The hero of Russia, Major Solnechnikov, who saved the soldiers at the cost of his life, erected a monument
The commander of the communications battalion, Major Sergey Solnechnikov, died heroically in an accidental explosion during combat training at the Belogorsk training ground. During the exercise of throwing grenades, an abnormal situation occurred. Grenade after throwing one of the soldiers hit the parapet of the trench and slid back.
Kombat instantly orient in the situation and covered his body with a grenade, which saved the lives of many soldiers. The wounded officer was taken to a military hospital in the town of Belogorsk. Military doctors fought for the life of a major, but they did not manage to save him.
An officer was buried on April 2 in his hometown of Volzhsky near Volgograd with all military honors. Hundreds of people came to see the hero-officer on his last journey to the city cemetery of Volzhsky.
Deputy Prime Minister Vasily Galushkin then offered to name one of the Volzhsky streets in honor of the deceased major. Earlier, the governor of the Amur Region offered to name Major Sergei Solnechnnikov in the new quarter of Blagoveshchensk.
On April 3, Major Solnechnikov was posthumously awarded the title Hero of Russia by presidential decree Dmitry Medvedev - "for heroism, courage and dedication shown during the performance of military duty."
Previously, the mother of the soldiers he rescued and the command of unit No. XXUM in the Amur Region, in which he served as a Sunflower, were called upon to award the deceased officer-hero.
