Cars Aurus. In terms of technology
It is worth recalling that the first information about the promising "Single Modular Platform" (UMP) appeared a few years ago, shortly after the start of this project. For some time new data did not appear, but by now the situation has changed. About the project EMP / "Cortege" talked a lot at different levels, up to the leadership of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In addition, from some time on the exhibitions began to appear the individual components of future machines. In particular, the "premiere" of the new engine took place in 2016 year.
As a result, by now many aspects of the EMP project and the features of Aurus cars, which have become its first and main result, have become known. The main source of official information became reports from FSUE “NAMI”, who was the lead developer of the new project. In addition, individual messages came from other contributors. Also about the project told dignitaries. For example, a number of important statements were made by the Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov.
Also not without other sources. Several domestic TV channels made their documentaries about Aurus, and also published various news about him. There were other sources of information. For example, at the end of November, a part of the project was revealed by Dmitry Pronin, the former head of the Directorate for Perspective and Search Projects of NAMI (youtube-channel MONSTROCHOD). All this allows you to make a very detailed picture, revealing the technical features of the latest domestic cars.
Project participants
The development of the EMP project in its current form began in the year 2013. The head executor of the work was the Central Research Automotive and Automotive Institute. The project was implemented with the direct support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The state took upon itself both the financing of the project and the solution of certain organizational issues.
At different stages, various organizations, both domestic and foreign, joined the “Cortege” program. For example, a significant contribution to the research and development work on the subject of new engines was made by the German organization Porsche Engineering - a private German “analogue” of our NAMI. The transmission for EMP was developed with the leading role of the Russian company KATE. Various suppliers of necessary units from Russia and other countries have joined the mass production of machinery. The final assembly of the machines is carried out at the pilot plant NAMI, but in the near future, the production of some samples will be transferred to Sollers.
In total, at the moment in the program "Cortege" / EMP participates around 150 various enterprises of the automotive and engineering industries. About half of the program participants are Russian organizations and enterprises. A significant part of the units is still being acquired abroad, but the share of imported components is planned to be reduced. As a result, the number of domestic manufacturers and suppliers will grow.
The EMP project is unique to modern stories our automotive industry. First of all, this is due to the number of participants and their roles in the project. In recent decades, not a single domestic car project has collected such a large cooperation. The same can be said about the significance of new cars. It is expected that the various results of the EMP program will find application in the creation of new types of automotive vehicles.
Platform Motors
At the heart of the project "Cortege" lay the idea of a modular platform, the configuration of which may vary in accordance with the requirements. On a common platform, it was planned to build a premium limousine, sedan, minivan and other options for cars. They should have been different constructive solutions, as well as a complete set. In particular, different engines are offered for different machines.

For the new platform they decided to develop a whole family of engines. NAMI formed the technical requirements for this product and began to develop it. The German company Porsche Engineering, which has a serious research base for the creation of promising engines, was attracted to this R & D project. Russian and German experts conducted the necessary research and formed the look of the future engine. At the same time, as it was repeatedly stated, the Russian technical assignment, Russian technologies and the specifics of the new product were taken into account during the development.
The most powerful product in the range is the V12 engine with 850 hp. with a torque of 1320 N * m. This engine is equipped with a Quadro turbo-type supercharging system based on four superchargers, each of which serves three cylinders. Direct fuel injection is used. Due to the boost in the fuel rail, a pressure of 250 atm is created. Each cylinder has four valves, which requires four camshafts. The latter are driven by chains. There is a system for changing the speed of the camshafts in accordance with the operating mode of the engine.
All the major large aggregates of the new engine are made of special-purpose aluminum alloy. When casting, new technologies are used. Due to this, the dry weight of the engine from NAMI is only 310 kg. The product is completed with all necessary additional devices. Engine operation is controlled by electronics.
The V12 engine was offered for installation on "older" cars - primarily in the Senate limousine. However, its development has not yet been completed, and therefore the premium segment is being completed with the V8 hp 600 engine, built on the same solutions. Other models of the Aurus family will need to be equipped with a different power unit. We are aware of ongoing work on the V6 engine. Earlier this year, they also presented the appearance of an inline four-cylinder engine with an 245 horsepower. with torque 380 N * m. The Quadruple weighs only 150 kg and is unified with other family patterns for some nodes.
Gearbox evolution
For Aurus, a nine-speed automatic transmission of a new type was developed. The history of this product is very interesting, as well as its potential in the context of the development of automotive technology of other classes. The fact is that in the distant past a similar automatic transmission, built on the same solutions, could appear on production cars of domestic production, but this did not happen.

