Another goal from the government: the VAT rate will increase to 20 percent
The Ministry of Finance immediately tried to explain what the increase was aimed at.
Statement by the head of the Ministry of Finance Anton Siluanov:
Siluanov said that these revenues, together with the additional income from the “completion of the oil and gas maneuver”, would turn into sources to finance the strategic tasks that the President had set in his message to the federal assembly. In other words, the new government signs that he has no tools for solving the tasks set by the president, except for raising the retirement age and tax burden.
A separate question: will the increase in the VAT rate lead to a rise in prices? It is hardly worth cherishing the hope that prices from the implementation of the government’s initiative on the VAT rate will be kept at least at the current level. Economic experts point out that as soon as the final decision on the VAT is made, inflation may jump.
At the same time, Dmitry Medvedev notes that the government will retain preferential VAT rates — for example, on the production of children's goods, interregional transportation, etc.
The government in general today is in shock. Apparently, the expectation is that the Russian team will win the Saudis on the “Luzhniki” field, and therefore pensions and VAT for the Russians will not even be in the background.
