State Department denies that new anti-Russian sanctions are timed to the presidential elections

The expansion of anti-Russian sanctions is not related to the presidential elections of the Russian Federation, reports RIA News State Department spokesman Heather Nauert.
At the briefing, Nauert was asked to comment on the statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry that the sanctions against a number of natural persons and organizations on Thursday were timed to the election of the Russian president.
This is just nonsense, this is nonsense. Sanctions are imposed for a long time; they are under investigation for a long time. We behind the scenes worked a lot on sanctions,
A spokesperson said.
They (Russians) make a lot of wild assumptions, and this is one of them,
added Nauert.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said yesterday that Washington had introduced new sanctions against Russia, taking into account the upcoming presidential elections to be held on Sunday. According to him, Moscow waited for March 16 sanctions (on the last working day before the elections), but "impatience prevailed in Washington."
The sanctions, in particular, were imposed on businessman Yevgeny Prigogine and the companies included in his Concorde holding, as well as against the FSB and the GRU. These restrictions mean that the assets of those involved in the blacklist will be frozen in the United States, and citizens and permanent residents of the United States will not be allowed to conduct any business with them.
