In the USA, they tested the VSS Unity spacecraft and wanted to lower the "border of space"

The American company Virgin Galactic has successfully tested the VSS Unity, which belongs to the so-called spaceplanes. During the tests - after undocking the spaceplane from the carrier - its own engines were involved, which allowed the VSS Unity to reach speeds of about 2,9 M (2,9 times the speed of sound) and rise to an altitude of 82,7 km. This is the first time that the altitude mark in 80 km has been overcome by the spaceplane.

In the USA, they tested the VSS Unity spacecraft and wanted to lower the "border of space"

During the tests on board the spaceplane was NASA research equipment.

It is noteworthy that, according to the International aviation federation standards, an altitude of 82-83 km is not appropriate to outer space. In this regard, the very concept of "spaceplane" in this case does not correspond to reality. And instead of raising the spacecraft to real space heights (from 100 km), the United States decided to push the initiative to reduce the "height of the beginning of outer space" from 100 to 80 km. It is stated that it is necessary to reduce the space boundary in order to study the nature of the work of spacecraft in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere.

During the flight, VSS Unity, using equipment loaded on its board, conducted research on the separation of liquid and gas under conditions of weak gravity, as well as other experiments, including studying the operation of a structure that protects goods from vibration when spacecraft enter space.

It should be recalled that VSS Unity is already the second such brainchild of the aforementioned American company. The previous version of the spaceplane (VSS Enterprise) crashed in 2014 during a failed test.

          No one suggests this, more research is needed to determine whether the edge of the earth is steep or gently sloping. And by the way, the fact that the earth is flat just proves unequivocally that the Americans were not on the moon! Astronomy is pseudoscience! That is why it was canceled for study in schools.

        The fact that they decided to move the border is a trifle that does not deserve attention. You can make jokes about this as much as you like. But the fact that there is an apparatus capable of not only climbing 80 km, but suitable for performing real tasks is already serious. Let me remind you that the striped ones also have a Boeing X-37, a reusable unmanned shuttle that has flown 2010 flights since 5 and has flown more than 9 months in total. In the department of Mr. Rogozin, there is nothing of the kind, but there are only Napoleonic plans, none of which is really being implemented - except "saw, Mitya, saw."

          The principle of "space" flights of such spaceplanes is a ballistic jump upward on a rocket engine - an enlarged "slide" of a conventional aircraft in which weightlessness is simulated. Then the "stone" thrown upwards returns. Well, okay, VERY heavily scaled. And everything would be fine, but "satellites" at an altitude of 100 km "live" VERY little, just the influence of the atmosphere at such an altitude does not allow placing long-term objects. That is, for the exploration of precisely space, there is not enough real smallness - the energy intensity of such devices for the transition to higher orbits. For flights above and beyond the radiation belt of the Earth, they are not intended even more so.
          Let me remind you that the absolute record for manned vehicles of this type and with an air launch at the American X-15, 1963, was piloted by Joseph Walker. But the principle of achieving suborbital altitude is the same - ballistic on a rocket engine. Important: it’s not at all aerodynamic to refute Karman’s calculations! The X-37B is capable of flying in orbits of 200-700 km, but it is unmanned and with a rocket launch, the rest have not yet broken a record of 55 years ago (technology has leaped too far forward))).

      1. There were no statements, the author went too far (incites hatred of the Americans, apparently no more than that)
      2. There is research, calculations, evidence (in the same way as we lay claim to the shelf in the Arctic, proving that Amerikans want to lower the Karman line)
      e.g. Jonathan C. McDowella article from Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, 60 Garden St, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA dated 20.07.2018
      There is evidence in the article.
      Well, as an example:

