Hungary reminded the world of its military disgrace
A peasant from the village of Koltunovka, Belgorod Region, stands near the cross established by the Hungarians. The inscription in two languages reads: “Russian !!! Here was the Hungarian army, which returned you a cross, freedom and land! ”Only a few kilometers remained to Ostrogozhsk and Rossosh. Source of photo and captions: warspot.ru
Why didn't the Magyars be taken prisoner
This is not the first appeal of the Hungarian authorities to stories those old events. In the winter of 1943, in the bend of the Don, the Hungarian army lost 120 thousands of fighters - about half of its armed forces. That was the largest military defeat in the history of Hungary. In fact, every second Hungarian family mourned the death of their loved ones.
In socialist Hungary, this episode of the country's history was not taken to be remembered, much less discussed publicly. And that's why. The Hungarian army on the Eastern Front, in terms of savagery and mockery of the civilian population and prisoners, overtook even its fascist thugs from Germany, allied with Hungary.
For ethical reasons, Soviet historians have avoided the publication of detailed eyewitness accounts of the war crimes of the Hungarian Nazis. However, the overall picture still passed. Here is how she looked in summary. Magyars especially committed atrocities near Voronezh. Prisoners of Soviet soldiers and even civilians were pierced with their eyes, roasted on fires, burned alive along with their dwellings, sawed people with saws, cut out stars in their hands, buried them into the ground with half-dead, raped women and children.
They say that, having learned about these atrocities, the commander of the Voronezh Front, General Vatutin, issued a tacit order: “Do not take Madiyar in captivity!”. And, it seems, they listened to their commander. Hence such catastrophic losses in the 2 of the Hungarian army, which the troops of the Voronezh Front literally dared out of their way. In two weeks of fighting, the 200-thousand army of Magyars ceased to exist as a combat unit.
The current post of the Hungarian government directly echoes the message of the Hungarian Prime Minister during World War II Miklos Kallai, which he gave to the 2 Army soldiers who went to the front: “Our land should be protected where it is best to defeat the enemy. By pursuing it, you will secure the lives of your parents, your children, and secure the future of your brethren. ”
Now in Budapest they also say that on the Don the Magyars fought for Hungary. Such a transformation in the minds of local politicians did not occur immediately. In the post-socialist time, a curtain of silence gradually fell over this shameful page of Hungarian military history. There were articles, books, documentaries, justifying the participation of Hungarian soldiers on the side of the Nazi German troops.
The argument was taken from the time of Prime Minister Kallai. Like, the Germans helped the Magyars recover from defeat in the First World War. Then, as you know, Hungary lost 70 percent of its territory, 3 a million Hungarians were beyond the new borders. Before the war, Hitler returned part of the lands of Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Transcarpathia to the Hungarian dictator Miklos Horthy. In gratitude, Budapest joined the fascist axis Berlin-Rome and, together with Germany and Italy, went to war against the Soviet Union.
In this geopolitical construction there is no main thing - the war crimes of Hungarian soldiers. After all, no one forced them to the atrocities that they repaired in Voronezh land. Only an unconscious or highly inflamed brain can compare these actions with heroism.
Black memory of the 2 Army
However, compare. Six years ago, in the winter of 2013, on the occasion of the 70 anniversary of the Ostrogozhsko-Rossoshanskaya operation on the Don in Budapest, they held a special scientific conference. Somehow it turned out that surprising concord was seized by the speakers.
Here the expert of the Ministry of Defense Peter Illusfalvi spoke. He said without further doubt that “at the present time a lot of false information is still circulating around these events. It is important to see that the emergence of the 2 Army on the Soviet front was inevitable in that historical-political situation. ”
Illusfalvi did not specify what he means by false information. It seems that these are historical testimonies of Soviet people about the atrocities of the Magyars near Voronezh. The topic of war crimes was also avoided by Pal Fodor, Director General of the Research Center of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
“The time has come for a realistic assessment of military events in the bend of the Don,” Academician Fodor assured the participants of the anniversary conference. “The conditions of the Trianon Treaty (concluded at the end of the First World War. - Note) could only be corrected with the help of Germany and Italy, so the Hungarian political leadership could not afford not to participate in the fight against the Soviet Union on the German side.”
With the filing of these and similar to them "specialists" in Budapest, the opinion began to be cultivated that "Hungarian soldiers fought on distant Russian fields and found a heroic death for their country." This is a quote from the speech of the Secretary of the Ministry of Defense of Hungary Tamas Varga at an event dedicated to the 71 anniversary of the Don disaster of the 2 of the Hungarian army in 2014 year.
Since then, the theme of the Don disaster began to sound every January. In addition to the commemorative events in the country, exhibitions are held where you can get acquainted with weapons, uniforms, household items of Hungarian soldiers of the Second World War, documents and photographs. "Don Heroes" open memorials.
Instead of recognizing shame and expressions of contempt, toasts are now heard praising the “heroism” of the fanatics who left a black memory of themselves in Voronezh land. Saturday application on the page of the Hungarian government on Facebook exactly from the same series.
Not everyone in Hungary “understood him correctly”. “The war against the USSR was a punishment for us all. And now, after 75 years, the West begins again dangerous games with Russia, and these lunatics have not learned anything, and have forgotten the suffering, ”the Rambler portal quotes the commentary left by Gabor Zornnett, a Budapest resident.
Only it is unlikely that Zornette will be heard in the offices of the Hungarian government. In recent years, here (as well as in Poland, the Baltic States, Ukraine, other European countries), the heirs of those who were defeated in World War II came to power. Today they are trying to take revenge for the past defeat, to whitewash the war crimes of their ancestors. Make them the heroes of the nation.
In this regard, I recall an episode from the life of the remarkable Russian writer-veteran Viktor Petrovich Astafyev. In the turbulent years of perestroika, he wrote the novel "Cursed and Killed", where he frankly showed the blood, dirt, fear and horror of war experienced by young Soviet soldiers.
At that time, Astafyev was misunderstood and condemned by other front-line writers, no less deserved and respected people. They insisted: the youth should be brought up with heroic examples, and not poured them with wounds. Viktor Petrovich then replied that the primitive glorification of the past war opens the way to a future war. Wise was a man.
We note for ourselves that the veteran front-winners argued among themselves. In Budapest, however, the army was glorified, which even the prisoners were disgusted to take. It is easy to imagine what such a short-sighted policy opens the way ...
