News from the president: an unmanned underwater vehicle with a nuclear power plant

68
On the first day of spring, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a message to the Federal Assembly. One of the main topics of the head of state’s speech was promising models of weapons and strategic equipment. Some information about a number of new projects was announced, and also demonstration videos were shown. Together with other bold developments of Russian scientists and designers, the president presented an unmanned underwater vehicle of a new type.

Talking about the Sarmat missile system and the so far an unnamed cruise missile with a nuclear power plant, Vladimir Putin touched on the subject of weapons for the naval fleet. He recalled that currently in the world are creating various unmanned systems for one purpose or another. At the same time, similar work is being carried out in our country. One of the samples of such equipment is proposed for use in the interests of national security.

According to the president, new unmanned underwater vehicles, characterized by high performance, have been developed in Russia. They are able to dive to a greater depth and move at a speed that is a multiple of the characteristics of surface ships, submarines, torpedoes, etc. In this case, the device has an intercontinental range. Devices have low noise, high maneuverability and "almost invulnerable to the enemy." Means to counter this technique at the moment are simply not available.

V. Putin also said that the new underwater Drones able to carry a variety of payloads. They can be equipped with ammunition with a nuclear or conventional warhead. This approach will increase the flexibility of application weapons and expand the range of targets hit. The devices can be used to attack carrier strike groups, coastal fortifications or infrastructure.

Announced the completion of work, allowing to implement all existing plans in the field of underwater unmanned vehicles. According to the president, in December, 2017, Russian scientists and designers completed the entire test cycle of a promising nuclear power plant for UAVs. Inspections of such products lasted for several years and led to the desired results.

Mysterious product is removed from the shop

It is noted that the promising power plant has a uniquely small size, but it is characterized by ultra-high energy performance. It takes a hundred times less space than the nuclear reactor of a modern submarine. At the same time such a product shows a higher capacity and faster 200 just goes to battle mode with the maximum possible power.

Completed tests open the way for new projects. The results of research and development work the last time make it possible to start the process of creating a fundamentally new type of strategic weapons. Such systems will be able to carry various combat equipment, including high-powered nuclear warheads.

V. Putin noted that a promising underwater unmanned vehicle designed for delivery to the armed forces has not yet been officially named. The task of choosing a name for a new weapon this time is entrusted to the general public. Anyone can use the special Internet service of the Ministry of Defense and offer their own version of the name.

The drone leaves the submarine carrier

As part of the last Message of the Federal Assembly, the President’s speech was accompanied by demonstrations of videos showing the basic principles of the work of advanced weapons. After a brief story about underwater drone-guns, a video clip titled “Ocean Multi-Purpose System with Unmanned Underwater Vehicles Equipped with a Nuclear Power Plant” was shown. With the help of computer graphics and documentary frames from the production, the authors of the video demonstrated how new weapons will be used.

First of all, the video demonstrates some work at one of the shipbuilding enterprises. This part of the video is completed with frames in which the diesel locomotive takes the platform with a container of variable circular cross-section out of the workshop. Apparently, in this "package" is a promising drone. Then follows the animated part of the video showing the operation of the complex.

The submarine, similar to the 949A missile cruiser, opened a special hatch behind the cabin fence, from which the unmanned vehicle came out. The launch of the second product, resembling a torpedo, was also carried out. Moving at a small height above the bottom, both vehicles set off towards their goals at different points of the conventional World Ocean. The capabilities of the unmanned system were shown on a conventional globe, not a bit dissimilar to our planet.

Similar product from a different angle

One of the products coming out in the area of finding the enemy aircraft carrier group, went on the ascent, and was struck by ships. The route of the second was much longer. It reached the enemy's port, approached one of its structures, and only then did it destroy the warhead. The submarine carrier, in turn, continued swimming.

In the video were shown two products of different appearance. The first, wherein a characteristic yellow color, have a size on the level of conventional torpedoes and a similar configuration of the chassis. At the same time, there were special features in the form of a protruding longitudinal casing on the upper part of the hull, a pair of internal water cannons for depth control and a specific steering wheel group. The aft body located X-shaped stabilizers, which is located between the column with its own propeller. The axes of the latter are placed at an angle, which facilitates maneuvering. In different parts of the hull of a yellow mini-submarine, it was possible to see one or another different areas, which may well turn out to be sensors or some technological equipment.

