Armored Demining Machine BMR-3MA "Vepr". Breakthrough for engineering troops

At the end of November, the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Russia announced the next delivery of armored vehicles to ground forces. This time, the manufacturer handed over to the engineering forces six new armored vehicles for demining the BMR-3MA Vepr. The delivery of such serial production equipment started last year, and some parts of the engineering troops have already managed to master it. Machines of new lots, in turn, should increase the total number of such equipment and have the required effect on the potential of the troops.

The newest armored demining vehicle BMR-3MA, also known as "Vepr", is a variant of the further development of this class of equipment. A curious feature of this project is the use of approaches that previously found application in the creation of other special machines. All demining machines of the BMR-3 family are based on tank chassis, and as this line evolved, different base designs were used. In addition, the refinement and improvement of special equipment was carried out.

Recall the base BMR-3 was built on the chassis of the main tank T-72А. Subsequently, at its base was developed engineering machine BMR-3M. Its main difference was the use of the chassis of the T-90 tank. The latest project of the BIS-3MA involves the construction of a demining machine based on the T-90A tank, which leads to the replacement of the power plant and some other systems. In addition, during the development of the latest version of the Boar, some ideas and solutions were introduced aimed at improving the basic characteristics of the machine - including fundamentally new ones.

The development of the project BIS-3MA / "Object 197А" started a few years ago and was carried out by the Scientific and Production Corporation Uralvagonzavod. The basis of the new machine is the groundwork and components of the BMR-3М and T-90А projects. The widespread use of ready-made components and assemblies has accelerated the process of development and testing. At the same time, it was not without significant innovations. To date, the latest version of "Boar" has coped with all the trials and went into a series. The first cars of this type entered service last year.

The mission of the BIS-3MA is the exploration of minefields and the subsequent organization of passages for vehicles or people. Due to the use of trawls and other devices, the Vepr can make rugged or continuous passes, clearing the terrain from mines of various types and for various purposes. This ensures a high level of protection of the crew and units, allowing the machine to work at the front edge under the enemy fire. As well as in other late domestic projects of demining machines, the means to ensure comfortable work of the crew for a long time are proposed.

The BMR-3MA is built on the basis of the chassis of the main battle tank T-90А, but it differs markedly from it. Thus, in the new project, the existing armored corps is used, seriously modified to meet the new requirements. The tower is removed from the body, instead of which the armored wheelhouse is mounted. There is also some rearrangement of internal volumes: the habitable compartment is placed on the site of the former combat compartment and is removed from the front end of the hull. Also provides for increased protection, primarily mine.

The frontal combined armor of a tank corps is enhanced by overlay units of dynamic protection. The same "boxes" are installed on the superstructure forehead and on-board screens. Due to this, the level of protection of the Wild Boar against various anti-tank weapons is increased. The central habitable compartment receives a kind of armor capsule. Its floor and sides are formed by separate armor plates installed inside the main body on the struts. The space between the outer and inner armor is given under a special filler. It is argued that such protection ensures the safety of the crew when undermining up to 7,5 kg of TNT under the hull bottom.

From the base chassis of the T-90A tank, the demining machine receives a power plant. In the aft compartment is a B-92CXNNX diesel engine with 2 horsepower. The transmission is based on planetary gearboxes. The undercarriage does not undergo any changes. Used on six road wheels with torsion bar suspension on each side. At the same time, it is envisaged to replace the torsion cover boxes inside the case. This increases the rigidity of the structure, and also contributes to the overall level of security.

Own crew "Boar" consists of two people - the driver and the commander. They are located inside the wheelhouse and have all the necessary control panels. During trawling, the observation of the road is carried out with the help of the driver’s frontal viewing device and the commander’s periscopes. Also in the habitable compartment there are places for three sappers. If necessary, the sapper assault force can dismount and independently engage in the disposal of detected explosive devices. A tank intercom is provided on board; for external communication there is a radio station P-123M.

The BMR-3MA project provides for the means that the crew and the landing force can work for 2-3 days without the need to get out of the car. On board there is a supply of food and water for 5 days, and means are installed for heating food and boiling water. The crew has individual sanitary and hygiene kits and a compact toilet. Inhabited compartment has a filtering unit and air conditioning.

"Vepr" has a set of various means offered for self-defense. The installation with a large-caliber machine gun NSVT or “Kord” is located on the roof of the cabin. On the sides of the habitable compartment are installed two blocks with smoke grenade launchers "Cloud" for firing into the front hemisphere. Also in the packs are transported automatic machine AKS-74U with ammunition, hand grenades and even a pair of portable anti-aircraft missile systems.

To solve its main tasks, an armored demining machine BMR-3MA is designed for a wide range of various equipment, both built-in and mounted. On board the machine is set its own broadband jamming station, designed to suppress the radio channels controlling explosive devices. Sapper landings when working outside the car are encouraged to use a similar device in a portable version.

In the front of the hull there are fastenings for mounting the mounted trawls of various types. According to the Ministry of Defense, serial BMR-3MA are completed with continuous-type TMT-S engineering tank trawls. It is also possible to use KMT-7 products that differ in their design and capabilities. Trawls can be equipped with electromagnetic attachments, expanding the range of tasks.

