Arctic all-terrain vehicle KamAZ "Arctic"

At the end of 2017, a new all-terrain vehicle on low-pressure tires with the working title KAMAZ-Arctic was presented to the public in Moscow as part of the Vuzpromexpo-2017 exhibition. The car is designed for the development of the territories of the Far North and is specially designed to work effectively in extremely harsh climatic conditions. The designers of KamAZ, SKB MAMI and two Moscow universities - MGTU named after. Bauman and Polytechnic. Tests of the new all-terrain vehicle for endurance should pass this year in Yakutia.

At the exhibition, a huge blue all-terrain vehicle weighing about 17 tons, with a ground clearance of more than 670 mm, created a real sensation and attracted the attention of ordinary visitors and specialists. There is nothing surprising. The most famous producer of diesel trucks in Russia from Naberezhnye Chelny has its own scientific and technical center (STC), which is working on the design of modern vehicles, but for the KamAZ, the presented Arctic all-terrain vehicle is a completely new line of work. Previously, all-terrain vehicles under the brand KAMAZ have not yet been produced. With its appearance and the functionality incorporated in it, the new car is quite different from other promising developments of the Russian auto giant.

The Arctic is currently attracting more and more attention. Four years ago, the Russian leadership announced the All-Russian project “Social and economic development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2020”. The program becomes even more relevant if the fate that approximately 20 percent of Russian territory is located beyond the Arctic Circle. The main objective of the program is the development of economic and social spheres of life in the region. In addition, this program involves the expansion of the scientific and technical base of the region through the creation and implementation of advanced technologies. In this regard, there is a need for high-quality and reliable car that could work even in harsh Arctic conditions, coping with its tasks in the winter period. The presented Arctic KamAZ-Arctic all-terrain vehicle will be of interest to at least EMERCOM employees, medical workers, as well as researchers and pioneers, the machine may be of interest to scientists and geologists. We should not exclude the fact that over time this development may be of interest to the military and representatives of various Russian law enforcement agencies.

The KamAZ-Arctic is an environmentally safe all-terrain vehicle designed to transport people and goods in the Arctic zones of Siberia and the Far East. An articulated frame was used in the car - it was developed in two versions: with wheel formulas 6х6 and 8х8. An all-terrain vehicle with a wheel formula 6х6 has already been built. It is equipped with huge low-pressure tires, each weighing a quarter of a ton. In essence, this is a snow and swamp vehicle that can be effectively used in the vast expanses of our country.

Presented in 2017, the all-terrain vehicle works on the classic KAMAZ engine V8 and is equipped with a manual gearbox. The certification of the novelty will pass as a snow and swamp vehicle. From the point of view of its design, this is a completely new development; KAMAZ has never created anything like this before. To work in the Arctic and the Far North, a new car must meet very stringent requirements. It should operate at ambient temperatures of minus 50-60 degrees Celsius. To move in conditions of complete lack of roads: not only on snow cover, but also in conditions of weakly bearing soils, in conditions of spring thaw, to work on winter roads. According to Sergey Nazarenko, the chief designer of the innovation KamAZ innovation cars, the key feature of the new all-terrain vehicle is the articulated frame: the car makes a turn not at the expense of its wheels, but at the expense of the “breaking” frame. This decision was dictated by the large dimensions of the wheels used: they are very wide in the arctic all-terrain vehicle and do not provide enough resources for normal turning.

Another important feature of the new products from Naberezhnye Chelny are very wide tires. With the help of such tires, the problem of the car’s ability to pass in special climatic conditions and on unstable soils: tundra, wetlands, snow snow (dense coarse snow) is successfully solved. The tires installed on the all-terrain vehicle can be of two sizes: 700 mm width (“Dimension” version) and width more than 1000 mm (“Oversize” version). The use of the “Dimension” version allows the arctic all-terrain vehicle to meet the allowed traffic regulations, which in turn allows the KAMAZ novelty to move freely on public roads, the all-terrain vehicle can reach speeds of up to 50 km / h. At the same time, the “Oversize” variant with wide tires is designed to move on soils with low bearing capacity. The ground clearance of the KAMAZ-Arctic all-terrain vehicle - 677 mm is also impressive. According to Nazarenko, thanks to the listed qualities, the novelty can be used as an “alfamobile” - a vehicle that will lead the movement of a convoy of other cars, leading ordinary cross-country trucks. The load capacity of the new northern giant is estimated at 13 tons.

