Yoshihide Suga: Tokyo's position on the South Kuriles remains unchanged

The Japanese government will not change its position with regard to the peace treaty with Russia and the ownership of the "Northern Territories" (southern Kuril Islands). The position of Japan on this issue is unchanged, said Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers Yoshihide Suga, commenting on the talks held yesterday in Moscow between the foreign ministers of Japan and Russia, reports TASS.
At a press conference held in Tokyo after the talks, Suga, in response to a question from journalists about the ownership of the South Kuriles, said that the position of official Tokyo has not changed and remains unchanged. He explained that at the talks in Moscow, the parties had specified their views on the solution of the peace treaty issue and exchanged views, while agreeing not to disclose the content of the talks.
Meanwhile, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergey Lavrov, on Monday, summing up the bilateral talks, said that the views on the resolution of the issue of a peace treaty between the countries are absolutely opposite. According to him, the main condition for the conclusion of a peace treaty between the countries of Russia is the recognition by Japan of the full sovereignty of Russia over the Kuril Islands and this is the "basic position" of Russia, which is "not negotiable."
At the same time, it is reported that the parties agreed to continue further negotiations based on the 1956 declaration of the year.
