India: Let's invest in the eastern branch of the ITC - to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Siberia

25
The other day, the Indian authorities announced that they were ready to invest in the South-North International Transport Corridor (ITC) (also known as North-South), an agreement on which was reached back in 2000 year. All these years, India clearly showed no interest in the transport artery, which was initially positioned as an alternative to the Suez Canal. We are talking about the ITC project, which in the future should connect Indian Mumbai with Russian St. Petersburg through Bandar Abbas (Iran) and Baku (Azerbaijan). The total length of this route is about 7 thousands of kilometers.

It has now become known that India intends to invest in the so-called eastern branch of the MTC. Discussion of the possibility of creating such a branch was conducted in the framework of the four-sided meeting, in addition to the Indian representatives were representatives of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran. This is reported by the Indian newspaper The Economic Times.

The essence of the project is that a transport hub can be organized in Iranian territory. One of its branches is the one that was originally conceived: from Mumbai to St. Petersburg. The other - through the countries of Central Asia - in the direction of the Urals and Siberia, with subsequent access to the ports of the Pacific Ocean.

A meeting with Iranian, Kazakh and Turkmen partners was organized with the participation of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India. So, from Kazakhstan there were representatives of the Kazakhstan Temir Zholy Express JSC ("Kazakhstan Railway Express"). At the same time, the question was discussed that the MTC may begin on Indian territory not in congested Mumbai, but in the port of Mundra (the state of Gujarat). He is closer to the Iranian Bandar Abbas.

India: Let's invest in the eastern branch of the ITC - to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Siberia

The Indian side at the meeting was represented by major businessmen - representatives of 30 companies from the transport, freight and logistics sectors, including Tuberose Logistics.

Testing the route Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran-India is planned to be held by the end of this year. It is reported that already at the initial stage of the implementation of the program to create the eastern branch of the ITC, the project will increase the trade turnover between India and Kazakhstan 3 times. Today it is a little over a billion dollars, which does not suit any of the countries.

It is planned that the Turkmen Turkmenbashi port and Kazakhstan’s Aktau and Atyrau will be involved on the route.

At the same time, the route in the Turkmen direction may also have a railway component.

If this logistic branch is recognized as efficiency, then the eastern branch of the MTC will find its continuation on the Trans-Siberian Railway.

In this case, India’s desire to compete with the Chinese project “One Belt. One Way” is clearly visible.

Hindus can do anything, but more often than not, it ends after a long talk. So I trust them a third of a percent more than the Yankees, whom I do not believe at all.

But at least in Kazakhstan, CARMET belongs to Lakshmi Mitall and the demand for steel is growing, even noticeably, iron ore prices jumped by almost three times.

And you want to live for a long time at the expense of the constructed enterprises of the Soviet Union and with them explored deposits of oil, gas, uranium, etc.

There is an older North-South transport corridor project as an alternative to the Suez Canal. You can look at the wiki. Therefore, the Indians are not alone. And the project is more international than Indian.

For a long time, India was swinging with its participation. It is clear that money is a pity. And how many opportunities have already been missed. Perhaps cargo flows from India could seriously compete with the Chinese, with its serious focus on European markets. hi

At the moment, everyone who has the opportunity and who is not lazy, even if they are trying to build some kind of corridor or route finance, it’s worth remembering Ukraine - China, which ended in a grandiose zilch, so that hell knows how it will end, and the Indians they don’t want to flush money into the toilet, so they are in no hurry. hi

There is no sense the Indians are late. Baku-Tbilisi-Kars can already accept goods from China through Central Asia. There are two types of rails, both Soviet and European rails with the possibility of 6-5-10 million tons up to 20-25 million tons in the future. roads are problems so far but have recently been put into operation, while running-in and discussion of tariffs between countries. If the Indians are Europe’s target, then it’s real. And if Russia is the final goal, it’s easier to complete the railway between Iran and Azn than to mess in the ports. It seems on a political move, with any case, Az-en will not go hunting for India’s gamble and agree only thanks to the Russian Federation. Too good relations with Pakistan, with the only country in the world that fully supports Az-an. Even more than Turkey is politically certain . The only country in the world that does not recognize Armenia as a country as a whole, no diplomatic relations, not to mention economic ones. And more than once she stated her readiness to send an army to Karabakh, Az-an did not even see such steps from Turkey. In Turkey, only in words and Pakistan will do it and Az-en does not remain in debt to help with any need.

Rails with rails, but water transport is the cheapest! When building canals from north to south, the railway will lose! The only question is who will finance the construction and who will own the channels. Everything else is secondary!

Water canals are the largest thrombosis of water transport. Co-construction of new channels is clearly a losing option. To the bow of railway and water transport in transcontinental transport, the most advantageous view. Highway North-South, long overdue need. Only you need to initially settle the best options. Create a port in the Persian Gulf to the north, including IRAK and other countries, and the place of the port terminal in the Bandare-Muhsharas region is suitable for this ... There are many beneficiaries on this route.

Lek3338, the fact is that the Iran-Turkmenistan-Kazakhstan railway line with access to the Russian Federation was built a couple of years ago. Perhaps that is why testing the eastern version will be before the end of the year. hi

yes, apparently this is the best marker of the situation with Silk and Indus position in the world (Eurasia)
but it will be known only after several years - while in secret everyone calculates the potentials of their additions-intentions.
and then it will be too late-- the trains will go and the elbows will only have to be bitten cautiously and late

While the United States runs into Iran, there are unlikely to be large investments in the local railways and other infrastructure associated with this project. Of course, they show interest, but I think a little I want to invest billions at the same time at the risk of shaking them. So while the situation with Iran is unstable and the project will be in limbo.

A few years ago, the expansion of this project was considered jointly by the Iranian-Kazakh side. Friends even several times did the shipment of products to Malaysia via Bandar Abbas.

It seems that the Indians also understand the weakness of the transport route by sea. In the wake of China, they paid attention to land delivery options.

      good
This is good news, especially when they spoke about the possibility of extending the line to the Ural branch in the light of work on the Northern Latitudinal Route, which will extend it to the sea. So the line promises to be in demand!

In the 41st, I remember there were "golden" columns, supplies for our Red Army .. Thank you Iranians!

Russia will receive little from this corridor, especially as a transit country. The tariff policy of Russia is repulsive, most of the imports by sea Iran / India now goes through Kazakhstan, because there is cheaper in all respects. The railway route is only western - through Azerbaijan or eastern - Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan, by sea - we do not have ro-ro vessels on railway wagons and the ports are not adapted. And in Azerbaijan, from the time of the USSR, there was a railway ferry to Turkmenistan (Baku-Krasnovodsk) and the infrastructure remained. Then it rests on our Russian Railways - the cost of transportation is great. For example, it is now easier, faster, and sometimes cheaper to bring a truck from Iran than by sea or railway. In Iran, from the port of Abbas to the southern ports of the Caspian, as a rule, road transportation is because railway is also very expensive, because they have two standards - British and like ours, i.e. it is necessary either to overload, or to change pairs on cars. So calculate the transportation, transshipment in 3 minimum ports, freight, etc. In addition, with Iran and India, we mainly work only for export. With rare exceptions, they come from Iran, raisins, dates, pistachios, tomato paste, stone (granite, marble - to our monuments). There - equipment (including dual-use), metal, timber, grain, chemistry, petroleum products. They want to sort of establish container lines, but it comes down to sanctions - the owner will not send European containers to Iran, there are few Iranian containers, Indian ones are in the Chinese direction. So everything goes the old way cheaper.