      The geodetic altitude of apogee and perigee depending on the decay time of the selected satellites in elliptical orbit. Horizontal lines at a distance of 80 and 100 km are superimposed on sections of perigee. These satellites made several passages of perigee below 100 km.
      (a) Satellite 748 (1964-006B, Electron 2, 2D No. 2);
      (B) Satellite 12512 (1981-30A, Lightning-3 No. 30);
      c) satellite 14587 (1983-126A, Cosmos-1518, Eye 6022);
      (d) Sputnik22189 (1992-069A, Kosmos-2217, Oko 6059); e) satellite 29399 (third-stage rocket Chang Zheng 3A Y10, 2006-038B);
      (f) Satellite 38255 (2012-019B, Centaur AV-031 rocket).
      the Soviet satellite Electron-4 (SSN748), which apparently made 10 revolutions with a perigee of 85 km or less during its return in 1997, or the American Centaur AV-031 (SSN 38255) rocket, having a Perigee geodetic height below 110 km and 4 days before returning, it descended 80 and 95 km during most of this time in its orbit

      The curves for z (-0,3), z (0,0), z (0,7) corresponding to the effective Karman line for B = 0,005, 0,01, 0,05 m ^ 2 / kg, respectively. Each chart gives calculations for different latitudes; in middle latitudes, atmospheric fluctuations are less. At these low altitudes, the effects of the solar cycle are minimal.

      Aunts Carla from Chicago, or officials?

      There will be, but later, Pompeo or Trump. It is necessary to create public opinion, back up with numbers, it is necessary that they support in Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and England. And then an application to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in Vienna.

      * In 2004, FAI General Secretary Max Bishop admitted that the choice of the Pocket Line in 1950 was “completely arbitrary” (Because 62 miles is about 100 kilometers, and 100 is a good round number.)
      * "Outer Space Restriction Agreement Does Not Exist”Said Hans Haubold, senior program officer for Office for Outer Space Affairs (UN). Howbold added that the distinction between space and atmosphere is too blurry to ever establish a physics-based definition.
      * US Air Force presents "astronaut wings" to Air Force officers who have ascended 50 miles (or about 80 kilometers) above sea level.

      Why is the USA necessary?
      1. At the moment, only the United States possesses (and previously possessed the X-15) technology of flights at such altitudes.
      2. All modern air defense systems (and we have most of them) have a ceiling of 40 km, and missile defense systems up to 30-40 km, or more than 100 km, and even few of them
      Kinetic warhead does not allow confidently intercept targets below 70-100 km
      RP (compression) or nuclear warhead not effective over 50 km (no atmosphere)
      3. Not a single interceptor that has even promising V-V missiles (or rather air-"space"), even the MiG-41, which does not exist, will be able to intercept a target above 50-70 km.
      4. The USA will again be able to fly with impunity (like U-2, SR-71) over the territory of the countries of opponents: this is reconnaissance + serious strategic opportunities

          No, 100 km is based on research by an American scientist
          "The altitude was named after the American scientist Theodor von Karman. He was the first to determine that at about this altitude the atmosphere becomes so rarefied that aerodynamic aviation becomes impossible, since the speed of the aircraft required to create sufficient lift becomes greater than the first space velocity , and therefore to achieve greater heights, it is necessary to use the means of astronautics. "

        The ability to use the properties of the atmosphere for flight is determined by the density necessary for this. Which in turn varies depending on the distance to the Earth in accordance with certain laws of physics.
        At an altitude of 80, you can fly using wings, at an altitude of 100 it is no longer possible.

          When the ISS is in the shadow of the Earth, the solar panels are switched to the Night Glider mode (Eng.), While they rotate the edge in the direction of motion to reduce the resistance of the atmosphere, which is present at the flight altitude of the station

          Well, the Air Force thought back, they calculated the altitude at which it is impossible to fly in orbit, this altitude turned out to be 80,45 km.

    It is in vain that those who have fun over the US initiative to move outer space boundaries are so fun. And how do you turn out on this ground that objects flying above 80 km are spacecraft that can circle over the entire surface of the earth regardless of state borders. And now the United States has become the only owner of an apparatus in the world that can act in this way. Further, the rather controversial status of non-militarization of outer space will remain to be washed away. Having said that it is impossible to place military facilities in stationary orbits in it, and now the United States has become the owner of an apparatus that can cross borders and carry weapons without moving in stationary orbits.

      Nobody knows, so they decided once 100 km. Not feet, not elbows or miles, namely kilometers. But when you watch Felix Baumgartner from 39 km. I jumped with a parachute, so it was as if I were doing it from space ...

