2 May 1945, the troops of the First Belarusian Front under the command of Marshal Zhukov, together with the troops of the First Ukrainian Front under the command of Marshal Konev, fully occupied the capital of Nazi Germany, Berlin. Most of the troops of the Berlin garrison, defending the city, realizing the futility of resistance, folded
weapon and surrendered to 2 May 1945 of the year at 3 an hour after noon. General Artillery Weidling, together with three German generals on 6, on the morning of May 2, crossed the front line, surrendering to captivity. After some time, General Weidling, who was in the headquarters of the 8 Guards Army, wrote an order of surrender. This document was multiplied and brought to the enemy units, which were defending in the center of Berlin, using loud-speaking installations and radio. As this order was transmitted to the defenders, resistance in Berlin ceased. By evening, the troops of the 8-th Guards Army troops the central part of the city was cleared from the enemy.

The whole operation to capture Berlin lasted 8 days, from April 25 to May 2 inclusive. By nightfall, Soviet troops captured more than seventy thousand enemy soldiers and officers. Among the prisoners were General Kurt Vetash and Lieutenant General Walter Schmidt-Danquart. Vice-Admiral Foss, Colonel Hans Rehior, Chief of Defense of Berlin, Colonel Theodor von Diefving, Chief of Staff of the 56 German Tank Corps, was also captured. Many fascist agitators, led by the first deputy Goebbels for propaganda and the press, were captured.