The second sample from the demo looks more like a torpedo. It has a cylindrical body of large elongation with a hemispherical head fairing. In the stern are vertical and horizontal steering wheels, as well as a propulsion propeller in the annular channel. Other noticeable features of such a device were absent. However, it was he who was shown as the carrier of the warhead. Two such unmanned systems hit the ship group and port.

Another version of the underwater drone

It should be recalled that for specialists and the public interested, a promising unmanned submersible with a nuclear power plant did not become a novelty. Back in the fall of 2015, a poster describing a certain project with the cipher “Status-6” allegedly hit the lens of the camera of one of the Russian TV channels. From this it followed that the Russian industry was working on a project of an unmanned submarine capable of carrying a warhead or its own weaponry. At the same time, such a submarine itself could become a payload for existing submarines.

A few days ago, shortly after Putin’s speech, it was announced that such a leak of data on a promising secret project was not accidental. Sheet with infographics specifically "framed" under the camera. Such a planned “leak” caused a stir among the public, and also became a cause for concern for officials from third countries. In the recent past, the Status-6 project has repeatedly become the topic of new discussions, and last Thursday the Russian president launched their next round.

According to the 2015 data of the year, the Status-6 project was developed by the Rubin Central Engineering Bureau. The task of the prospective apparatus was to deliver a special warhead to important objects of the enemy’s economy in the coastal zone. In addition, he had to create extensive radioactive contamination, making it impossible for the economic or military use of the area. These facts alone were able to attract attention, but some technical details were present on the poster.

Enemy ship hit

"Status-6" in the form shown was a nuclear-free submarine with a set of special equipment. The hull with a diameter of 5-7 m was supposed to provide the ability to dive to a depth of 1000 m. The range using a nuclear reactor was determined in 10 thousand km. The maximum travel speed reached 180-190 km / h. The product "Status-6" was proposed to operate in conjunction with submarine carriers. In this capacity, the ships Belgorod (project 09852) and Khabarovsk (09851) were considered. On their bottoms could appear devices for the transport of a rather large drone.

The poster indicated that in the 2018-19 years CKB MT "Rubin" was supposed to complete the design. Tests and refinement should be carried out before 2025. Further plans were unknown, because they did not fall into the frame.

The planned information leakage provoked active discussions of a new Russian project. Public heated debate about various features of the project, including adding to the known data for its estimates and assumptions. Quite a few new data of an estimated nature were made by experts in the field of armaments. Officials, however, did not replenish a certain amount of data. Moreover, it was stated that the “Status-6” information was not subject to publication.

One second before the destruction of the port

In 2016 and 2017, foreign publications, referring to their sources in intelligence structures, repeatedly reported on possible testing of the Russian product “Status-6”, and also supplemented the existing picture and clarified known data on its technical appearance. The Russian side, in turn, no longer mentioned the unusual project at the official level. This did not prevent the emergence of new estimates, but none of them was based on confirmed data.

Over time, the project "Status-6" has ceased to be the topic of the most active discussions, giving up this title to other relevant developments. However, 1 March 2018, the head of the Russian state told about the ocean multi-purpose system with unmanned underwater vehicles. The president announced the main features of the project, and also revealed some of the progress data. All this was accompanied by a demo video. It cannot be said that V. Putin revealed many new data, but a brief description of the promising program was enough to re-launch the wave of discussions.

Curiously, the new project was previously discussed under the title “Status-6”. Now it turned out that he does not have his own name. And they offered to solve this problem to the public: the Ministry of Defense accepts options for the names of the new apparatus.

Sensational shot with information about the project "Status-6"

The main and most interesting the news V. Putin should consider the data on the project for developing a nuclear power plant and the running characteristics obtained with its help. The President said that in December last year, the industry completed a multi-year test cycle of a compact but powerful power plant. It is alleged that this product is about 100 times smaller than the reactors of modern domestic submarines. It is easy to calculate that in this case, the power plant can fit in a reduced-size housing, which will save weight and increase power output. Another important feature of the reactor is its high “throttle response”. According to the president, to reach maximum power, a power plant requires 200 times less time than existing products. It seems that now we are talking about a real breakthrough in the field of nuclear energy.