        Well, how no one knows?
        They wrote to you above:
        "The altitude was named after the American scientist Theodor von Karman. He was the first to determine that at about this altitude the atmosphere becomes so rarefied that aerodynamic aviation becomes impossible, since the speed of the aircraft required to create sufficient lift becomes greater than the first space velocity , and therefore to achieve greater heights, it is necessary to use the means of astronautics. "

        But this, of course, is not known to the fierce lovers of the USA - the stronghold of Pravda and Democracy.

    Again with suckers they will collect money on the exchange, and in 5-10 years this project will be quietly closed.

    Why trifle? Lower the border to 10 km, and take all the airline extra headstock for rolling passengers in space laughing

    his own engines were used, which allowed the VSS Unity to develop a speed of about 2,9 M (2,9 times higher than the speed of sound) and rise to a height of 82,7 km.
    This is the first time that a space elevation of 80 km has been overcome by a spaceplane.

    With this formulation, the Shuttle falls under the concept of a spaceplane.
    And how this device overcame this height: "jumped" or "flew". If "flew", then the speed is too small ...

    The US decided to push the initiative to reduce the "height of the beginning of outer space" from 100 to 80 km

    It is not enough mattresses that they twist the laws for themselves on the ground - now they decided to deal with space legislation. One word is exceptional. negative

    It happened before. In the 50s of the last century, their Air Force and the National Aviation Federation (?) Set records based on the position that the border of space is an altitude of 50 miles or 80 km. According to the international classification, the International Aviation Federation (FAI) set a record and, accordingly, the boundaries of space based on an altitude of 100 km (Karmana Line). The Americans then brought their legislation in line with the recommendation of the international Federation. Now they want to re-establish borders of 80 km based on advertising goals. It is one thing if you spend XXX thousand dollars and get a certificate that you really have traveled to space, another thing when this happens not every time. Can drag a company through the courts

    Well, well, they got up twice. Is this something fundamentally changing?

    These two times count already suborbital space flight. So it was already in 60 years, when the Americans tested their rocket aircraft X-15. EMNIP, two of the testers were recognized as astronauts who made a suborbital space flight, because climbed to heights of 103 and 106 km, respectively

    The practical value of such a height is doubtful. A Powers example on U-2 showed that flight altitude is not a panacea for air defense systems.

    This is not about air defense, but about which flight is considered space and in reality we do not have any experimental vehicles that would reach at least such heights. Although EMNIP in the 90s, the question of creating such a space plan for flights of tourists was considered and we

    Well, you just made a world discovery, and fully correspond to your nickname. But you can’t name the parameters of the shuttle’s orbit, you’re our expert ...

    I look and yearn for the 50-60 years.

    Not worth it, Eugene! Each time has its pros and cons. These years (50-60) were years of euphoria in space exploration, dreamed that in the 70s we would fly to Mars, and in the late 90s we would already be on Pluto. Look at least the Tech-Youth magazines from the late 50s to the early 60s. In the sky, ionic and nuclear planes, drop-shaped machines on the earth, Houses - needles, domes or pyramids. Dreamed that at the end of the century this will happen? Alas. But there is no disappointment. Another area, as electronics began to evolve without even leaps and bounds. For almost a quarter century, computers have become part of the furnishings of an apartment. Without a cell phone, you can’t imagine life. Do not miss, comrade

      They did not bring. The Air Force believed 80,45 and they think so.
      Who exactly wants to change the border is not known, in other articles I did not find anything about it

    Another multimillionaire entered the space business.
    If Branson starts regular tourist flights into orbit, he will return investments in R&D.
    And it will be able to crash into the launches of commercial satellites into low orbits, displacing the Mask.

      It’s still up to orbit and step. And how many people who want to pay a couple of hundred million dollars for an hour and a half flight?

        What are millions? The first few dozen will fly for 250 thousand dollars.
        Gradually, he promises to lower to 40 thousand.
        250 thousand can afford many hundreds of thousands of rich people. This is the price of a luxury car.