One of the features of the Arctic all-terrain vehicle is the presence of a full-fledged comfortable residential compartment, designed to accommodate three people. Inside the residential module there are beds, a gasoline generator, electric inverters, drinking water supply, a kitchen with a hob and microwave oven, a toilet and even a shower. Also inside there is a TV, satellite phone. The design of the residential module was carried out by SKB MAMI specialists. The specialists of this company managed to fully combine the utilitarian properties of the all-terrain vehicle with a rather stylish appearance and well-thought-out ergonomics that meets all the criteria for a comfortable and autonomous stay in a residential module. You can get into the module by a special folding ladder. The residential module of the Arctic KamAZ-Arctic all-terrain vehicle, which will be officially certified as a snow and swamp vehicle, is a full-fledged living space in which you can live or wait for help in the most severe climatic conditions for at least three days. “At least three days, or rather a week or even more,” said Sergey Nazarenko, chief designer of the innovation KamAZ SEC. Additionally, air conditioners are provided in the residential module to help isolate its inhabitants from the northern “beast”: mosquitoes, midges and nasal debris.

In the summer of 2018, the new Arctic KamAZ-Arctic all-terrain vehicle will reappear at various exhibitions, and in the second half of summer it will go to the cold regions of our country. In addition to Yakutia, a car is waiting in Yamal. The second all-terrain vehicle with a wheel formula 8х8 will be ready by the end of this year. It is already known that he will receive the P6 power unit (this is a new KAMAZ six-cylinder in-line engine, created in cooperation with the German company Liebherr and closely approached the best foreign analogues), the new K5 cabin and an automatic gearbox.

            Hi Pash
I would have installed a primitive stove in a diesel fuel in a residential module. In the north, it obviously would not hurt. And the Glonas system would not be superfluous

I, Pasha, drummed myself a full northern length of service and I know what I'm saying. The machine may break down and it will be necessary to warm up with something before help arrives. You will not burn a solarium in the snow, and the wheels of this handsome man are heavy. So that a potbelly stove as NZ will definitely not be superfluous
Although I think that everything is already thought out by the designers. Even if not all, then during the test will be completed

Sorry to interfere, in many respects you are right, but I still would have made a potbelly stove multi-fuel so that it would work on both liquid and solid fuels. As for the rest: Kamaz-43114 and Kamaz-43118 seem to have worked well in cold climates, but there is one “BUT". Plastic tubes on the drive locks, their blowtorch can not be warmed up. Although we do not have the Arctic, but the north of the Amur Region, the problems are the same. At one time, Koreans in the Urgalles and Tyndales combines in the cabins of the Maz-509 logging trucks on the right side of the cab put firewood stoves and the cabin was relatively passable. Unfortunately, a photo of such a timber carrier could not be found.

hi In the KAMAZ-Arctic project, we are faced with the task in 2017-2018 to develop and manufacture two cars: one with a wheel arrangement of 6X6 and the second - 8X8. The car runs on a classic KAMAZ V8 engine, equipped with a manual gearbox. The machine will be certified as a snow and swamp vehicle. This is a completely new development in terms of design - KAMAZ has never created such machines before.
The maximum speed of KAMAZ-Arctic is no more than 50 km / h, load capacity 13 tons. The second car with an 8x8 wheel formula, equipped with a P6 power unit and a K5 cab, as well as an automatic transmission, should appear at the end of 2018. "

So out of curiosity, and how to pull it out if it gets bogged down when it crawls on oversized tires? Wait until the swamp freezes! We do not have augers. And about traffic rules, the use of low-pressure cars on public roads seems to be prohibited? And so it’s crap assembled on the stock nodes (redone) here on the native standard tires, KAMAZ locks are disposable, but here the diameter is much larger. The idea is good and not new, the articulated mans in the bearded year was offered on low-pressure tires (specially designed and not removed from the tractor, which will either crumble or become square in the cold - the implementation is shit! and not a cutlet made through an ass, but which will be pushed through by hook or by crook.

It is not necessary to pull it out, because such oversized tires do not get stuck and do not sink due to the very low pressure on the ground. He just swims through the swamp, not falling deep.

It’s good in theory, in practice, if you have tires on displacement that allow you to swim, when you plunge into a swamp they just spin in place. And for the Arctic, where I’m trying to shove it, you need to develop your own components from scratch (it’s nice if the consumables are the most common (bearings, rubber bands, etc.)). The best solution would be to use a motor wheel - the electric motors will not particularly warm up (not the desert) and the power plant (engine generator) can be made with a very high efficiency.

I can recommend on the basis of this machine to make self-propelled guns of the Archer type. From Archer, take the idea of placing ammunition on the swinging part, which will make the automation faster and more reliable. I remember that Lopatov did not like this self-propelled gun. And from Archer you should take full cover of the trunk in a transport position.
