Modernization of the airborne troops: new intentions

32
The modernization of the Armed Forces of Russia continues. Special attention is paid to the airborne troops. As part of the "winged guard" there are new structures and formations, as well as purchases of the latest weapons and equipment. In recent years, the Defense Ministry has done a lot to improve the Airborne Forces, and does not plan to stop. A few days ago, the latest results of the modernization program of the troops, as well as some plans for the near future, became known.

March 12 official publication of the Ministry of Defense "Red Star" published material "Winged Guard increases its combat potential" by Alexander Tikhonov. The author of this publication talked with the commander of the airborne troops, Colonel-General Andrei Serdyukov. In his interview, the commander recalled the well-known facts, and also cited a number of new data on the modernization of the Airborne Forces. The new interview differed from other recent posts on this topic with thoroughness and detail.

One of the main goals of the current renewal of troops is to increase their numbers while simultaneously increasing their combat capability. According to A. Serdyukov, from 2012, the number of personnel of the airborne troops increased by 48%. More than 30, thousands of privates and sergeants are currently serving under contract. Contractors currently make up more than 70% of the total personnel of the Airborne Forces. In 2020, the share of contract servicemen will be increased to 80%.

In this case, the sergeant staff is already fully staffed with contractors. Also contract servicemen go to the positions of specialists in the operation of various weapons and equipment. First of all, they enter the service in battalion tactical groups. As noted by the Commander of the Airborne Forces, the number of such groups is constantly increasing.

To date, the structure of the Airborne Forces has undergone certain changes. Now the troops have four divisions, five separate brigades, as well as support units and educational institutions. The processing of the structure of the troops and the improvement of the control system lead to an increase in their combat capabilities.

The topic of supplying new material, in the first place, weapons and military equipment was touched upon. General Serdyukov said that deliveries under the State Defense Order from 2012 to 2017 have increased the share of the new weapons and equipment in the Airborne in 3,5 times. The number of modern armored vehicles increased by 2,4 times, anti-aircraft weapons - by 3,5 times. The share of modern means of landing all types has increased in 1,4 times.

As part of the latest programs in the airborne troops, more than 42 thousand weapons and equipment have already been received. Due to this, the maneuverability of the troops increased by 30%, the level of survivability - by 20%. The increase in fire damage is estimated at 16%. It is curious that in some areas there are simply outstanding successes. The direction of unmanned aerial vehicles is developing most actively. Since 2012, seven divisions equipped with such equipment have appeared in the Airborne Forces. The delivery of UAVs increased the capabilities of the troops in aerial reconnaissance 12 times.

A. Serdyukov revealed some details of the deliveries of military equipment and weapons that took place in recent years. Thus, the industry handed over five battalion sets of BMD-4M airborne combat vehicles and BTR-MDM armored personnel carriers to the troops. Seven artillery battalions are equipped with modernized self-propelled 2С9-1М self-propelled guns, as well as the newest reconnaissance and control points 1В119-1. The artillery units received the Sobolyatnik and Aistenok radar reconnaissance stations, due to which the divisions are integrated into the automated airborne command and control system. The main consequence of this is to reduce the time required to detect and hit targets.

The state defense order for the current 2018 year again provides for the purchase of new and repair of existing models of weapons and equipment. According to the Commander of the Airborne Forces, this year the troops will receive two battalion sets of BMD-4M and BTR-MDM vehicles. Artillery will transfer two battalions of self-propelled guns 2С9-1М. Air defense units will begin operating the MP-D and MRU-D reconnaissance and control systems. Radiation, chemical and biological protection will receive three regimental sets of reconnaissance chemical machines РХМ-5М.

Special attention is paid to modern means of control, namely the creation of a unified automated system that controls the work of the troops. Most of the combat units of the airborne troops are fully equipped with a modern Andromeda-D automated control system. Immediate response units are already fully transferred to such equipment. All this greatly enhances the capabilities of the troops by drastically reducing the time needed to bring the units on alert.

The result of 2018 supply of the year will be another increase in the share of modern material. According to current plans, according to the results of the nearest purchases under the new state defense order, this parameter will grow to 63,4%. The ultimate goal of the current State Armaments Program, the implementation of which will be completed in 2020, is to bring the share of new weapons and equipment to 75%.

The new material part does not stand idle and is constantly used in various combat training activities. Combat training units became a priority. According to A. Serdyukov, over the past five years, the number of training events has increased by 74%. Now annually 200 is performed by the fighters, thou. Thousand skydiving in different weather conditions, day and night. The number of parachute assault vehicles and equipment for the specified period has doubled.

