Judgment Day. Fracture and Completion. Part of 1

68

When the Doomsday War began, both the US and the USSR were not in a hurry with the cease-fire efforts. Unlike the events of the Six-Day War 1967 of the year, when in a few days the UN decided to cease fire, this time there was no such diplomatic agility. I must say that Israeli Foreign Minister Aba Eban has been on constant telephone contact with US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger since October 7.

The question of a cease-fire they discussed almost the very beginning of the war. But after all, they go to a cease-fire only when both belligerents understand that this is beneficial to them. And on October 7, 1973, nobody was interested in the cease-fire. It was humiliating for the Israelis to stop fire when their lines of defense were broken, and the enemy was on their territory, the Arabs were engulfed by the fervor of the offensive and the joy of the first victories and did not even think about a cease-fire. On the Soviet side, the Arabs declared then, at the beginning of the war, that they would agree to a cease-fire only when Israel left the entire Sinai Peninsula, the Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip, Judea, Samaria and East Jerusalem. It is clear that in Israel they could not agree.

On Tuesday, October 9, when the situation of Israel was worse than ever, Eban had to take the rap at the UN at a Security Council meeting.

The Arabs have managed to file a complaint with the UN that Israel is bombing Damascus, Ismailia and Port Said. Here, usually restrained Eban broke through: “You were the first to attack us and you loudly complain that Israel is defending itself! What are you, really ... ?! ”

The USSR, of course, supported its proteges and put all the responsibility on Israel.

Despite the scope and dynamism of the fighting in the Sinai Peninsula, the most dramatic events occurred at the same time on the Syrian front. Ultimately, the fate of Israel in the early days of the war was decided precisely on the Golan Heights. To understand the validity of this statement, just look at the map of Israel.

Between its territory and the Egyptian troops in 1973 lay Sinai - 200 km of desert. Directly adjacent to Sinai is the Negev Desert - an almost uninhabited territory of Israel. The Syrians, having broken through the IDF's defense in the Golan Heights and forcing the Jordan River, fell directly into Galilee - densely populated areas in northern Israel. From Golan Heights to the sea - just 50 km!

On the night of October 9, against the remnants of the 7 Armored Brigade "Sa'ar Mi-Golan", which was commanded by Avigdor, the Ben-Gal Syrian Command abandoned the 3 Armored and 7 Infantry Divisions, as well as the Republican Guard, the elite of the Syrian Army .
Avigdor Ben-Gal
The main attack of the T-55 and T-62 Republican Guard tanks fell on the 77 armored battalion "Oz", in which only 6 tanks remained. By noon, 9 October, the Syrians finally managed to capture several of the dominant heights, pushing a handful of Israeli tanks left with almost no ammunition. The battle actually broke up into a mass of uncontrollable and uncontrolled command of one-on-one fights, in which crew training and the strength of their nerves played a decisive role. And that, and the other Syrians is clearly not enough. Evidence of this was the 13 surprise attack of the remaining 188 tanks of the Barak (Lightning) tank brigade in the flank of the Syrians.

It was commanded by Amos Katz, who replaced the death of Yitzhak Ben-Shoham, who died on the eve.

Very quickly, they hit 30 Syrian tanks and this psychologically turned the tide of battle in their favor. An hour after joining the fire duel of the 188 tank brigade, the Arabs began to withdraw. The Syrian command ordered the transition to defense.

The turning point in the war on the Syrian front came when David Elazar, the chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, ordered all reinforcements to be sent to the Golan Heights, and not to divide them into two fronts. He spurred a message about the Iraqi division approaching the Syrian front in 230 tanks and 16 thousand people. (according to other sources - 350 tanks and 18 of thousands of soldiers) The Syrians needed to be sorted out before the Iraqis approached. The completed 146 armored division of Brigadier General Moshe Peled launched a slow attack in the southern sector, gradually ousting the Syrians from the Israeli part of Golan. By the morning of October 11, the 240-I armored division of Major General Dan Laner was able to fully engage in battles and, while the 36-I tank-motorized infantry division, commanded by Brigadier General Rafael Eitan in the north, held up stubborn defenses, two Israeli divisions in the south on the south, in the south, on the south, in the south, held a stubborn defense, two army divisions in the south on the south, in the south, held a stubborn defense, in the south, they were on the south, in the south of the army, Raphael Eitan Syrians back. October 12 division Dana Lanera bypassed Tel-Masharu and freed Nasedzh. Dan Laner ordered to establish on the flank contact with the 9 th Oto motorized rifle brigade, commanded by Colonel Mordechai Ben-Porat, who had reached Tel el-Mal by halfway to Knacker. The Syrians began a disorderly retreat. Until the end of the war was still far away, but the turn on the Syrian front has already arrived. The fighting was already on the Syrian territory, the IDF troops were moving towards Damascus.

To help the crumbling Syrian front, the Jordanian king gallantly sent there his elite 40 Tank Brigade. There was a tank battle, which ended in defeat for the Jordanians. Understanding all the national difficulties of the Jordanian king, the Israeli media did not say a word about the participation of the Jordanian troops in the war and their defeat on the Syrian front.

Parts of the 3 of the Iraqi tank division (mainly T-55 tanks) arrived in Syria on October 10 – 11 and joined the battle on October 12 in 12. From the march, inexperienced Iraqi tankers attacked the 9 and 679 tanks of the Israel Defense Forces. (The 679 Armored Brigade was commanded by Colonel Uri Or) Almost immediately, the 200 of the Iraqi T-54 and T-55 tanks fell under the aimed fire of the Centurion and Shermans with 105-mm guns. The Iraqi division was virtually destroyed: the losses amounted to 80 (according to other sources - even 120) of combat vehicles.

(Interestingly, on the same day, October 12 1973, Sadat rejected the USSR Council - to seek a ceasefire and continued to reject this advice until the IDF tanks appeared on October 10, 19 km from Cairo.)

