The monument to the pilot-hero Roman Filipov, who died in Syria 3 February this year, was installed in the city of Cheremkhovo, Irkutsk region. The sculptural composition is an airplane soaring into the sky from the runway, Interfax reports.
As the mayor of Cheremkhovo, Vadim Semenov, explained, Roman Filipov had no connection to the city, since he was not born, did not grow up, and did not serve in Cheremkhovo. A monument to him is installed as a Hero of Russia, a monument to his feat. Earlier in the Soviet Union there was a tradition to erect monuments to heroes, without becoming attached to their biographies, so the city decided to revive this tradition and erect a monument to Filipov, admiring his courage and his feat.
The initiators of the installation of the monument to the hero pilot were made by students of the Cheremkhovsky College of Mining, and they came up with a proposal back in February - immediately after the media reported on the death of Filipov. The city supported the initiative of the students and allocated a place for installation in the city grove.
The attack pilot Filipov was killed on 3 in February of 2018, when his Su-25 was shot down over the Syrian province of Idlib. The pilot ejected, but was surrounded. Shot from the militants to the last bullet, then blew himself up with a grenade. Roman Filipov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Russia.