Back in 2015, it became known that the underwater drone can develop high speed. Now V. Putin noted that this parameter will be several times higher than that of submarines. High travel speeds have known advantages, but can be associated with certain problems. First of all, at maximum speed, the device will be excessively noisy, which will facilitate its detection. However, it will be extremely difficult to catch up and destroy it with the use of existing anti-submarine weapons.

A separate topic of discussion at one time was the combat load of the apparatus. The 2015 poster of the year indicated that the Status-6 product could affect coastal infrastructure as well as create radioactively contaminated zones. According to various estimates, a thermonuclear charge with a power of up to 5-10 Mt could be inscribed into an existing case. However, there were more bold estimates, up to 80-100 Mt. In the discussions it was mentioned that in addition to the usual destructive factors of a nuclear explosion, a super-powerful charge should create an artificial tsunami up to several hundred meters high. According to the most courageous estimates, the wave from 100-megaton ammunition, even at distances more than 900 km from the coastline, will have a height of at least 2-3 m.

Warhead capacity in some megatons really makes the new UAV universal means of solving operational and strategic objectives. With it, with one blow, you can, at a minimum, disable an entire shipboard group or cause the most serious damage to coastal installations. Some of the objectives of the Status 6 project, which became known in the recent past, also allow the enemy to inflict long-term damage.

The tactical and technical characteristics and the power of the warhead allow you to roughly represent the scope of the unnamed system. In comparison with other equipment of the submarine fleet, the new unmanned vehicle is quite fast, but still cannot compare in speed with other means of delivery of nuclear weapons. Thus, it should be considered rather a means of retaliation. Not the fastest, but powerful and inevitable. However, it can also be used for the first strike, but in this case there are certain difficulties with the organization of the attack by all available means.

According to the latest data, the project of the ocean complex with a unmanned small-sized nuclear submarine has already passed the most important stage - the industry has tested a promising nuclear power plant. Now, design offices have the opportunity to prepare a complete system design and carry out all the necessary tests. According to the results of these works, over the next few years, Russia's strategic nuclear forces will be able to get a fundamentally new deterrent.

I invite participants to discuss a couple of questions:
          1. How is the connection with the "status-6" submerged.

Salty sea water, being an electrolyte, suppresses radio signals. The only possible option is communications on superlong waves (there are 2 systems - the captured German Goliath in the Kstovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the 43 communication node of the Navy in Belarus - Vileyka).

At the bottom of the antenna, you can distinguish the shape of a car

The view of the "Goliath" is amazing: The transmitting VLF antenna consists of three umbrella parts mounted around three central pillars with a height of 210 meters; the corners of the antenna are fixed on fifteen lattice masts with a height of 170 meters. Each antenna canvas, in turn, consists of six regular triangles with a side of 400 m and is a system of steel cables in a movable aluminum sheath. The antenna web tension is produced by 7-tonnes of counterweights.

dependence of the depth of penetration of radio waves into the water column on their frequency
Maximum transmitter power is 1,8 Megawatts. The operating range of 15 is 60 kHz, the wavelength of 5 is 20 kilometers. The data transfer rate is up to 300 bps.

Disadvantages: even these unique systems unable to transmit signals to a depth of more than 30 meters, 2 problem - low data transfer rate, in fact - only key commands: ascend and receive an important message via satellite connection

          2. The question is the place of the "status-6" in the nuclear triad. The mini-submarine will be able to crawl to the United States only a week after the end of the nuclear war. As a defensive deterrent weapon, it is NOT suitable for retaliation. Also, as it is not suitable for defeating aircraft carrier groups - who the hell will be able to predict where in a week it will turn out to be an aircraft carrier ??

The only use case is to issue a “status” at sea a few days before the alleged “X” day, a weapon of nuclear terrorists?

Created at the end of the 1970-ies on the basis of the anti-submarine aircraft Tu-142 (which, in turn, is a modification of the strategic bomber T-95), the “Eagle” differs from its ancestor in the absence of search equipment - instead of a reel with a towed 8600-meter antenna VLF radio transmitter "Fregat". In addition to the super-long-wave station, on board the Tu-142MR there is a set of communications equipment for working in the usual radio wave bands (while the aircraft is capable of performing the functions of a powerful HF repeater even without lifting into the air).