Dayan, who once again visited the Golan during the offensive, advised Eitan and Lener to bring the troops to the gunshot to Damascus, and for himself concluded that it was possible to bear the brunt of Egypt. Be that as it may, the Iraqis managed to delay the offensive and bring down the attacking rush of the Israelis. The advancing troops were tired, fuel and ammunition were running out. The command of the Israel Defense Forces refused to assault Damascus. Damascus was saved. Israeli troops went over to the defenses. At the front there was a lull until October October 16.

Between 17 and 22 in October, the remnants of the 1 Syrian and 3 Iraqi Panzer divisions made lingering attempts to attack Israeli positions several times. The exception was the seven-hour battle of October 20, when 120 tanks took part in the attack.

Back in the midst of the battles of the Doomsday War, Syria turned to Cuba for help. The Cuban leadership sent 800 tankers to Syria. They traveled to Damascus incognito, through the third countries of Europe and the Middle East. They did not have time to take part in the active phase of the war.

On the Egyptian front, everything was still very vague. In order to divert part of the Israeli troops from the Syrian front, Sadat decides to redeploy the 4 and 21 armored divisions to the east coast, leaving one armored brigade as a strategic reserve on the west coast. Thus it was supposed to break through the Israeli line of defense. This step was a mistake that led to grave consequences.

The Egyptian troops of October 13 launched an offensive, and on Sunday, October 14, a massive tank battle took place, in which about 2000 tanks took part. 1200 Egyptian tanks (not counting motorized infantry armored vehicles) opposed Israeli 800 units. It is believed that by the number of cars this battle is the largest tank battle after 1943. Then on the Kursk Bulge 2700 Germans fought against the Soviet 3000 tanks. In the battle of El Alamein in 1942, "only" 1600 of German, English and Italian tanks took part.

And so, four armored and one mechanized brigade of Egyptians went on the offensive in four directions. Objective: to implement a political decision of President Sadat - to save the Syrian troops fighting in the Golan Heights from defeat. (Already familiar to us from a previous publication, Lieutenant-General Saad Al-Shazli called this decision a "blunder No. XXUMX", my note) Starting the offensive, Egyptian troops came out from under the cover of stationary air defense missile systems on the western bank of the channel. There was nothing to organize the air defense of the attacking units - the export version of the Soviet mobile air defense system “Kub” was purchased in small quantities in 1 year. The massive fire of Israel’s disguised tanks and the high density of anti-tank installations with close air support led to the loss of 1973 tanks, more than in all the days of the war. The Israelis repelled the offensive. General Abraham (Albert) Mandler was killed in this battle by the explosion of a projectile.
The Egyptians lost, according to various sources 250 - 264 tank against 10 - 40 Israeli and lost the battle.

It was then that the winged expression of David Elazar was born: “Golda, everything will be fine. We are again, and they are again! ”

The scope of this battle gave the Israelis confidence that the 500 reserve tanks, which used to be on the western, Egyptian, bank of the channel now also turned out to be in Sinai. So, Israeli strategists reasoned, the Egyptian rear was left without protection. To attack, as in 1956 or 1967, the Israelis did not have the strength throughout Sinai, and the war had to be won. I needed a feint. What was needed was not another wall-to-wall brawl, but a well-planned, daring operation. Planned it long before the war, Arik Sharon. Thinking about possible future wars, he outlined on the shore of the Suez Canal a convenient place to cross to the west, African, shore. Anything can happen in the future? This place was located at the upper (northern) tip of the Great Salt Lake, where the water space again took the form of a channel. Sharon leveled in advance a place on the coast for a tank park, led the roads and made a passage to the water in the steep bank of the canal. An hour struck him in the evening of October 14.

The permission of the command of Sharon as the commander of the central sector to force the channel came in 19: 00. Since the mobilization was already over and all the prescribed units were sent to the front, two divisions decided to throw at once into the breakthrough “to Africa” - Sharon and Abraham Adan, whom friends usually called Bren.

Sharon’s place was otherwise called the Chinese farm in memory of some Japanese scientists who either studied agriculture in this dead place, or taught the local fellahs to this, and so abandoned their equipment. In some places there were hieroglyphs stuffed under the stencil, and there was no time to distinguish Japanese from Chinese. It was located almost at the junction of the Second and Third Egyptian armies, poorly covered by the 21 armored division. The plan was as follows: Sharon’s division breaks through to the water, “spreads” the two armies of Egyptians and holds the corridor along which the Bren Adan division rushes to the African coast, having a landing brigade commanded by Brigadier General Mata of Denmark. Part of Sharon’s division is also shipped to the Egyptian coast, and part continues to keep the corridor and provide defense of the crossing point. IDF troops, which will cross over to the African coast, are developing an offensive in both directions from the crossing along the canal bank, as well as moving inland to Cairo. Those troops that will go to the north, will capture Ismailia, those who will go to the south, will go to the rear of the Third Army of the enemy. Well, and those who go straight, will threaten the capital of the country. This should make the Egyptians flinch, mix, scare and surrender.

This whole plan was not a personal initiative of Sharon, as they sometimes write. The operation was discussed jointly by Dayan, Elazar, Bar-Lev, Sharon, Gonen and Adan.

Before the water managed to get through extremely easily. At one in the morning of October 16, the 200 paratroopers of the Mata Brigade swam in rubber boats on the west bank. They quickly swam across the channel, took up positions on the enemy shore, but the enemies themselves were not visible. Having provided a bridgehead, they let know that it was possible to build bridges for tanks and equipment. The troops began to pull closer to the water, and engineers began to build a bridge, but then the Egyptians became alarmed and the crossing point on the Israeli coast was subjected to very heavy shelling. At the same time, units of both Egyptian armies tried to close up and squeeze the Israelis from the water. A very intense battle broke out around the Chinese farm.

It was impossible to even think about any bridges. However, here, according to Saad al-Shazli, a “gross error number XXUMX” was made: the categorical refusal of President Sadat and Defense Minister Ismail to allow the withdrawal of the 2 and 4 armored divisions to the west bank, as well as the 21 brigade assigned 21-th division. This was undesirable for political reasons, since the next morning the Minister of Defense and the President were to be at the National Assembly Session, and the President did not want the slightest suspicion of weakness to darken the triumph. When the next morning, the first reports began to be received on the breakthrough of enemy tanks to the west coast in the vicinity of Deversoire, the ban on the withdrawal of forces from Sinai continued to operate. Instead, it was proposed to counterattack the place where the enemy was crossing the channel.

