Israel plans to create a combat laser as an addition to the Iron Dome
47
The Israeli Defense Ministry intends to develop combat laser systems capable of protecting objects from mortar mines and unguided rockets. The project of this installation will cost Israel an amount of at least 800 thousand dollars. This is reported on the site N + 1 with reference to Breaking Defense.
The Israeli Defense Ministry believes that the installation of laser anti-missile systems can be an effective addition to the capabilities of the “Iron Dome” batteries.
In addition, this will significantly reduce government spending on repelling missile strikes and the time period for responding to them. A statement by the Israeli military about the development of an anti-missile laser was made after Israeli territory was heavily bombarded by Hamas. During the attack, the Israeli Iron Dome was unable to intercept all the ammunition fired.
However, it is not yet reported when the development of a new complex will begin. Meanwhile, it has been suggested that the first anti-missile laser may appear in a year.
It should be noted that this is not the first order of the development of an anti-missile laser by the Israel Defense Ministry. From the middle of the 1990-s to the first half of the 2000-s in the country, the development of a combat system with a Nautilus THEL chemical laser was carried out with the participation of several US companies. During the tests, the laser complex successfully shot down 28 shells fired by MLRS. However, in 2006, the Israeli military decided to close this project because it was dangerous for the environment because of the chemicals used as part of this complex as an energy source.
After that, the Israeli military began to actively develop a layered missile defense system using various types of antimissile systems.
