth. He tried to give examples of American successes achieved through tough economic sanctions. And named as such the DPRK. However, there is no reason to talk about any American success. Recall that Washington launched a campaign of unprecedented political, military and economic pressure on Pyongyang. But his only achievement was the agreement of Kim Jong-un to a meeting with Trump, which, incidentally, he had never refused.
The meeting took place, but it turned out to be practically fruitless: Kim announced that he would discuss the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula only after receiving real security guarantees from the United States. Trump could not provide such guarantees, and the matter ended. The parties agreed to meet “someday”, and the matter ended. Trump declared this to be a great victory and is now trying to avoid an in-depth discussion of the Korean topic. It seems that he is even afraid to look in the direction of Pyongyang, who makes the most of this situation, developing and strengthening relations with Seoul, which the Americans had previously hindered with all their might.
Thus, the “threatening” example of Grenella is unlikely to make the right impression on the German audience. After all, Berlin has the potential to confront American dictates no less than that of the DPRK. It suffices to see how quickly he was able to put Paris in its place, trying to oppose SP-2.
And with such “khan Baskas” as Richard Grenell, and with such a foreign policy, which is constantly encroaching not only on the dignity of Europeans, but, even more terrible, on their wallet, sooner or later even the Chancelaract will stop working. Unless, of course, this is not fiction, and such a contract is in reality.
