In the US, the number of suicides among veterans is more than the number of those killed during the hostilities 25 times
Researchers point out that one and a half American soldiers die every day and a half, while war veterans die approximately every eighty minutes. Each year, more than 6500 suicides of veterans are recorded, which is significantly more than the number of American soldiers who died in Iraq and Afghanistan since the outbreak of hostilities.
In parallel, there has been an increase in the number of those who suffer from anxiety, depression and other mental illnesses. Most often, stress disorders are the main cause of suicide, as well as crimes committed by war veterans. Basically, they are subject to those military personnel who have served several terms of service.
In particular, more than one-third of American soldiers who served three to four terms are prone to mental disorders. According to preliminary data, in men between the ages of 17 and 24, the risk of such disorders increases fourfold. Commenting on statistical studies, Bob Fielner, a congressman and Democrat from San Diego and a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee of the United States of America, said that this is already an epidemic that the authorities are not paying due attention to. According to Filner, much more can be done to solve this problem.
Meanwhile, the congressman noted positive changes. In particular, the US Department of Veterans Affairs created a hotline for psychological assistance to the military, as well as measures are being taken to eradicate the stereotype of the shamefulness of male treatment for psychological assistance from the minds of American soldiers.
In addition, since March 2009, the US military leadership has begun to implement programs aimed at reducing the number of suicides: this is the creation of a working group dedicated to the prevention of suicide, it is also a military weekend to study the problem of suicide. In addition, twice a year, all US Army soldiers must undergo psychological testing.
However, according to Patrick Bellon, who heads the Veterans for Common Sense organization, there are still many unresolved problems and gaps. He said that over the next five years, the number of veterans will increase by one million people. The Committee already faces problems related to their number, so it’s hard to say what actions will be taken in the future.