Back at the beginning of the 2000s, the Russian company KATE developed a new version of the AKP. It was a planetary box without a torque converter, which had seven forward gears. Such a product was intended for new VAZ cars with transverse engine placement and front wheel drive. The new domestic AKP differed from the existing analogs at a higher price, but at the same time showed advantages of a technical nature. Unfortunately, the cost was the deciding factor. It was decided to abandon the development of "KATE" in favor of other automatic transmissions, less expensive and bold in terms of design.
Later, after the launch of the project "Cortege", the company "KATE" on the basis of the decisions of the existing project has created a promising AKP. The product R932 is intended for use on vehicles with longitudinal engine placement and all-wheel drive, which affected its layout and dimensions. Planetary gears were used again, and again they abandoned the traditional automatic transmission torque converter. Due to the new schemes, including unique and patented, high efficiency is ensured.
The R932 box has nine forward gears and one reverse. At the input shaft, power is allowed up to 630 kW at torque up to 1000 N * m and rotation speed up to 6000 rpm. The prototype had a length of 730 mm with a diameter of the order of 450 mm. Product weight - less than 140 kg. The operation of the automatic gearbox and gear changes are controlled by electric drives with remote control.
Representative chassis
There are no revolutionary technical innovations in the design of the undercarriage of Aurus cars, but in this case it is of interest. In this case, as follows from the available data, we are talking about the modular architecture of the chassis. Depending on the modification and purpose, the machine can receive certain units of special purpose.
The front wheels of the car get an independent suspension on two levers with a double lower hinge. In some versions, the front axle can be supplemented with its own gear and clutch, providing the inclusion and disabling of all-wheel drive. The rear wheels are suspended on a system with four levers. Some modifications of the car can be equipped with controlled elastic suspension elements that change the parameters of the chassis.
Another feature of the chassis of the "older" cars of the line can be classified as a safety feature. Limousine for important people can be equipped with wheels with hard inserts that provide movement with punched tires. Naturally, the “simple” modifications of Aurus cars will not have such equipment.
Exterior and safety
The history of the creation of a recognizable appearance of the cars EMP / "Tuple" is well known. First, the exterior was adopted based on the characteristic appearance of the ZIS-110 machine and modern solutions. Subsequently, the exterior of the body was reworked several times, and as a result, the Aurus car came out in its current form. Some ideas of the very first variant were saved, but they were supplemented with modern “fashionable” elements.

However, the new body for a limousine, first shown in May of this year, is of interest not only from the point of view of its appearance. For dignitaries, a special modification of the car with built-in protection against various threats is offered. Official sources have not yet disclosed the design features of the protection and its characteristics. The reasons for this are clear, but objective factors do not interfere with making various assumptions.
Apparently, Aurus Senat Limousine is equipped with a full-fledged armored capsule, forming a single habitable volume with seats for the driver and passengers. Under the entire outer surface of the body should be placed armor parts with a sufficient level of strength. In the openings of the body are installed relatively thick multilayer armored glass with a given level of protection. Probably, this machine design provides all-view protection from bullets of all calibers.

Also previously mentioned the possibility of continuing the movement after the explosion of a mine. Not least, this is due to the use of internal inserts in the wheels, which assume the weight of the machine after the destruction of the tire.
In terms of technology
This year, the domestic industry for the first time showed finished cars on the “Unified Modular Platform” under the names “Cortege” and Aurus. Much has been said about the significance of this project for the domestic automobile industry, for the prestige of the country, etc. At the same time, technical aspects of the new project are of particular interest. It is not difficult to notice that in order to create Aurus cars, Russian enterprises had to solve a lot of serious problems and develop a large number of completely new components. Thus, the EMP project became a serious impetus for the development of domestic automotive science and technology.

More than 70 domestic organizations responsible for the development of new components, as well as for the production of various products, were attracted to the project. Thus, the project mobilized the automotive industry and allowed a mass of enterprises to be "at the forefront." They were able to create new components, as well as master new technologies and production. The participation of several dozen foreign companies allowed domestic specialists to gain access to their developments.
According to the statements of various individuals at one level or another who are related to the EMP project, in the future, developments on the “Cortege” may find application in creating new cars of all main classes. Various components and technologies developed for premium vehicles can be useful when creating mass-class cars. For example, a “reduced” engine is already being created, and there is also a ready-made simplified automatic transmission for passenger cars.
Recent news claims that next year Aurus cars will go on sale, and potential customers will be able to purchase cars in any presented configuration. The prices for such equipment have not yet been published, but it is already clear that a considerable amount will have to be paid for the new car. As planned, the new cars will enter the representative and higher sector of the market. However, it is now clear that the EMP project - as research and development work - will affect other areas and sectors of the market. However, the timing of the emergence of new available cars with elements and solutions of the project "Tuple" has not yet been specified.