Airborne troops regularly participate in surprise checks of combat readiness announced by the commander-in-chief. During these events, the Airborne Forces repeatedly demonstrated a high level of training and readiness to perform their tasks.

The commander of the Airborne Forces recalled the main goals and objectives of the current modernization of the troops. He noted that this type of troops in the future will play an important role in the country's military security system. The airborne troops will have to tackle new tasks, markedly different from those set for them just 10-15 years ago. These troops will now develop as the basis of the rapid reaction force.

The plans of the military department for the next few years envisage the direction of the main efforts to upgrade the material part and increase the level of training. By 2021, the share of modern weapons and equipment should reach 70%. Due to this, and with the help of new training events, it is planned to increase the level of personnel training.

It should be noted that the issue of modernization of the airborne forces in general and the material part of the troops in particular was already raised a few days ago by the command of this type of troops. So, March 4 "Red Star" published an interview with the Deputy Commander of the Airborne Forces on the airborne training, Lieutenant-General Vladimir Kochetkov. He spoke about the available means of landing, the latest models of this kind and plans for their development.

According to V. Kochetkov, the Bakhcha-U-PDS development project is currently being completed, the purpose of which is to create means of parachuting the airborne troops, such as the BMD-4А or BTR-MDM. An important feature of the new tools will be the possibility of landing a combat vehicle with a crew inside. State joint tests have already been completed, and this year new devices will go into service.

Work continues on the topic with the code "Parachute". This project proposes the creation of a unified parachute platform for vehicles and goods weighing up to 18 t. First of all, it will be used with KamAZ vehicles and equipment based on them, entering the troops. The product "Dalolet" is intended to drop personnel from altitudes 1200-8000 m at speeds of the aircraft to 350 km / h with a delay in opening the parachute to 10 with. Going down from the maximum height, the fighter will be able to fly to 60 km. At the same time, a container with a carrying capacity of 50 kg will be transported with it by parachute.

Several new projects are planned. Already in March, the “Renovation” should start, providing for the modernization of the D-10 and З-5 parachutes. The goal of this project is to adapt existing systems for use with the “Warrior” equipment. The R & D “Shelest”, launched this year, should end with the appearance of a new parachute system for landing airborne troops with a full set of service weapons and equipment.

New means of personnel training are being created. As General Kochetkov said, in the Ryazan Guards Airborne School, an aerodynamic installation was built to test the actions of a parachutist using wing-type systems. Multifunctional installation provides simultaneous training of five paratroopers at once with a full set of equipment and weapons. Last year, the design of the training complex UTK-VDP, intended for the initial parachute training, was completed. Already defined schedule for the supply of such products in schools and parts.

According to V. Kochetkov, the appearance of a number of new parachute systems for people and equipment will markedly increase the combat capability of the airborne troops. The ability to land any equipment in a given area and systems with a long range will significantly improve the mobility of troops. An important advantage of new products will be full compatibility with the equipment "Warrior".

On March 6, some details of the rearmament of the Airborne Forces were revealed by Defense Minister Army General Sergei Shoigu. This year this type of troops will have to receive Tanks T-72B3, BMD-4M airborne combat vehicles, BTR-MDM armored personnel carriers, D-30 howitzers, and other materiel. The total number of armored combat vehicles and artillery systems for the Airborne Forces, the delivery of which is scheduled for this year, is more than 30 units. Also, according to S. Shoigu, the development of controls, logistics, infrastructure and training facilities will continue. The troops will receive not only military equipment, but also reconnaissance and electronic warfare equipment.

March 14 Colonel General A. Serdyukov told RIA News on some plans to create advanced weapons especially for the airborne forces. According to him, the industry is currently working on a new anti-aircraft missile system with the cipher "Birdies". This short-range air defense system is created in accordance with special requirements, stipulating the possibility of parachute landing. So for the first time in stories Airborne troops will receive a missile system with similar capabilities.

As the commander of the Airborne Forces told, at present the “Birdies” project is at the stage of determining the technical appearance of the future complex. In the next few years, the necessary development work will be completed, after which the system will be able to go into service. According to current plans, the troops of the airborne system "Birdies" will go in 2022 year. Thus, the procurement of serial equipment will be carried out in the framework of the new State Armaments Program in force in the 2018-2025 years. The complexes of the new type are designed to replace the existing Strela-10М3 combat vehicles that do not have a number of critical capabilities for the Airborne Forces.