It is the morning of October 16. The first rays of the sun lit up the exciting endless African landscape and frankly lit 200 Israelis, sitting like roosters on a roost, on another side of the canal and without any bridge. The IDF paratroopers could, of course, take the fight and on a flat table, but who wants to be a suicide? One Egyptian bombing, one Egyptian shelling - that's all. Seasoned guys boiled their tea and sat down to wait, what will happen next. Moisei was not at hand, as luck would have it, and the only thing Sharon could do was to launch certain ferries into the water of the canal that could transport the tanks. Slowly, he transported 30 tanks in this way to aid the paratroopers.
It quickly became clear that if a real battle was taking place on the Sinai Canal (Sharon was not dangerously wounded in the head that day), then there was simply no Egyptian troops on the African coast. In order not to sit idle while waiting for bridges, the tanks that had crossed over went to smash the anti-aircraft missile systems that covered the Egyptian crossings. They destroyed several complexes, thus making a breach in the anti-aircraft defense of the channel. This immediately took advantage of the pilots, who were now able to beat the Egyptian bridges and troops.

The Egyptians viewed the crossing of the Jews and did not pay attention to the raid of tanks along the western bank of the canal. They were strongly annoyed by the forces of the IDF, located near the water at Sinai, between their forces. The pressure on the Israeli corridor increased. The whole day of October 16 was fighting around the crossing point. The generals again gathered to decide how to proceed. Bar-Lev agreed to ship several more tanks to mainland Egypt by ferry, but he did not know what to do next. Dayan decided to go to Africa to figure it out on the spot. He swam with Sharon to the west bank and examined the positions. Palm trees, eucalyptus trees, cultivated soil and not a single Egyptian soldier around. Seven tanks guarded the bridgehead, and the rest went ahead to beat the enemy, if caught. The generals returned to the Sinai coast. The sand, the stones, the smoking machines and the incessant attacks of the Egyptians everywhere. Heavy bulldozers pushed the broken wrecks of cars off the road to let the tanks approach the water.

Bridge engineers have guided. About him should tell a special deal. The crossing was first carried out on rafts, then - on separate pontoons, then - with the help of a pontoon bridge, built of redeemed rubble bought up in France. The Americans, at one time, refused Israel to supply such equipment, so we had to remember the past and do it on our own. Such extraordinary means as the bridge invented by David Laskov — unsinkable, fully prepared and pre-assembled were put into operation.

The idea was to make the construction of a bridge under fire as easy as possible. The bridge had to be assembled in advance at a safe distance, rolled up to the channel on metal rollers / floats (length 9 m, diameter 1.8 m, inside polyurethane foam, weight 5 tons), push ... and the matter is practically with a hat. The reverse side, of course, was the complexity of transporting the monstrous design: forcing a canal, a length of approximately 200 m was required, which gave a weight of 700 tons. The bridge should be towed by tanks, slowly (up to 10 km / h) and straightforwardly (since changing the course of this thing is a whole story). As an option, it was supposed to drag in three or four pieces, and finally assemble at the finish line. This kind of operation was never planned, they were never worked out, the bridge was supposed to be dragged no more than one or two kilometers away - but this was done.

In reality, the assembly of the bridge began about 20 km east of the canal, and the base was raided aviation Egyptians, three cylinders were damaged. The work was completed on October 12. The 7th brigade was on the Syrian front, and the role of tractors went to the tanks of the 257th battalion of the 421st reserve brigade. For some reason, they decided to carry the bridge from the very beginning in one piece. Five tanks were harnessed to the front, two to the right and left, and one to the rear - to use the brake.

The crews, in the most literal sense, fell asleep from fatigue, but in the end the process started, and the device (immediately called a “dinosaur”) successfully overcame the training segment of three kilometers. Then the “dinosaur” was disguised and waited.

The move resumed on October 15 on 20: 30. Two hours were allocated for the transportation of the bridge and subsequent guidance, but the deadline immediately went to. Then an order from above to stop and wait, then traffic jams, then terrain (dunes, funnels, etc.). To successfully overcome the dunes, the number of tanks was brought to the 18, including the "tank skimmers" that pushed the structure from behind.

The cables were periodically torn ... The installed bridge received the nickname "Johnny Bridge" in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Aaron "Johnny" Tan, an engineering officer in the southern district who died during transportation.

In general, the Israeli troops showed unprecedented speed of adaptation to the new conditions of battle. Tactical techniques were invented on the move, which were not dreamed of by suppliers and manufacturers of Israeli weapons. For example, extending long-range 175-mm American guns from the rear positions to the leading edge (which they should never do, but they turned out to be very useful for suppressing heavy anti-aircraft missile bases), building field fortifications from the so-called "gabions" - metal nets, where without cement poured the improvised stone, and thus built the necessary facilities (that is, very quickly built anything, and anywhere), which broke all efficiency records of the activities of field repair shops that were restored during the night under itye day tanks - all of it paid off.

The tanks of the division of Adana with the battle broke through to the crossing and rushed to the west bank. Further events on the two shores developed in absolutely different ways. Around the Chinese farm was such a meat grinder that Sharon received an order from people from Africa to withdraw and retreat from the water. It seemed to Gonen that Sharon’s troops at the crossing point were surrounded and pressed to the water. Sharon, being in battle, saw that he was not surrounded and still holds a corridor through which troops continue to break through to Africa, fuel for tanks and ammunition. But it was given to him with tremendous tension. There was another conflict between Sharon and his superiors. Then they wrote a lot that Sharon had the mindset of a paratrooper, who was used to fighting in the environment, and Gonen had a tanker mindset, always dependent on the rear base, and it was difficult for them to understand each other. After long altercations, Sharon did not withdraw the troops from the African part of Egypt. On the contrary, more and more reinforcements were moving to Africa. Israeli tanks crushed missile systems, approached Ismailia and, most importantly, cut the road along which supplies to the Third Army, fighting at Sinai. Thus, the Israelis seized a bridgehead on the west bank of the Suez Canal and secured a route to Cairo for their tanks.

