Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the USA: the parties have started the creation of a business cooperation group
The work is already underway; the administration, the ministry and the Russian embassy have joined it, Antonov said at a discussion at the Valdai club following the RF-US summit, answering the question about creating an American-Russian business cooperation group.
However, according to him, in the process of work there are various difficulties, to which, first of all, the law passed by the Americans last year, where Russia is designated by the adversary of the USA. This document (the law “On counteracting the enemies of America through sanctions”) blocks the interaction in many directions.
Antonov also stated the need to resume communication between the parties in the 2 + 2 format (foreign ministers plus the ministers of defense of both countries).
This dialogue has long been time to resume, he said. It would be great if two ministers - Sergey Shoigu and James Mattis - met and spoke through all the problems.
In addition, at the meeting between Putin and Trump specific proposals were made to resolve the situation in the Donbas, Antonov said.
Earlier, the Bloomberg agency, citing sources, said that one of the settlement options is to hold a referendum in Donbass. This is a referendum under the auspices of several international organizations, in which residents of the DPR and LPR will speak about the status of the territories they control. According to the information, the heads of the Russian Federation and the United States decided not to publicly voice this idea in order to give Donald Trump time to think.
Antonov also spoke in favor of preserving the treaty on strategic offensive arms.
This contract is needed, and you need to think about what to do with it, the ambassador said. In his opinion, one could think about this treaty in the framework of the “nuclear five”. But to involve China, France and Britain in this process is a very serious problem. Perhaps in the future such a step will be possible, he noted.
