US media outlets report that the Marine Corps is "killing the modernization program" of amphibious amphibious armored vehicles Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAV). We are talking about armored vehicles that were planned to be upgraded using new onboard systems to the updated version of SAIC. It was also planned to increase the armor protection, install a new engine and transmission, upgrade the suspension.
The representative of the US Marine Corps, Manny Pacheco, states that the bulk of the previously planned AAV modernization works will not be carried out.
Pacheco:
The Marine Corps has spent approximately $ 125 million US dollars on upgrading AAV for survival, and is currently preparing to master another $ 96 million, which, after abandoning the modernization program, will have to be redistributed to other needs.
Earlier, the US Department of Defense was going to keep AAV amphibians in operation until 2035. By that time, it was planned to launch the mass production of the new amphibious amphibian ACV (Amphibious Combat Vehicle). But, reportedly, the desire to optimize costs leads to the fact that in the United States they decided to abandon the full modernization of AAV armored amphibians.
Pacheco:
AAV (70-ies of development) does not meet the needs of modern marine amphibious operations. Instead of continuing to invest in this armored vehicle, which even in an updated form will not provide adequate maneuverability, survivability and effectiveness of the landing, the Marine Corps believes that these funds should be used elsewhere.
For your information:
The amphibious assault project ACV suggests a wheeled version. In recent years, the United States has presented experimental design models of this technology. However, the general concept of creating the latest amphibious armored vehicle as a whole remains open.