Lieutenant General Saad Al-Shazli:

“I am ashamed to talk about the composition of our forces 17 October. We had 20 infantry and eight armored brigades, grouped into five infantry and two armored divisions. Each infantry division consisted of four tank battalions, one battalion of infantry fighting vehicles, a division of ATRA, one anti-tank battalion, nine artillery batteries (124 tank, 36 Baby installations, 40 BMP, 36 anti 85 mm guns, 90 recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 107 mm , 535 RPGs, 72 field artillery guns, which can also be used as anti-tank guns. While in well-fortified positions with such weapons, the infantry division could repel the attack of forces up to three armored brigades. Nevertheless, we strengthened and each 36 infantry division with additional anti-tank systems, 21 self-propelled anti-tank gun SU-100 and the whole armored brigade. parts immediately after that, but a political decision not to withdraw a single soldier and not a single unit of equipment from Sinai kept these tanks there. Thus, in the morning of October 17, eight armored brigades at the front, somewhat battered in hostilities, were positioned as follows:

- four armored brigades distributed between our 18 bridgeheads. The 2, 7, and 19 divisions were practically inactive;

- one armored brigade led an offensive north of the bridgehead of the Third Army;

- Two armored brigades of the 21 Division, which suffered losses and exhausted by three-day, almost continuous battles, launched an offensive to the south;

- more than 16 km to the west of the channel, one armored brigade cruised along the front of almost 80 km to prevent a new breakthrough of the enemy.

In the combat zone, less than 40 percent of our resources were concentrated. For the battle at Deversuar, we assembled three armored brigades and one infantry brigade against enemy forces in six armored brigades and two infantry brigades — that is, his forces exceeded ours by half, and our offensive plan could only worsen our chances even more. It was a blunder No. 3. On October 17, the Battle of Deversuaire ended in its intended manner.

Step 1. Our offensive in three directions should have begun simultaneously. But, as is usually the case in such cases, everything was successful in the plans, but in practice the synchronization of actions was broken. Each offensive group had to lead the battle alone. Our 116 Infantry Division broke through to the east, to the enemy’s foothold. She managed to destroy several enemy tanks. But when our troops were already at a distance of less than 1,5 km from the canal, they came under heavy enemy fire. Losses grew, and the brigade was forced to retreat.

Step 2. Moving south on the opposite bank, the 21 Division was able to cut the main line of approach of the enemy forces to Deversouar from the east, but she could not move further.

Step 3. Moving north, the 25-I brigade was completely destroyed. The enemy division, consisting of three armored brigades, awaiting the opening of a bridge in 16 km to the east, moved towards our lonely brigade, arranging a classic ambush for it. One brigade blocked our way of approach. The second took the position to our right. The third made a flank round to surround our brigade from the rear. When, moving to the north, our tanks entered the zone of continuous defeat, they attacked them from three sides and pressed them to the lakes from the fourth side. When night fell, only a few surviving tanks were able to retreat back to the bridgehead of the Third Army. Technique and life was wasted. (During the 4 hours, the 86 was knocked out of the 96 T-62 tanks in the fire bag. - Auth. Note). "

The turning point finally occurred on October 19, when it came to the Egyptians that the Third Army was surrounded, and Israeli tanks were in 100 km from Cairo ...

Although Saad al-Shazli believed that even then something could have been saved if it were not for the president’s refusal to withdraw four Egyptian armored brigades from the east bank (two of the 16 division, one of the 2 and th). On the east bank, the Egyptians had more strength than they needed, and on the west bank, too little to reflect the very real threat of the encirclement of the Second and Third armies. As a result, the Third Army (19 45 soldiers and 000 tanks) was surrounded, cut off from the supply bases and its fate was decided by the Israelis and American diplomats. Subsequently, the encircled Third Army became Israel’s political trump card. For the sake of the salvation of its surrounded soldiers, Egypt will have to make very painful concessions ...

The ending should ...

I focus on conversations (conversations) with Soviet retired officers - the so-called. "observers" from Egypt in the "Doomsday War": - Israel could not have resisted the combined forces of Egypt, Jordan and Iraq, if not for blocking the "decisions" of the UN, the "strong protests" of US diplomats and the small but numerous "sanctions" those of the United States, England, Saud - already then actively used by the "protectors" of Israel. Well, the Israeli attacks against the civilian population played a role - both on the territory of the enemy, and provocative, on the territory of Israel itself ... Did not know? Well, of course - why focus on this ...
And in the "tank contingent" of Iraq - by the way ... - there were Iraqi officers studying in the USSR ... well, and in secret - our purely dark-skinned under the guise of Arabs were there too; They talked with them - participated, awarded, and have injuries ...

I have all the materials on the "UN decisions" and about them, as well as other political romp around the described events, I will tell in the next - the last part of the series. But about the "decisive protests" of US diplomats and small, but numerous "sanctions" of the same USA, England, Saud - already then actively used by the "protectors" of Israel (?!), especially about the Israeli attacks against the civilian population - both on the enemy’s territory and provocative ones, on the territory of Israel itself - sharpen, please.

That's for sure. but for a different reason. Fortitude they never had. The Arabs were professionally well trained.

But they did not have fighting spirit and stamina.
But the Jews always had a good time with this, and even the adventure with forcing (there weren’t any chances there) passed, and they stood up in the Golan primarily because of their stamina.

Arabs at the genetic level already felt, always expected that Jews would smear them, and panic fell from the slightest serious threat.