Several years ago, when drawing up a plan for the development of the armed forces, the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation decided to make airborne troops the basis of the rapid reaction force. To do this, the modernized army will need new weapons and equipment, improved communications and control, as well as other systems, systems, etc. Special attention should now be paid to the training of personnel. Acting within the framework of the approved plans, the Ministry of Defense has already been able to significantly increase the main indicators of the Airborne Forces; similar processes will continue in the future. And this means that in a few years the command of the troops will be able to proudly report on the full implementation of the tasks set and a new contribution to the country's defense capability.

Due to this, the maneuverability of the troops increased by 30%, the survivability level - by 20%. The increase in opportunities for fire destruction is estimated at 16%.

If everything is clear with the maneuverability and increase in the capabilities of fire destruction, you can even figure out and calculate it visually during the exercises, fulfill the standards, but how and by what indicators were the survivability calculated? Purely mathematically? Still interesting ... Or "empirically", with a real diverse fire exposure?
... are equipped with upgraded self-propelled guns 2С9-1М, as well as the latest intelligence and control points 1В119-1

1В119 is by no means "newest", and this is not a "point", but a fire control and artillery reconnaissance vehicle based on BMD. Most likely, only the modernization of the filling (communication, optics, electronics, etc.).
This year this type of troops will have to get the T-72Б3 tanks

The topic of tank units in the Airborne Forces has, of course, been discussed here more than once, but maybe someone owns the information, or even knows what these units will be called? One thing is clear that most likely they will be part of artillery regiments.

So, in fact, the Airborne Forces were such forces. I don’t remember a single conflict, wherever they were one of the first to participate. Especially 1990's.

        Very likely.
Although the “Hurricanes” with “Tornadoes” both “implemented”, they use it very successfully.
After all, the main goal is complete autonomy and independence from other branches of the armed forces and the military "bureaucracy", especially in the database zone ...

"Octopus" - not a tank in fact, but it was previously a question of increasing just the shock component.
"Boomerang" with a gun - very likely.
Actually, the T-72B3 didn’t accept a good life either ...

With the current concept of the use of airborne - hardly. For the Airborne Forces have long ceased to be used as parachute-landing, having turned into airmobile or even railwaymobile. smile
Rather, the Airborne Forces will receive normal artillery and air defense systems - at least at the divisional level.

From Anapa, the art regiment is slowly moving to new barracks near Raevka.
A couple of times I saw, passing through Novorossiysk, as there, the road T 72 with the emblems of the Airborne Forces cross.
There, the road just between the barracks, the park and the landfill passes.

        Although I personally am sorry.
I used to love to watch them train from the tower.
At one time, the son of schoolboy 2 08, drove to watch window dressing, the children screeched with delight, climbing the technique, as they did not understand, I do not understand.
Well, a resort is a resort, they sell land with centimeters,
now already on the site of the stadium and part of the park, houses were built.

In Anapa, the regiment was alien all the same, except for patrol and self-propelled guns, little happened there.
All exercises in Raevskaya took place. Everything was there. And now there are so many built up and this .. you get lost. Housing for officers entire blocks. You can’t find out the landfill ... the barracks, the boxes for milking equipment .. Soon, probably the road from Anapa to Novorossiysk will probably be closed in the valley, only left upstairs. And I'm glad, very happy. My 21 brigade joined the structure of this unit. We have something to remember.

Well, now the tank road to Raevka has already been usurped, before they drove tanks to study and then the airborne forces drove with their artillery,
Now they are not allowed on the asphalt.

The trouble with our airborne forces was, yes, I think, and it remains, obsessed with parachute landing of forces and assets, which, by the way, has never been used in practical combat operations when transferring significant forces and means. This led to the fact that the mobile paper divisions were completely unable to make long marches and transitions, so to speak, on their own. The Airborne Forces technique turned out to be trite for this. The other side of the obsession with the landing of equipment was its low security. And this also negatively affected the combat effectiveness of the airborne units. Possessing highly trained and well-motivated personnel, the paratroopers often acted as fire brigades, but the low protection of the equipment, weak firepower, and low operational reliability seriously reduced the potential of airborne units and formations. To such an extent that they had to be transplanted to motorized rifle equipment.
In this regard, I want to believe that these features will be taken into account during the modernization of the airborne forces, and the experience of training airborne personnel will be extended to motorized rifle and tank units.

