Modernization of BMP-1 - JSM "Cleaver"

The module has rocket and cannon armament and is intended for placement on mobile, stationary and surface carriers. Today, modernization of the armament complex of various combat platforms is the least expensive and fastest way to update and improve the fire characteristics of existing vehicles, surface ships and stationary objects. Various latest modifications and modernizations of armament complexes are especially in demand to extend the service life of combat equipment as a modern armed platform.

Modernization of BMP-1 - JSM "Cleaver"

The Kliver BM as a modern weapon system was specially developed in the 90s of the last century for the rapid modernization of the BMP series vehicles, increasing the service life of the vehicles due to a sharp increase in fire potential, power and capabilities of the onboard weapon system. The total number of serial vehicles is currently about 20 thousand BMP-1 vehicles, half of which were exported at one time. Moreover, many of them are still in service in more than 40 countries around the world. Only in Russia there are about 9000 of them. The last BMP-1 left the factory in 1981.

Standard armament and control equipment make it possible to hit ground targets at a distance of up to 1.3 kilometers in daylight and up to 0.5 kilometers in the dark with gunfire and hit targets up to 3 kilometers with ATGM. The ammunition used has already become insufficiently powerful to hit modern targets, and the lack of modern equipment makes firing from the BMP-1 weapons ineffective. However, the large potential for modernization and the "Soviet" quality of the BMP-1 chassis make these vehicles an excellent base for modernization.

Therefore, work was started on a modular weapons system to increase the combat potential of the vehicle. The Kliver MBT, which houses missile and cannon weapons, is complemented by a modern automated fire control system. In addition to the BMP-1, the module is ideal for upgrading many lightly armored combat vehicles, upgrading/modifying small combat surface ships, and installing them on stationary platforms.

The first public appearance of the JSM “Cleaver” is the 1996 year, on the 850 anniversary of the city of Tula. It was installed on the working model of the BTR-80 vehicle. Due to the fact that the module is designed to be placed on the BPM-1, a shoulder strap from the BMP-80 is welded on to the BRT-1, where Clever was installed. The full name of the module is TKB-799 “Cleaver”. In 1998, he is being tested at BMP-1 in Kubinka. A year later, two BMP-1 vehicles with the “Kliver” modules installed were presented at the IDEX'99 international exhibition in the UAE.

WMO Cleaver:
- A turret with mounted 4 anti-tank guns, an 30 mm gun, a machine gun and a set of sighting devices;
- ammunition supply system;
- ammunition in a turret deprivation;
- a place for placing the gunner-operator.

The module has a single execution and consists of:
- 30 mm automatic guns "2А72", which are regularly installed on the BMP-3;
- anti-tank missile complex with laser-guided "Cornet";
- machine gun caliber 7.62 mm type PKTM.

Module ammunition consists of:
- 4-x missiles for the Kornet anti-tank systems;
- 300 ammunition for 30 mm guns 2А72;
- 200 ammunition for machine gun.

Due to the low landing of the tower on the machine body, it receives additional security when opposing the enemy. Missile launchers with guided missiles mounted on a single axis with a machine gun-gun unit. The tower itself is designed as a welded structure: of armor plates with different installation angles. Sights - a thermal imager and a laser pointing device "1K13-2". The head part of the sight is made to the left of the tower, slightly behind there is a hatch loading ammunition. The anti-tank missile launchers are mounted on guides to the right of the gun. Vertical guidance is the same for the entire weapon system. The barrel of the gun has a special frame to improve the rigidity of the gun and increase the accuracy of fire.

The module allows firing at the enemy at any time of the day with the entire weapon system, both from a stationary position and while moving on land and water. Targets are lightly armored ground and surface objects, low-flying aircraft and enemy manpower. The installed equipment ensures rapid detection and recognition of enemy objects in daylight and darkness, determining the distance to the target, calculating the necessary parameters for firing, directing the weapon system to the target and monitoring the operability of the fire control system. In terms of its fire characteristics, the Kliver OBM has superiority over the American M2 Bradley module and the BMP-2 weapon system.

    The module is interesting, but the "legs" remain rather weak anyway!

      Argue about the legs. Who does not curalize on a beshka says so. Yes, the landing is hung in the compartment. But the beshka itself is spinning like a yule and did not notice that anyone complained.

        Discuss module or legs? Judging by the weight of 1300kg. for BMP, this is nonsense.

    The module will increase the combat potential of the BMP 1, but why they didn’t put additional armor on the BMP itself, in any case it is cheaper than buying a 3,4 BMP. Although a good solution.

    An uninhabited combat module, a good thing, but the ATGM pipes were placed directly under fire ... "Here the bullet flew and yeah ..."

      pay attention to the gunner’s chair, perhaps his head does not rise above the roof of the BMP body, but the gunner is located in the combat module

      Sehiru San on the website of the manufacturer of this module there is a picture where ATGMs are covered with armor. I think installing armor on the module is not such a problem.

    The module occupies the internal volume of the infantry fighting vehicle and has ammunition inferior to the Ukrainian counterpart (with the exception of ptura). This thing has been carried around for many years at exhibitions, apparently in this form no one needs it.

    I agree, but you need to put on the base of T-55

      Great idea! A heavy infantry fighting vehicle is a serious thing, both armor and firepower are good, and there is a lot of space for an airborne assault force (if this is an option for an infantry fighting vehicle, not an infantry fighting vehicle), and cheap, but you can’t take it with planes.

      Insurgent, why don't you fix it? A long time ago, a DZ was developed for our light armored vehicles and additional armor modules.

    Does he enter service? Ukraine is making great strides in the modernization of the BMP-1 with its uninhabited combat modules. How are they compared to Ukrainians

    Here is more information on BMP modernized in Ukraine
    , BMP-1M (the modernized BMP-1) is the installation of a new 3DT2 engine with a capacity of 400 hp, a Shkval combat module and an air conditioner. “This modernization in its characteristics is not inferior to previous analogues, but at the same time it is improved in terms of its dynamic characteristics and firepower,” he said. The new fact is that the crew is inside the car despite the fact that the combat module is brought out. “That is, we made the crew as safe as possible, and the gunner can fire regardless of where the car is. Thus, if before the crew commander and gunner were in the tower, which was more dangerous, now they are lower, ”-. In addition, the machine is additionally equipped with a 30-mm KBA117 grenade launcher, two Barrier rockets, a 30-mm cannon and a KT762 machine gun coaxial with it. A tandem sighting system has also been installed, which allows observation, aiming and fire.

    I was recently in Sertovalo, near St. Petersburg, I saw a lot of BMP-1s with the 73-mm "Thunder" cannon, which were intensively used during exercises

    The idea of replacing the standard BMP-1 turret with the Cleaver combat module (or some other) is more than justified, and needs to be implemented as soon as possible ...

    As I understand it, the combat module is made to concentrate weapons in one place on the combat vehicle and it’s moving the crew farther away from the ammunition Yes
    For these future Yes

    It would not hurt to cover the ATGMs with armor plates from above and from the side.

    It is a pity that the Cleaver combat module was not installed on the Basurmanin BMP-1AM. It is in many ways superior to the combat module BPPU MB1.