Thanks to the author for a logically consistent and objective selection of facts that allow, figuratively speaking, in 3d mode to restore the epic events of the Doomsday War. "
As for me, the "October War" - not only became a test of the strength of the entire structure of our state, but also the most outstanding in Jewish history. Having missed the first powerful blow of the enemy, which has absolute superiority in manpower and equipment, waging a war on two fronts, Israel first restrained the attack, and then completely defeated the enemy. Do not forget that this time Israel was opposed in addition to Egypt, Syria and Jordan: Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, SA, UAE. Even Uganda and Pakistan even sent troops. Jews taught everyone a lesson. And it seems he was assimilated. In any case, the October war, which is almost half a century, was the last large-scale conventional war against Israel. The tiny territory, incomparable with the Arab resource base, forced Israel to implement the concept of a blitzkrieg. In 1973, everything was different. Israel demonstrated miracles in defense, maneuver warfare and frontal battles. Reading Shazli, forced to pay tribute to the Israeli strategists who set up the Egyptian tanks "classic trap", I would like to clarify. Not all of them were shot down by Israeli tankers. Apparently, the Egyptian was embarrassed to admit that the Jews drove the Egyptian tank division, like rabbits on a hunt, into their own minefields, where they ended without starting their battle path. I agree with the Israeli publicist Vladimir Frommer, who noted that in any country the result achieved by Israel would be unconditionally recognized as outstanding. In ancient Rome, Frommer further writes, Elazar would have been triumphant. And he continues "in any country, but not in Israel." But this is a completely different story. Once again, sincere thanks to the author.

On the side of Egypt and Syria, the main enemies of Israel in this war, also came forward [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]:

Algeria sent squadrons of fighters and bombers, brigades of soldiers and tanks.
    Jordan Expeditionary Force (armored brigade).
    Iraq sent 30 thousand soldiers, 500 tanks and 700 armored personnel carriers, 54 guns, 73 aircraft (18 MiG-21, 7 MiG-17, 32 Su-7 and 16 Hawker Hunter).
Cuba sent about 3 thousand soldiers, including tank crews.
Kuwait financial assistance, small military contingents.
Libya financial assistance ($ 1 billion) and Mirage fighters.
Morocco sent 3 brigades, including a mechanized brigade.
    Pakistan sent 16 pilots.
Palestinians / PLO sent two “special purpose” brigades.
Saudi Arabia financial assistance, sent an armored brigade.
USSR weapons, aircraft (to Syria - 125 ANT-12 aircraft, to Egypt - 42 ANT-12 and 16 ANT-22, to Iraq - 17 ANT-12), equipment, sent Soviet pilots, which on the MiG-25 carried out aerial reconnaissance and fleet to supply Egypt and Syria. Also, the USSR sent MiG-25 aircraft for photo and radio reconnaissance [10] and other weapons.
    Sudan sent 3 soldiers.
Tunisia sent about 1 thousand soldiers.
According to some reports, the first successes of the Arabs, especially in terms of the successful crossing of Suez by them, are explained by the solid help of Soviet military experts, who between 1967 and 1973 were about 50 thousand people in Egypt [11].

    JEWS

By the beginning of the war, Israel had an army of 110 thousand people (after mobilization - up to 415 thousand, including 310 thousand in the operational forces). Israel had 1 tanks (Sherman, M-850, Centurion, AMX and about 48 T-150/54 and PT-55 trophy tanks), 76 thousand armored personnel carriers and armored personnel carriers, 3 artillery tanks caliber installations more than 945 mm, 100 missile defense systems, 75 thousand artillery defense systems, 1 anti-tank installations. The Israeli Air Force numbered 930 fighters (352 A-150, 4 F-140, 4 Mirage-Sh, 50 Super Mysteries) and 12 reserve fighters (56 A-20, 4 F-36 ”), 4 Vautour bombers, 8 transport aircraft (66“ S-6 ”, 130“ S-12 ”, 47“ S-10 ”, 97“ Noratlas ”), 30 combat helicopters (50“ Super Frelon ”, 8 “SN-12”, 53 “AB-30”).

Israel received (a few days later the start of Soviet aid to the Arabs) US arms assistance: during the war, the Americans sent the Jewish state 128 combat aircraft, 150 tanks, 2 ATGMs of the latest type, cluster bombs, a total of 27 thousand tons of military cargo [12] . At the same time, it was the United States that did not allow Israel to finish off Egypt and Syria when, at the end of the war, the Israeli army advanced towards Cairo and Damascus.

The author claims that there were 800 Cubans, and that they did not reach. And it seems to me that he is right.
of which between 1967 and 1973 there were about 50 thousand people in Egypt [11].

For 5 years, you can count 100 (take a longer term, add on current Russian tourists, do not forget the builders of the Aswan hydroelectric station - it will be a wonderful picture). All this very much resembles the "presence" of the Russian army in the Donbass.

The author is talking about the crews of tanks, and not about the total number of Cubans. They arrived, but the war ended. The numbers are not mine, I took them from the Internet. But any statistics on losses, participation in hostilities are always contradictory. Take the Iraq-Iran war. The spread of the dead is enormous: from 136 thousand to a million. But the participation of the countries I indicated and the number of forces directed against Israel are official data of these same countries. Maybe exaggerated, maybe understated, who knows ....

Yeah, the Arabs dispersed, so they gave you the victory of their instability, 3 days in the "cutoff" and already a panic .. But to advance without having covered flanks and two enemy armies in the rear?

Suez showed that even the frightened Arabs were able to burn a couple of dozen tanks. And with fear they could crush the wedged-in group.

About "behind the rear two combat armies of the enemy" - it is doubtful. What kind of combat capability are they, if the supply is cut and the air defense is suppressed on the ground? Chazli correctly writes that the mistake of the Egyptians was that there was no armed forces left on the eastern shore of the canal. And the main argument of Kissinger was: "Think of the captured Israelis." This is he Golda Meir presented. The Egyptians had a little more than a hundred captured Jewish soldiers and officers. The Israelites naturally have thousands and thousands. But prisoners are a weak spot for Jews, even if it is one person. Therefore, Suez did not storm and the corridor to supply the surrounded 100000 group provided.

Quality beats quantity. Not always, of course, in the conditions of development or in the desert, things could have been different. There are many examples of quality-quantity; the German army in the Second World War was qualitatively better, primarily in the preparation, management and interaction of the combat arms, and defeated almost all of Europe. But there was a completely different scale. The German army of the 2nd world - perhaps the best army in history.
Napoleon is an example of the quality of command, but probably this is still an exception, there was no other like that, a brilliant commander of all times and peoples.

