In Moscow, opened a monument to the founder of the Airborne Forces General of the Army Vasily Margelov
Speaking to the audience, the Russian Defense Minister said:
In his speech, Shoigu noted that Army General Margelov personifies a whole era in the formation and development of the Airborne Forces. And it was Margelov who not only retained the “winged guard” as an independent branch of troops, but also made these troops unique, adding that the commander’s iron will allowed the invincible spirit of the “blue berets” to be formed, turning them into a mobile and formidable striking force.
Among the guests invited to the opening of the monument were the son of Margelov, veteran of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Colonel-General Vitaly Margelov, Chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Vladimir Shamanov, Chairman of the Union of Russian Paratroopers Valery Vostrotin and other dignitaries.
The monument is a bronze sculpture of Margelov on a granite pedestal. The legendary commander of the Airborne Forces is depicted walking to his full height with his overcoat thrown over his shoulders. The author of the monument is a sculptor of the Studio of Military Artists. Grekova Chebanenko Alexey Dmitrievich.
Earlier, on July 31, a commemorative bust of the Hero of the Soviet Union, the founder of the airborne troops, General of the Army Vasily Margelov was installed on the street of the Ostrovsky town of Kineshma, Ivanovo region.
