In India, the final stage of testing of the FH-155B “Dhanush” modified 77-mm towed howitzer with the increased length of 45 calibers completed. Within five days of 2 June 2018, a battery of six howitzers fired 50 shots at the Pokhran range on targets at a distance of 38 km. The firing was the final stage of testing at present, the howitzer is recommended for adoption by the ground forces of the Indian army.
The 155 mm FH-77B Dhanush towed howitzer is a modified licensed copy of the Swedish 155 mm artillery system from Bofors. Indian governance armory OFB plants received the technology for the production of guns as part of a contract signed with Bofors in 1987 for the purchase of 410 units. 155-mm howitzers FH-77B with a barrel length of 39 calibers and the supply of ammunition for them. Due to a corruption scandal, the contract was postponed for 25 years. Production resumed only in 2012, when prototypes of the modernized 155-mm towed howitzer with an increased barrel length of 45 calibers were made.
The first tests of the modified howitzers failed. The trunks of the two prototypes in August 2013, were broken during the shooting. Currently, problems, according to manufacturers, are eliminated completely. The firing range of the Dkhanush is 38 km, which is 11 km more than the Swedish FH-77B.
After the delivery of the first 6 howitzers, the Indian army plans to acquire another 12 howitzers during the year and another 36 - within two years. If the experience of operating the upgraded howitzers in the troops is considered positive, then the Ground Forces will receive all the howitzers provided for in the 414 contract.