In terms of the quality of training, command and control at all levels, and the interaction of the armed forces, the German army of the Second World War was apparently a model. At the end of the war, no longer, rather, there was no longer any resources and time. With all opponents, in more or less equal quantitative conditions, the German army coped. Yes, the degree of qualitative difference was not so great, especially towards the end of the war. In the Israeli-Arab wars, this difference seems endless.

And - on the basis of Internet links and articles from WIKI ... And in the "net" you can find links about anything, and confirming anything - and, in defiance of them - refusing to "zero" these same ... "British scientists "! Actually, the Internet is the global chatter and global gossip ...
... so - the Israelis “defeated” Egypt not because of military talents and martial art, but because of the political support of the USA, England and the UN; and - in many respects - the tactics of massive political terror and sabotage provocations that were circulating at that time (now widely used, such as - "bombing of the civilian Arab population by Israeli aviation as a preventive measure against Arab aggression ... the intentions of Arab extremists to attack Israeli territory have been revealed rocket attack destroyed two schools and three hospitals in neighboring Syria ... Libya ... Lebanon ... Iran ... Iraq ... Jordan

        ---------------------------------------------
... But the Jews could be grateful to Russia - and the USSR! As one of them rightly remarked: “No, we must not leave Russia! Here we are Jews! And there, outside it, we are nobody ...” It seems that this was one of the founders of the significant Zionist political movement (I don’t remember exactly who )
        -------------------------------------------
Most of Israel’s current political leaders are former military men with experience in sabotage and provocative work! With their coming to power, not only the middle and lower administrative-political link in the Israeli leadership changed, but - they, in many ways pro-Russian ones - actively survive from the country, and even are persecuted with a distinctly political implication! I would add a description of how Israel threw special forces into the Syrian rear and stopped the advance of Iraqi columns. The participant was the future head of the General Staff and the future Minister of Defense, a native of Iran, Shaul Mofaz. The second time the landing was discovered by Syrian air defense and the operation failed.

While reading the article, I was interested in one point:
To help the crumbling Syrian front, the Jordanian king gallantly sent there his elite 40 Tank Brigade. There was a tank battle, which ended in defeat for the Jordanians. Understanding all the national difficulties of the Jordanian king, the Israeli media did not say a word about the participation of the Jordanian troops in the war and their defeat on the Syrian front.

I wonder why Jordan, taking this opportunity, did not get to bite off the bit of land from Israel? Information about a weak kingdom at that time comes across in the internet, however, the king sent tanks to help the Syrians and it seemed like the Jordanian air defense on Israeli aircraft was working - a strange thing, especially considering the fact that a third front would be very bad for the Jews.

