Extraordinary HD-1, or "Krypton" on steroids. Who do we need to learn from?

42
The major international aerospace exhibition "China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition 6" ("China Airshow 11"), held from November 2018 to 2018, 2018 in Zhuhai, China, provided visitors with the opportunity to get acquainted with one of the richest and most intriguing expositions from a conglomerate of defense industry companies Celestial. In addition to the full-size demonstrator of the promising stealthy attack-reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle XY-820, equipped with two internal compartments of high-precision missile and bomb weapons, as well as the concept of a unique operational-tactical missile system WS-600L, capable of striking enemy surface and ground targets, simultaneously forcing Operators of the P-8A "Poseidon" until the last moment think that they are dealing with an HQ-9 or C-400 air defense system, armed with cameras, the guests of the China Airshow 2018 were able to capture the layout of the HD-1 multipurpose tactical missile.

In Mikhail Zherdev's photo-compilation, published by the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (Center AST) BMPD 5 in November 2018, we see a far from conventional tactical cruise missile or ballistic missile equipped with a two-stage rocket or solid propellant rocket ramjet engine, solid propellant accelerating engine in the combustion chamber of the IRPD and solid propellant starting accelerator. The engine of the starting stage and the additional upper stage engine, whose fuel charges burn out in about 7 — 10 s, give the HD-1 rocket speed in 1900 — 2200 km / h, and also bring it to the more rarefied layers of the troposphere (to a height of 4 — 7 km) . Thanks to this, the launch and stable operation of the integral rocket-ramjet engine become possible, and the consumption of its solid-fuel gas generator is noticeably reduced, which ultimately significantly increases the range of the tactical missile.

According to informed Chinese sources in October, the successful HD-1 fire tests have already been completed, and the product from the young private company Guangdong Hongda Blasting Company was attracted to the delegation of the Pakistan Defense Ministry. Such keen interest of Pakistani military specialists to the new "straight-through" rocket is explained not only by the traditional dependence of Islamabad on modern Chinese military technologies against the background of the ongoing territorial dispute with Delhi regarding the state of Jammu and Kashmir, but also by excellent HD-1 flight parameters, which are disclosed GHBC headquarters has no plans. Nevertheless, based on direct-flow missile projects such as the X-31A / AD anti-ship missiles (according to AS-17 “Kripton” NATO codification), the Indian XD-SAM / SFDR anti-aircraft missile from DRDO, the Chinese long-range air combat missile PL -15, European Meteor URVB and Japanese XASM-3 anti-ship missiles, it is easy to conclude that HD-1 will have high-speed and maneuverable qualities that meet or even exceed BrahMos multi-purpose tactical missiles based on our 3XXNX anti-ship missiles. Onyx".

HD-1 multipurpose surface-to-surface tactical missile

While the BrahMosa and Onyxes, equipped with one nose air intake with a central body (“conical flow”), have a marching speed of the order of 2700 — 3100 km / h (at high altitudes), the missiles, whose ramjet inlet devices are represented by two or with four rectangular side air intakes of the so-called “two-dimensional flow” (internal compression), often allowing rockets to realize speed in 3,5 — 4,5М. This feature can be traced when comparing the layout of the input devices of a ramjet ramjet "BrahMos" and the Japanese HASM-3: the latter, equipped with two rectangular air inlets, has a speed of up to 3600 km / h. The Chinese HD-1 has a two-dimensional 4 rectangular air intake, which, with a fairly small mid-section, will provide it with speed within 4-4,5М at high altitudes and 3 — 2,5М at medium and low altitudes. As you can see, the speed capabilities of this product are uncommon, and this fact alone puts it on a level higher than, for example, the American AGM-88E AARGM anti-radar / multipurpose rocket, or our X-XNUMUSHK, equipped with standard solid-propellant rocket engines, after “ burnout ”of which the flight speed is reduced to 58 — 2,5, not allowing to make anti-aircraft maneuvers.

Moreover, the impressive elongation of the housing allows you to place in the internal volume of the HD-1 more and specialized valve regulating the flow of the gas generator to the combustion chamber IRPD. With this device, the gas generator is saved on the main part of the trajectory while maintaining speed at the level of 2,0 — 2,5M, which allows it to accelerate to 3500 km / h at the moment of diving to the target. The work of the IRPD on the final leg of the flight ensures the implementation of intensive anti-missile maneuvers with overloading in 25 — 30G. Today, none of the missiles equipped with a solid propellant rocket motor (except for the Iskander-M 9М723-1) have such qualities. As for the HD-1 guidance system, here we are talking about a multi-frequency active-passive radar seeker designed to “capture” both surface and ground radio-emitting and radio-contrast targets of the enemy. It is integrated with a GPS module and an inertial navigation system. Consequently, to suppress its guidance regimes, it will be necessary to use the most complex spectrum of electronic countermeasures. Export deliveries of HD-1 of the Pakistani army, as well as the Armed Forces of the States of Asia Minor, are able to completely change the balance of forces in several regions at once.