I do not agree, the trouble with the airborne forces is not in parachute throwing, but in the fact that "regular troops" are trying to make airborne forces, which is essentially stupid due to the limitation of the total mass of the entire unit by the BTA. In my opinion, the Airborne Forces should be something like a partisan detachment, but at the same time have higher mobility and more powerful and effective means of destruction, in order to hit the largest number of targets in the least amount of time with limited ammunition. That is, in practical terms, you need to throw away everything that is not transportable by aviation (for example, T72 tanks), you need to give 152mm guns with adjustable ammunition, you need to give equipment with the ability to quickly mount additional armor (which would be transported to other aircraft and / or dropped by next flights) , you need to create unmanned transport vehicles for the delivery of resources (discharge from the BTA further disclosure and flight to the point of cargo discharge). It is necessary to change the parameters of the equipment and the organizational structure so that the unit can operate effectively in the absence of 80% of the composition, more precisely so that the unit can quickly split into smaller units with subsequent merging. That is, speaking practically it is necessary that in the same artillery each machine could fight alone, both due to MRSI and due to independent location determination.
Yes, a lot of things can be done, but this place is clearly not for discussing this topic.

The problem is that all good wishes for the return of the Airborne Forces to their original parachute role rest against two insurmountable obstacles:
        1. Limited availability of the BTA fleet.
        2. Disproportionate outfit of forces to ensure air supremacy and suppression of air defense on the flight route and in the landing zone.

This is not a reason, this is a consequence, but the reason is the use of an improper staffing structure in units, in fact, the Airborne Forces have reached an impasse in their development due to the use of the tactics of "everything is like in SV but desantiruemy with VTA." Therefore, I wrote above about changing the "technique И state structure "the second without the first is impossible even theoretically, and changing only the first without changing the second is useless.

This is not a problem at all, since on the one hand it will have to be provided for the operation of aviation anyway, and on the other hand, the problem of protecting the BTA is solved by installing active protection systems on the BTA, that is, radars, short-range and medium-range air-to-air missiles, while medium radius can be used today, but the neighbor needs to be redone so that they would have the function of shooting down anti-aircraft missiles.

Totally agree with you. Now the supreme thought is not clear: to turn the Airborne Forces into an elite, well-armed infantry, leave the role of the Airborne Forces the so-called special operations forces, but who should be assigned the tasks of reconnaissance and sabotage operations. This is to give to the former units of GRUGA. Incomprehensible castling policy. Isn’t it easier to form elite combined-arms units, and let the airborne forces leave parachute assault operations?

Yes, and the MTR fulfill what the Airborne Forces can never do. Here, just the Airborne Forces should take a position between: the fact that the MTR will NEVER be able to do, and the fact that ST NOW cannot do it. Accordingly, both the equipment and the organizational structure of the airborne forces should be adjusted to the voiced border. Part of what you need to do, I described above. And specific steps, decisions and changes need to be discussed specifically with the participation of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff of the Airborne Forces. And since here (in the comments thread) they are not and will not be, then it is simply useless for us to do this.

And something tells me that soon they will get rid of the T-72 and get the Octopus, and then the Boomerangs with the 125-mm gun ...

.. We were still joking and chatting when there was a roar, the wall of the burning house collapsed, and right out of the spinning fire, out of a cloud of sparks and smoke, floated out onto the street, holding the mammoth assault tank half a meter above the bridge. Having sailed to the middle of the street, he led the thrower, as if looking around, then removed the “air cushion” and with a rattle moved in our direction ... ” wink

In addition to the smut, mass landing does not cause anything from the command. Two options will be beaten or the equipment will be broken, or both. Never on business trips to the place of basing have we flown ... on the spot and the situation.

It is worrying about the rate of arrival of BMD-4, there it is necessary to give a regiment set a year, or better 2, otherwise battalion for 4 divisions and 5 brigades will be there until 2050 .. It is clear that the Volgograd Tractor was destroyed, but still, it was necessary to rearmament to think about how to organize production to the level of a regiment per year .. Who knows how they plan to expand production of BMD-4 in general ?? And what about adding 3 regiments in the division and 3 battalions to the brigades, + is there a 345 brigade near Voronezh?

I can’t look at BMD-4 without a shudder ... this powder keg of 100 mm shells with cardboard armor should also carry an assault force and go on the attack .. the same thing about Octopus ... And Nona why turned ??? Bring Nona back!

The state defense order for the current year 2018 again provides for the purchase of new and repair of existing weapons and equipment. According to the commander of the Airborne Forces, this year the troops will receive two battalion sets of BMD-4M and BTR-MDM vehicles.

There are very big doubts about this. sad