It is known that as of the beginning of 2000-s, several machines of this type were still listed as part of the 3-X squadron of the 568-gv. mixed aviation regiment aviation Pacific Fleet.

The use of repeater planes is nothing more than a forced (reserve) half-measure - in the event of a real conflict, the Tu-142MR can be easily intercepted by enemy aircraft, moreover, the airplane circling in a certain square unmasks the submarine and clearly indicates to the enemy the position of the submarine.

// How is the connection with the "status-6" in the underwater position. //
And how do regular submarines keep in touch?
Sub-float or release a floating buoy on a cable. Communication on ordinary waves.

// As a defensive deterrent, a retaliatory strike is NOT good. Also, how unsuitable for defeating aircraft carrier groups - who the hell can predict where the aircraft carrier will be in a week ?? //
Why is this not suitable for a retaliatory strike !!? Just because of the low speed and application only on the coastal infrastructure, this product can be used only in response. What is the use of a preventive strike?
Then why can't you hit an aircraft carrier?
If an aircraft carrier is detected, coordinates are given for interception and an indication to contact each hour (to obtain new aircraft carrier coordinates). When the unit comes close, on-board detection tools turn on. Further, the device acts like an ordinary torpedo (though like an unintercepted torpedo with a heavy-duty warhead).

A nuclear power plant will heat air through a heat exchanger and it will serve as the working fluid. If you mean it too, but with water (in steam and used as a jet stream) - what will happen to the heat exchanger. It will be covered with salt almost instantly. and hello, the seabed .. And in the Kyrgyz Republic, this is generally not even crazy. The cadmium melting temperature (used as a neutron absorber in the NR) is -321 C. How will you remove heat from the reactor so that it does not heat above 300 degrees. And what temperature will be on the heat exchanger. And most importantly, to what temperature and for how short a time does the passing air need to be heated so that due to its thermal expansion it is possible to obtain a jet stream capable of imparting Raman radiation at least for a minute. speed. About submarines, I modestly keep silent.

Development indicates a deep crisis. After all, about the "dirty" radioactive

Do you think American nuclear power plants will survive in the event of war? This is an excellent target for Russian strategic nuclear forces, especially in densely populated states. Status-6 is an underwater analogue of the Perimeter system, which will be used in the event of an attack on Russia. What bothers you? If the west begins to kill the Russians, then we will respond with the same coin - we will burn them to the ground and litter the territory for centuries to come.

Therefore, these "Chernobyl-marine" radioactive prodigies look completely wild.

Intercepting a high-speed underwater drone is much more difficult than a missile defense. 70% of the surface of the ball is water, and under water, radar is useless. The object is quite small, so it is almost impossible to detect it on a low-noise move, and it will pick up maximum speed when attacking a target when there is no time to stop it. Even if the “Status” is discovered at great depths, it will have to be destroyed by nuclear depth charges, and the course depth may well be more than 1 km.

In the coastal zone, it can still be useful, but in the vast expanses of the ocean he is unlikely to find the Status-1, which is slowly going at a depth of 6 km. The average depth of the ocean is about 4 km, so I won’t be surprised if the real depth of immersion of this unit is much more than the declared. At such depths, there will simply be nothing to detect it (DMA can only detect a target directly below it).

States capable of creating “sophisticated and precise weapons” also use them for terrorist acts. The United States is not threatening anyone, but the United States is bombing whatever it sees fit around the world in accordance with the standards they have developed.
Yes, the development of different countries and regions of the world goes unevenly, there are lagging countries that are “holding back". The pathos of your speech is clear: killing people with high-tech weapons is proposed to be considered correct and morally justified, and killing people with morally obsolete or "dirty" weapons is wrong and immoral. It remains to force the other side to agree with this.

This is not true. Modern hydrogen bombs in the sense of radioactive contamination of the area - a relatively clean weapon. Not at all like the Hiroshima bomb. And hundreds of times smaller than a fire or explosion in a nuclear reactor of a nuclear power plant or nuclear submarine.
Millions of people will die in aerial bombings of hydrogen bombs over cities as a result of a possible blast wave and related fires.

I have a question of a different nature, is it possible to develop 200 km / h on screws? And judging by the animated pictures, the shape of the hull is not like a barrage.