Something China AL-31F and modifications can not copy as it should, but here such a bunch of complex rocket engines, comrade Stanislavsky, to the stage

then why does Russia turbofan engines have a variety of dimensions and capacities, but there is no hypersonic ramjet? At least on serial products

Turbojet engines have a variety of dimensions and capacities

If everything were so good, then the MiG-29 would be single-engine, and the first (only) new civilian PS-14 would not have been created for the first time since the collapse of the USSR only in 2017/8. Yak-130 would not have had Motor Sich, as well as helicopters ... And such a "cool" Al-31 (of different series) would not have started with the Su-17/22/24 (Al-21) out of 80 yy
PS: So what about the "bunch" of engines? There is Al-31/41 and RD-93, that's, in a big way, that's all (for the military). The D-30F1 on the MiG-31 is from a different era ..

But what about the trend of the season, stealth? How can it "squeeze" its EPR with such surfaces?
And another question, is there any sense in running into one step? Perhaps a bicoliber, two-stage missile (proposed by the Gryazev-Shipunov tandem) is much more promising? And after shooting the booster stage, the area decreases, plus one more target on the radar in the form of the first stage ..... All the same, they are ingenious designers and their ideas require analysis and refinement for modern technologies and materials.

      ==========
The fact that Yevgeny Damantsev often pleases VO readers with very good articles is of course a fact! True, this article raises some questions .... For example:
".... Such a keen interest of Pakistani military specialists in the new" ramjet "missile is explained by ..... excellent flight performance parameters of the HD-1, to disclose which GHBC headquarters does not plan..... "
The question is right away, so where do they come from reasoning about speed "....within 4–4,5 M at high altitudes and 3–2,5 M at medium and small... "; ability to perform" ...intensive missile defense maneuvers with an overload of 25-30G..... "??? request
Was this information REALLY SOUND, or is it purely speculative, theoretical reasoning of the author? If the first is true, then the conclusion is that "....Pakistani army’s HD-1 export deliveries, as well as the forces of the states of Asia Minor are able to finally change the balance of forces in several regions at once... ... " well founded!
If the second is true (and these are just copyright assumptions), then highly doubtful!! Since it is not a fact that the rocket REALLY has such outstanding characteristics .... Here it would be necessary to understand !!
PS Well, the author doesn’t care thank you! drinks

An interesting dependence of the maximum speed on the location of the air intake. But what about the E-150 ... 152 Mikoyan, SR-71? They all have air intakes with a central body. Here is a large diameter radar with such an arrangement can not be placed.

in my opinion, a design with a "central" body (with large dimensions and weight) can always provide high speed at the final stage, due to the wearable stock of oxidizer

Why is a ramjet an oxidizer? On "Onyx" the layout with the "central" body made it possible to achieve compactness in comparison with the "Mosquito" and, accordingly, the convenience of placement in the TPK and on the aircraft carrier, as well as some gain in weight with an increased range

Before singing songs on the theme "oh, we are behind, the boss is gone," it would be worth taking a closer look at this know-how. And upon closer examination, it is clear that this is a rehash of our mosquito rocket. This is what cannot be taken away from the Chinese, they know how to breathe into old developments new life. On the other hand, our defense industry has not just focused on solid fuel systems. Straighteners are very capricious when actively maneuvering.

All given quantitative parameters of the Chinese rocket are an invention of the author of the article.

At the same time, the author clearly got lost in two pines - either his side air intakes are more effective than the central one in achieving maximum speed, then the cruising speed of a Chinese missile (2M) is half the cruising speed of the Russian-Indian Brahmos (4M). Naturally, the flight range with a lower cruise speed will be greater (due to a decrease in aerodynamic losses), but a high speed is needed to protect against air defense, otherwise the most optimal speed would be 0,8M, at which the Tomahawk and Caliber turbojet cruise missiles fly ".

High speed (up to 5M) when diving on a target for a rocket with side air intakes and a solid-fuel ramjet with an adjustable gas generator is nothing at all: if necessary, this parameter is achieved with a small rocket booster (like the detachable warhead of the anti-ship version of the KR "Caliber").

And as it was correctly noted above, the missile body with side air intakes is an excellent corner reflector for radio emission from air defense radars.

PS As for the training: the Chinese comrades are slowing down not childishly - ballistic rather than cruise missiles are now in trend.

The Iskander-M's accuracy is 5-7 meters, including for moving targets.

The Chinese do not have an analogue of our over-the-horizon "Container" radar with a detection range of 6000 km, so they have nothing to direct their MRBMs at enemy ships (Chinese optical reconnaissance satellites do not count - they do not work in cloudy conditions and the frequency of their scanning of the ocean is about once every day).

Well, unless we organize information leakage from our "Container" laughing

DF-21 and DF-26 also use radar satellite target designation (there is a satellite constellation and not just one telescope).
It is strange that you are comparing the Iskander OTR up to 500 km with the DF-21 and DF-26 IRBMs 1700 -4500 km
"Container" has a range of up to 3000 km and for air targets.

How does GNS accuracy relate to missile range? For you personally, homing missiles depends only on speed when approaching a target (when 5M is exceeded, plasma formation begins).

Where did you find the Chinese radar satellite?

Google Brahmos 400 - you'll learn a lot about its speed.

// Export deliveries of the Pakistani army’s HD-1, as well as the armed forces of the countries of Asia Minor, are capable of finally changing the balance of forces in several regions at once. //
What can be changed there with one type of tactical missile? It still needs to be tied to the plane and given to the control center. And also to make a price tag at the level of "nowhere below" and a lot.