In order to understand this, one should look at what is happening in a historical perspective. The fact is that Jordan is among the top five countries with which Israel had to fight throughout the entire period of the Arab-Israeli wars. At the same time, the Hashemite dynasty never experienced much hostility towards the Jews. The kings of Jordan come from the Bedouin family, and the Bedouins have always been friends of Israel rather than their enemies. (Some of them now even serve in the IDF.) Historically, Jordan has always fought with Israel rather "for the company." No matter how ridiculous it may seem, but it is so accepted in the Arab world - a person or a state that does not support war or rebellion becomes a traitor and an even more terrible enemy than the one against whom it was supposed to fight initially.
Did you know that July 20 1951 was a Muslim radical who killed Jordanian King Abdullah (today's grandfather) who was negotiating with the Israelis? His death was a warning to every Arab politician who thought about peace with Israel. After the death of Abdullah, the throne was succeeded by his minor grandson - Prince Hussein. Until the end of his days, he could not forget how, in his eyes, his grandfather was killed by a large Jerusalem mosque just for wanting to make peace with Israel.
King Hussein, no less than his grandfather, was located towards Israel, but he understood how difficult it is to convince the world of his own subjects, most of whom are Palestinian Arabs. Unlike Abdullah, he was an enlightened monarch. He perfectly understood the limits of his power. He knew that he could not do what he did not like his own subjects and the Arab world in general. In the most fertile and richest part of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan live Palestinians who believe that Emir Abdullah, the founder of the Hashemite Kingdom, betrayed the Palestinian cause and went to an alliance with Israel. King Hussein was always worried about the prospect of an independent Palestinian state. He understood that sooner or later the Palestinians would want to receive a part of the territory of Jordan, which did not suit the king. Therefore, he tried not to quarrel with Palestinian militant organizations and allowed them to use the territory of Jordan for attacks against Israel. (He decided to offer Israel peace only in 94.)
Before the Six-Day War 1967, the Palestinians posed a great danger to the Jordanian King Hussein, and not to Israel: the Palestinians constituted the majority of Jordan’s population and did not like the king — he was not at all going to help the Palestinian Arabs throw Jews into the sea and create their own state. He was interested only in the expansion of the borders of his own kingdom. In the summer of 70, militants of Yasser Arafat, who settled in Jordan, actually tried to kill the king and take power in the country. 9 June Palestinians fired King Hussein's car, he accidentally survived. 2 September they again tried to destroy the king. September 7 Palestinians tried to capture four passenger aircraft at once. One of the planes belonged to an Israeli airline, these flights were accompanied by guards, who managed to shoot one of the terrorists and injured three. The plane landed safely in London.
The plane of the American company “Panamerican” was planted by the terrorists in Cairo, the passengers were released, and the ship was blown up. The other two - American and Swiss - were put in Jordan, at the abandoned Dawson airport, which the Palestinians renamed the “Airport of the Revolution”. Women and children were allowed to go to the ground, the remaining one hundred fifty people were held as hostages in the planes. Passengers suffered from the heat under the scorching sun of the desert. On September 10, the Palestinians also captured a British plane that was flying from Bombay to London and put it in the same desert. By one hundred and fifty hostages was added another hundred and seventeen. King Hussein’s cup of patience is overflowing. Government troops attacked the headquarters of Palestinian militants. On September 13, the Palestinians freed all the hostages except forty, but blew up all three aircraft in Dawson. On September 16, King Hussein formed a military government and demanded that the loyal army units of the Bedouins clean the entire country from Palestinian militants. September 20 neighboring Syria came to the aid of the Palestinians. Syrian tanks crossed the border of Jordan, but the Jordanians stubbornly resisted. The intervention of the Syrians almost turned the internal conflict into a big war. The US military feared that, following Syria, the Soviet Union would come to the aid of the Palestinians. In this case, the United States will be forced to save Jordan. At the Pentagon, plans have already been made to transfer additional army units to Cyprus, Greece and Turkey, from where they will be able to land in Jordan. The carrier-based task forces were deployed near the Lebanese coast. Accordingly, the Soviet 5-I operational squadron, consisting of fifty ships, among them were twelve submarines, became more active in the Mediterranean. Soviet ships equipped with guided missiles, relentlessly followed the US aircraft carriers. On September 21, the Israeli ambassador to Washington, Yitzhak Rabin (future Israeli Prime Minister) was invited to the White House, where he was asked to help the King of Jordan, in particular, to provide an umbrella for Jordanians who fought with Syrians. The Americans were surprised that the American request for Rabin was not a surprise. He not only immediately agreed to an umbrella before the Syrians completely retreated, but also offered to launch an air strike against the Syrian positions. The Americans immediately warned the USSR of the readiness of Israel to strike at the Syrian troops in Jordan, which apparently served as a signal for the Syrians and they withdrew their troops. The Palestinian troops lost the bout with the Jordanian army - the Bedouins have shattered about 10 in the cabbage Palestinian bandyukov. Remains relocated to Lebanon. Yasser Arafat himself was taken from Jordan on a private plane by Sudanese leader Nimeiri. The big war did not break out. But these events had great consequences. The next day, September 29, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser died suddenly in Cairo. He burst out, unsuccessfully persuading the Palestinians and Jordanians to stop the fratricidal war. (He was succeeded by Anwar Sadat, who will eventually sign peace with Israel.) The Palestinians settled in southern Lebanon, not far from the border with Israel. The leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organization settled in Muslim West Beirut. Lebanon, with its weak state machine and a fragmented religious division, was too weak to prevent Palestinians from creating a state in the state. Palestinians easily drove the weak Lebanese army out of southern Lebanon. This led to the final collapse of the central government in Lebanon. In Syria, the recent commander of the air force, then Secretary of Defense Hafez Assad (father's current ophthalmologist), came to power. It was he who in September deprived Syrian tanks abandoned against Jordan of air cover, but deftly blamed his predecessor for the failure of the military operation and overthrew him in November 70. Hafez Asad sent Syrian troops to Lebanon under the pretext of protecting Christians.
Hafez Asad and Anwar Sadat did not disclose all of their plans to King Hussein. First, they wanted to make peace with Hussein after the trouble with the PLO in 1970. The king remembered well the attempted coup, but reconciled and restored diplomatic relations with Syria. After that, he was hinted that another war with Israel is possible, without dates, in principle. Hussein flinched. He has already lost half of his kingdom in the Six Day War, is it worth risking again? The maximum that was succeeded in persuading the matured and more cautious king was the promise of some fraternal support on one of the fronts. And Hussein made this promise more out of necessity than out of a special desire. He needed this war like a boil in that very place. 25 September 1973, the king, sat down in a helicopter, he secretly flew to Jerusalem and told the Prime Minister of Israel Golda Meir that the Syrian army had been on alert for two days. This can only mean preparation for a new war. Hussein and Golda Meir were talking on a secret facility that belonged to Mossad. Preserved record of the conversation. Golda Meir did not believe the Jordanian king. Next, what happened happened ...

I will tell you about sea operations, although there is nothing special to tell there. And on the one and the other side of a serious military fleet almost never happened.
Gaza sat as quietly as a mouse under a broom. They still remembered themselves well under the rule of Egypt. Egyptian policemen had wooden batons, but they were worn out in Gaza and they were replaced with them once in two months.
Nothing happened at the border with Lebanon. On the other side, the Syrians pulled up only small reserves. But just three weeks before the start of the war, 13 September 1973, the Israeli pilots celebrated a real success. As a result of air combat in the sky over the border between Lebanon and Syria, 12 MIG-21 aircraft of the Syrian air forces were shot down. The Israelis got out of the battle with almost no losses. Today it is already known that this particular incident became a serious catalyst in the preparation of Syria and Egypt for a sudden war against Israel.

“West Bank” is Judea and Samaria. The Arabs who lived there, for the most part, did not yet know that they were none other than the "Palestinian people." Only the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the CPSU Central Committee published in the days of this war the Appeals of the CPSU Central Committee to November 7 1973 of the year firmly knew about the existence of such people:
Long live the fraternal Palestinian people, moaning under the cruel oppression of the Zionist invaders who wound their snake's nest with the help of the American imperialists in the heart of the freedom-loving Middle East! Cheers, comrades!

The local Arab residents did not even have time to wake up from the twenty-year Jordan occupation, which ended only 5 years before, after the Six-Day War. So they behaved quietly in the hope that Jordan would not return there. Local population of the USSR will be heated there in the coming months. If you are interested, you can explore a number of amusing documents:

All this is interesting. Even more interesting, what about the Israeli strategy regarding the Palestinians in particular and the Arab world in general. The bet on armed confrontation, apparently, is unpromising based on the ratio of human resources. Wait, when the evolution of power and life of Arab countries will lead to democratization, growth of welfare, drift of ideas of the value of life and death, "liberalization" of Islam? Probably just that. Clearly, under the umbrella of the United States, there is still no other option. Or is there?