Well, you ask such stupid questions. The President said that he could - that means he could. He also said that this boat is not only high-speed, but also low-noise. This means a “flurry” at a speed of 200 km / h and with a jet engine rumbles so that it can be heard from where, but the target simply does not have time to leave. And here at 200 km / h - low noise and inconspicuous.

Now, regarding the photos from the presidential presentation in an article by Cyril

    1. The unmanned vehicle leaves the carrier and its photograph from a different angle

Asking for a name for what already has a name is very fresh. The photograph is nothing more than an autonomous uninhabited underwater vehicle, known as the Harpsichord-2R-PM. The purpose is peak-to-peak operations and the study of the seabed.

TTX of this unit is as follows
    Length - 6,5 meters
    Diameter - about 1 meter
    Weight - about 3,7 tons
Immersion depth - up to 6000 meters
    Battery range - 50 kilometers, i.e. almost 27 miles
    Speed - up to 1,5 m / s, i.e. 2,9 knots or 5,4 km / h

was before this, "Harpsichord-1P" and "Harpsichord-2P". I did not find “Harpsichord-2P” photographs, maybe he repeats “Harpsichord-2P-PM”, but “Harpsichord-1P” looks as follows

Now for the "Status-6" and its TTX in the article.
To begin with, the dimensions indicated in the article do not correspond to what was “before”. On the famous "informational stuffing" on TV, the length of this unit was 24 meters, a diameter of 1,6 meters, a compartment with a charge of 6,5 meters. Speed 185, range 10000, depth - 1000 km. Opportunities and impossibilities to achieve controlled movement with the required accuracy have already been repeatedly written. As it has been written many times about how such a survey of meetings takes place. I no longer mention how documents with a signature stamp, at least “Top Secret”, look like.

According to the president, new unmanned underwater vehicles, characterized by high performance, have been developed in Russia.

To be honest, I’m not more interested in the combat capabilities of the devices (they probably don’t care), and who will respond when:
    1. The device is entangled in fishing nets.
    2. The apparatus will collide with a civilian ship or warship (and not a friendly state).
At the same time, this is all in peacetime.
Just do not say that the unit will be used only in wartime. Nobody canceled practical exercises, and we do not know the list of their tasks.

    1. The same can be asked about every other submarine. There is no fundamental difference. And no ribovolny networks or civilian vessels do not interfere with all fleets acquires submarines. For example, a North Korean submarine landed in shallow water off the enemy shore, another submarine drowned a South Korean corvette and then nothing fatal happened.
    2. Communication is also not a problem. You can raise the antenna on the surface once or twice a day for several minutes and take the necessary information.

Actually, the situation resembles a card game. Having a good card in hand, the player will certainly increase the bet, then the partners, if they calculate it, simply fold, in order to lose less. If they suspect a bluff, then they go to raise the bet, then the loss is much greater. If bluffing takes place, then the already bluffing player loses. Usually, if players play long enough, then they develop a fairly accurate understanding of what the opposing side is capable of. So we'll see. Only the size of the bet in this game is depressing. True, by analogy with wildlife, one can hope for the best. After all, competing individuals still try to scare at first, and basically, they achieve their goal. If this number does not work, then of course, the struggle begins to inflict unacceptable damage, or ... But the trouble is, man is the king, so to speak of nature and how he will act, it is difficult to say.
In addition, I believe that the adversary can reason less aggressively, but pragmatically. Suppose we have such a weapon, then we must prepare a counter-weapon, the Russians will not be the first to attack (they know this axiom and use it with success), so that time suffers. Either there is no such weapon, but it may appear, it’s more complicated here, but again the Russians will not attack, then either again, countermeasures, or they themselves will attack, but here nuclear weapons seem to interfere. Problems pancake at the adversary: You’ll go straight .., Go right ...
Here we asked above whether a submarine can move at a stated speed. D * Alamber answered this question with his paradox, saying that an ideally streamlined body moving in a stream of a homogeneous incompressible medium has zero resistance (shape). There is friction resistance, of course there are questions. Therefore, modern submarines have a speed higher than surface ships. I believe that with a certain ratio of the power of the EU and the area of the wetted surface of the apparatus, the declared speeds can be achieved. (I do not affirm, but I suppose).
It also seems to me that as opposing systems, the most promising will be systems on the ekranoplane platform, as in other carriers of these weapons, if you need increased efficiency in their use.
