On guard overseas. Border guards celebrate a double anniversary
One of the most recognizable military holidays of the Russian military calendar, so to speak, is the Day of the Border Guard. It is recognizable by the green caps of those who, in their years, stood or continue to stand guard over the borders of the Fatherland in the literal sense of the word: from the South Kuriles to the most western point of Russia - the Kaliningrad region.
To understand the very scope of the task of protecting the state border, you should pay attention to some facts about our borders. Their total length is comparable with almost 10-th radius of planet Earth - about 61 thousand. Km. Of these, more than 22 thousand. Km - land borders. Russia officially recognizes border conditions with 18-th countries of the world, and this is an absolute world record. We overland border with the Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Georgia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Poland, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Norway, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, China, and Mongolia. By sea, Russia borders directly with the United States of America and Japan.
The longest border of Russia is with the Republic of Kazakhstan: almost 6 thousand km - land and more than 7,5 thousand km - total (including sea). The shortest border area is with the DPRK: only about 39 km.
This year 28 May has a double holiday for the country's border guards. In addition to direct Border Guards Day, it is also the anniversary of the formation of the Border Guard of the country, if the starting point (as is customary today) to take 1918 year. It was then, 28 May 1918-th corresponding decree of the Council of People's Commissars was signed in Soviet Russia. On the basis of this decree, the General Directorate of the Border Guard Board was created, which at the first stage of its work faced great difficulties. The borders of the state were more like a sieve in the ongoing World War I and the Civil War. In fact, no one was actually guarding the borders for the simple reason that the outgoing power was clearly not up to defending the borders from an external enemy, and the incoming power saw enemies everywhere, but had neither the strength, nor the means, nor the tools to cope with it, deciding The first is the question of self-approval.
And against the background of this assertion of the Soviet government, it became obvious that without reliable protection of the borders with the government itself, it would be possible to say goodbye very soon. It was this fact that prompted Sovnarkom to the decision on the emergency formation of border units, which initially took those who would later be called "unreliable elements", "tsarist servants." These "servants of tsarism" (former officers of the Russian imperial army) should be given their due, they made a great contribution to the formation of the new system of protection of the state border, only the achievements of far from each of them were appreciated by the state.
Talking about the centenary of creating border guard, do not forget that it is not only the anniversary celebrated today. So, exactly 60 years ago - in 1958 year - the calendar of festive dates appeared Border Guards Day of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. It also became a kind of tribute to all those frontier guards who laid down their heads on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War, who first met the enemy on the frontiers of the Union and who together with others drove him later to Berlin.
Not forgotten feat of border guards in the defense of the Brest fortress of Sevastopol, Novorossiysk, Murmansk, other territories and cities.
Many soldiers-border guards received the title Hero of the Soviet Union after a long time after the accomplishments.
So, a native of the Voronezh region Gerasim Rubtsov, who commanded the 456th combined border guard regiment of the NKVD of the Primorsky Army of the North Caucasus Front, together with the regiment's military men, defended the main lines at the approaches to Sevastopol for 250 days. In total, the NKVD border guard regiment destroyed over two enemy infantry regiments, dozens tanks, artillery guns, two bombers. He received the Star of the Hero in 1965.
In the same 1965, the Hero's star was received by Lieutenant Andrei Kizhevatov, a native of the Penza Region, who on June 22 of 1941 headed the defense of the frontier guard and the headquarters of the commandant’s office. Under his command pograntsy repelled six (!) Attacks, twice counterattacked much superior in number and weapons of the enemy. He held the defense of the Brest Fortress at the Terespol Gate.
And there are hundreds of such heroic names of border guards. And not only during the Great Patriotic War.
22 June 1941 of the year, the political leader of the seventh outpost Vladimir-Volyn border detachment V.Petrov kept the crossing over the Western Bug for five hours. When finished cartridges to its machine gun, the officer waited for the approach of the Nazis and blew himself up with a grenade, destroying five enemy soldiers. His name is the same outpost, the defense of which he held together with other soldiers-border guards.
Border guards participated in dozens of armed conflicts in which the country had to participate.
And today, in peacetime, the servicemen of the PF FSB of the Russian Federation have to solve a whole complex of the most important tasks that the country faces: from ensuring access control for people and goods to suppressing terrorist encroachments, drug trafficking and cross-border trade weapons.
