The lead frigate of Project 17A was seriously damaged as a result of an accident at the Indian shipyard Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata - a 250-ton Goliaph gantry crane fell on the hull of a ship under construction, reports Rossiyskaya Gazeta with reference to the Defenseaviationpost.
The accident occurred on April 17, but it became known only now - “the shipyard’s management was hiding information on the emergency situation, as GRSE applied for an IPO (the first public sale of shares of the joint-stock company) several days before the accident,” explains the resource.
A collapsed gantry crane with a height of 47 meters and a span of 116 m was installed in the year 2013.
“Goliaph was assembled by an Indian company from European components and served two dry construction docks and a hull workshop where blocks of future 17A frigates were formed. The collapse occurred with a strong wind - its gusts reached 100 kilometers per hour. The wreckage of the mechanism blocked both docks and seriously damaged the shop. The unfinished frigate who was in one of the docks suffered the most, ”the article says.
The publication recalls that in 2015, the Indian Navy signed a contract with the shipyard for the construction of three promising ships of Project 17A. The lead ship was laid down in Kolkata in February 2017. His transfer the fleet planned for 2022. Now, according to Indian experts, the delivery deadline will be shifted to the right by at least 30 months.
