German media publish information about a political decision that German Chancellor Angela Merkel made today. Speaking at the congress of the Christian Democratic Union party in Hamburg, Merkel said she was leaving the post of party leader who had been engaged for more than 18 years.
Merkel:
I came to the head of the CDU in 2000, against the backdrop of a corruption scandal that broke out in party circles. Over the years, our party has become better; I hope that our party will have an even brighter future. Today I leave the highest party post. I always remembered that sooner or later it would have to be done.
Angela Merkel noted that in the party today one of the most pressing issues is the attitude towards the liberal policy of receiving migrants. According to the Chancellor, she believed, believes and will continue to believe that in no case should there be a barrier in front of the refugees, since this is contrary to the rules of a free Europe. At the same time, Merkel, as she herself stated, understands those who oppose her, including her party colleagues.
Who will lead the CDU now? According to some reports, we are talking about two main candidates. The first is Friedrich Mertz, who previously headed the CDU / CSU faction in the Bundestag. The second is Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer - the general secretary of the CDU.
Earlier it became known that in the chair of the Chancellor Merkel is going to work up to 2021 year.
Merkel left the rostrum after the announcement of the resignation of the head of the party to "stormy and unceasing applause." Journalists have already counted that the ovation lasted more than 10 minutes.