Trawl TMT-S was developed by the Chelyabinsk enterprise "Stankomash". The main element of this product is a frame of complex shape, hung on the front mount carrier. Under the frame is a lever system with two rows of massive rollers. The front row includes eight rollers, rear - six. Antenna devices of electromagnetic prefix EMT are mounted in front of the frame. The trawl weighs 13 t and can be used with different types of armored vehicles.

The TMT-S product is capable of making a continuous passage with a width of 3,9 m in obstacles organized using pressure action mines. The probability of neutralization of the explosive device reaches 95%. The electromagnetic prefix provokes the explosion of magnetic mines in the 4 band width. The existing trailing mines trawling device acts on dangerous objects in the 100 radius. When the vehicle is being dragged, the vehicle can reach speeds of up to 15 km / h.

It is also possible to use the track-type roller trawl KMT-7. This device consists of two blocks in the form of frame sections with its own rollers. Skating rinks are responsible for undermining anti-tracked mines. To combat the explosive devices that hit the bottom of the armored vehicles, the trawl is equipped with a slack frame or chain. If necessary, it is possible to equip the KMT-7 trawl with knife devices from the KMT-8 product. The latter, in this case, duplicate the rollers and increase the likelihood of successful mine clearance. The total mass of the KMT-7 trawl reaches 7,5. Trawling speed - up to 10-12 km / h.

On the frontal part of the armored vehicle BMR-3MA there are fasteners for installation of compatible trawls. At the stern there is a platform for storing and transporting trawl spare parts. The platform's carrying capacity is 5 t. There is also a crane with manual drives with a carrying capacity of 2,5 t. With its help, it is proposed to carry out field repair of trawls with the restoration of their working capacity, as well as other operations.

In size, the BMR-3MA is almost the same as previous demining machines and base tanks. The length of the vehicle without a trawl does not exceed 7 m with a width of less than 3,8 m and a height of 2,93 m. The combat weight with a trawl of a particular design is up to 50-51 t. According to the driving characteristics, the engineering vehicle hardly differs from standardized tanks.

On the basis of the BMR-3MA armored clearance vehicle, a promising similar-purpose robotic complex was developed. In the project "Breakthrough-1" it is proposed to equip an engineering machine with a set of automated and remote control tools. The control system uses a noise-free radio channel and ensures the operation of equipment in difficult conditions.

When used as part of a robotic complex, an engineering machine can be used either in the original configuration or in an unmanned configuration. In the latter case, the crew and sappers can leave their car and take shelter. Depending on the characteristics of the current situation and the tasks set, work in two modes is possible. The operator can control the “Breakthrough-1” using the remote control panel. It is also possible to create an action program, after which the demining machine should independently move along a given route and organize passes in a minefield.

The advantages of the Breakthrough-1 robotic complex are obvious. The base BMR-3MA is distinguished by a high level of crew protection provided by enhanced tank armor. Breakthrough 1, in turn, removes people from the battlefield and completely eliminates the risks to them. At the same time, regardless of the method of work, a complete solution of the tasks is provided. The only significant difference between the base "Boar" and "Breakthrough-1" is the presence of an engineer landing on a manned vehicle.

The breakthrough 1 robotic complex was first shown in 2016 year, and over time the project has managed to move forward. Not so long ago it was reported that this development has successfully coped with state trials. Later it became known that the complex entered service in the engineering troops.

The creation of the BMR-3MS armored clearance vehicle has been reported in the past. This sample is most similar to the BIS-3MA and represents its export version. Despite the differences of a technical nature, the export engineering machine retains all the functions of the basic model and is able to cope with its combat missions. Information about the development of a robotic complex based on BMR-3MS has not yet appeared.

So far, the BIS-3MA Vepr has passed all the necessary tests and received a recommendation for adoption. In the recent past, a contract appeared for the mass production of such equipment, and NPK Uralvagonzavod launched the assembly of machines. In July last year, the Ministry of Defense announced the receipt of the first batch of new engineering vehicles. This technique was transferred to a part of the engineering troops of the Russian army. The next delivery took place in January 2018, this time the vehicles went to serve in the compound of the engineering troops of the Eastern Military District.

"Weep" several times became exhibits of various military-technical exhibitions. In addition, they already had to take part in combat training activities. In September, during the Vostok-2018 exercises, several BMR-3MA vehicles ensured the passage of troops through the minefields of the conditional enemy. As reported, these tasks were solved in a manned and remotely controlled configuration.

Recently, Russian engineering troops receive and master new mine clearance machines. Serial production and supply of products BMR-3MA is of particular importance for the development of ground forces. First of all, the fact is that the new model of special equipment is not just based on the new chassis, while maintaining the previous functions, but also gets new features. Unlike previous engineering machines, the “Vepr” can operate both under the driver’s control and as part of a robotic complex. This gives engineering troops obvious advantages.

The systematic development of engineering armored vehicles led to a qualitative breakthrough. The latest model of the demining machine does not just repeat the previous ones at a different technological level and using a different base, but offers new features and capabilities. Thus, the BMR-3MA “Vepr” armored mine clearance vehicle can be considered a real breakthrough that increases the potential of engineer units of the engineering forces.