"The Arab world in general" Palestinians are fed up with bitter radish. Because of them, the whole region cannot live a peaceful life. Destroyed after Europe's 2MW Marshall Plan raised from the ruins over several years. Vpalistintsev vbuhali already 3 (three !, Karl) such a plan. Grandmas settled in the pockets of the local bandyukov. Anyone who has at least a drop of brains understand this. Those of our neighbors who understood this earlier - Jordan and Egypt, are reaping the fruits of peace with Israel. Those who continue to dream of throwing Israel into the sea - Syria and Lebanon live in conditions of international wars, famine and devastation. Heats them Iran. The country is not Arab, but Muslim. Nothing good shines for these countries. When will they understand this? I do not know. I have already spoken at VO a hundred times, but I will repeat it again. Among the countries surrounding Israel there is no power that constitutes a real threat to it. Syria is in ruin, Egypt has its own problems, and the peace treaty 40 has not been observed to violate has been handled for years - it has no complaints against Israel. Jordan from Israel back in 1994 got everything she wanted, and soon the gas will go there and the railroad will provide access to the Mediterranean Sea. Beggar a half-ruined Lebanon from which even the prime minister ran away? Not even funny. Iran will try to flay Israel? It is not yet known whether he will decide on this. Even if they decide, they will try to do it not by themselves, but by proxy, Hezbollah starts. This conflict will be narrowly regional. Lebanon, of course, will have a crap, but Israel will cope. Not for the first time.

You are considering one of the levels, Israel - Palestine / Arab countries with sublevels that you talked about. There are more global confrontations. Western civilization / USA - Arab countries, here is the place of Israel in a certain tool of irritation / distraction, goals and, at the same time, instruments of deterrence. The United States has already dealt with threats / states, they have been destroyed, although the nourishing base of terrorists still remains and, apparently, will leave very soon. In this sense, Israel for the Arabs will be a clearly / openly declared target for a long time, although in the current situation their means of attack will bite such a target dearly. Well, actually, there, apparently, there are enough people who do not know the price of life and death because of their worldview / lifestyle. The Middle East does not seem to be peaceful soon.

You see, I would not want to globalize a narrow territorial conflict. Indeed, in fact, we are talking only about a few patches of land. This disproportionately receives much attention. This conflict is one of the smallest in the world. Israel is a tiny country half the size of the Moscow Region, which has no strategic importance. There is no oil and other minerals. The 3 / 4 Territory is a barren rocky desert. Everyone knows this and understands perfectly. The Muslim world is huge, and Israel is just a dot on the map.

Thank you, Korax71, for the kind words and interest in my "opuses".
As for the "contribution of the USSR to the formation and development of Israel," then there is nothing special to say about this. I will not in any way detract from the merits of the USSR in the creation of a Jewish state. From the 33-s states voted "FOR" - 3 votes were from the USSR and 2 from its satellites. However, it should be understood and another side of this issue. The creation of Israel naturally squeezed Britain from a strategically important region and could enable the USSR to take its place. The words of Stalin are widely known:
“Let's agree to the formation of Israel. It will be like an awl in the ass for the Arab states and make them turn their backs on Britain. Ultimately, British influence will be completely undermined in Egypt, Syria, Turkey and Iraq."

After the end of World War II, Great Britain could no longer hold its colonies, and many of them gained independence. Palestine is no exception. Whether the UN would vote for partitioning or not, the Jewish state already existed by that time.
Yes, Joseph Vissarionovich graciously allowed Czechoslovakia to supply arms to Israel, but they were not of decisive importance. Deliveries were limited to two dozens of converted Messerschmitts of poor quality at astronomical prices and small arms. Avia S-199 were delivered to Israel - for the price of $ 180 000 per plane. For comparison, the Americans sold fighters for $ 15 000, and bombers for $ 30 000 per plane. Palestine’s air service purchased C-46 Commando medium transport planes in different countries for $ 5 000, four-engine transport planes C-69 Constellation for $ 15 000 per piece, heavy bombers B-17 for $ 20 000. In Palestine, there was still a war, and the staff of the USSR Ministry of State Security had already killed the world-famous theater director and Jewish public figure Solomon Mikhoels, followed by "The Case of Doctors", "Fighting Cosmopolitans" and other very serious repressions against Jews. Israel has never feared domestic anti-Semitism. On the contrary, the more bytoviki put pressure on the Jews, the greater their number comes to Israel. Israel has always been afraid State anti-semitism. All this could not please the young Jewish state, and with all its socialist essence (yes, idealistic socialists created Israel, the Communist Party and trade unions were very strong at that time), went under the wing of the West, and the USSR began to help Arab countries. In other words, there could be no more talk about any "formation and development" of speech.
I do not see much point in writing a special thematic article. VO already has quite a decent article on this topic, written A professor 4 a year ago .: "How Stalin created Israel. On the 66 anniversary of the independence of Israel."

Hello, Korax71. On your questions, I can say the following: Israel Halperin, who changed his name and surname to Isser Harel, served in intelligence, and then led the intelligence and security services of Israel from the first days of the proclamation of our state in 1948 until his resignation in 1963. In Wikipedia about it quite decent and rather detailed article:
          http://qoo.by/3StT
The myth of the "Soviet volunteers" who allegedly participated in the War of Independence of Israel can be found on the net. As the respected Professor rightly noted, the facts completely expose this myth - in the archives of the organization of the Mahal volunteers there is no information about volunteers from the USSR. This organization has lists of names about 4 400 volunteers, including men, women, Jews and non-Jews from 58 from different countries who came to the aid of the Jewish state during the difficult days of the War of Independence. It is known that the creation of Israel caused a stream of appeals of Soviet Jews to the authorities of the USSR with a request to send them as volunteers to the fighting Jewish state. The Soviet authorities brutally suppressed this truly popular movement. A number of people who made such requests or tried to leave were illegally convicted by Soviet punitive bodies.

It could well be. Above, we talked about the absence in Israel of Jews from the USSR in relation to 1948. By 1967, the situation has changed.
Only 1955-57 in Israel arrived a wave of 35 000 repatriates from Poland, mostly returning to Poland from the USSR. The Jews of Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia traveled. After the Hungarian 1956 uprising of the year, about 9 000 Jews arrived in Israel illegally. In 1961-64, about 63 000 Jews from Romania arrived in the country. It is known that Ceausescu was engaged in the "sale" of Jews: for big money he allowed them to travel to Israel. Among these repatriates there could well be quite a few people who knew Russian well.
