Heavy machine gun: weighing possibilities

Since the US Armed Forces are paying more and more attention to improving the mass-capability ratio of their weapons systems, consider the current state of a large-caliber machine gun tested in battles.

The heavy machine gun remains one of the favorite weapons systems of the armies of many countries of the world, providing combat units with such a damaging effect that is necessary to destroy manpower and material objects at increased distances inherent in the modern battlefield.

However, since the need to reduce the combat load associated with conducting dismounted melee and special forces operations continues to grow - part of the growing global trend to improve infantry mobility throughout the battlefield - the army and industry of the leading countries of the world are developing new concepts that will equip modern fighters easier options beloved by them weapons.

Honored option

Perhaps the most famous of these systems is the M2A1 Quick Change Barrel (QCB) machine gun manufactured by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GDOTS), which is an upgrade to the existing M2 Browning machinegun. Deliveries of the new version to all units of the army are expected to be completed before 2019.

This option, chambered for the NATO standard 12.7x99 mm, weighs 38,2 kg, including the 10,88 kg trunk mass - a vivid illustration of the workloads that its calculations have to undergo when performing combat missions.

According to Picatinny Arsenal, the M2 machine gun is an “air-tested” air-cooled weapon system, the operation of which is based on the use of recoil force. A machine gun with a tape feed is installed either on the machine-tripod MZ, or on combat vehicles.

In addition, the versatility of the M2 allows it to be used to combat manpower, defeat vehicles and fire weapons and air defense. It allows you to fight with high efficiency with light armored vehicles, slow and low-flying aircraft and small boats.

“Machine gun М2 provides fighters with automatic fire to suppress during offensive and defensive actions. It can fire in two modes: single (ground gun M2) and automatic fire. According to the soldiers, in their arsenal of small arms, the M2 machine gun deservedly takes pride of place, being one of the most effective weapon systems, ”said a company representative.

In Arsenal Picatinny emphasize the importance of the new model, its qualitatively new characteristics. Quick-release barrel, fixed bolt installation are the most important improvements machine gun M2. "Improved features and design improvements make it easier and safer to use."

“Machine gun М2А1 accelerates the process of hitting targets and increases survivability and safety by reducing the time required to change the barrel and eliminate the need to manually adjust the shutter. The M2А1 also has a flame arrestor that reduces the muzzle flash by 95%, which makes it difficult to detect it in the dark. "

According to the company, the machine gun began to come into service with the American army in 2011, and the modernization of its entire arsenal of 45000 machine guns M2 to the A1 specification for plans should be completed by 2019 year.

Despite its very attractive ability to accurately hit targets at the maximum valid range of 1,8 km (and maximum range of 6,8 km when firing on calculated data), the M2А1 QCB machine gun remains an extremely burdensome piece of wearable equipment, which is especially noticeable in dismounted melee combat.

The machine gun is not only a heavy burden for its calculation, its installation and “aiming” at the target takes several minutes. In a dynamically changing combat situation, such time intervals do not contribute to an increase in the combat effectiveness of machine-gunners.

Therefore, many armament forces are considering lighter systems, as well as alternative calibers, which could potentially provide the same lethal effect and increased range, like the М2А1 machine gun.

In the market

Currently, there are many models of large-caliber machine guns available on the world market. Among them, it is worth noting the M3M weapons system from FN America, which is already in service with the US Navy and Marine Corps under the designation GAU-21.

With a mass of 36,4 kg, the M3M machine gun (also under the 12.7x99 mm cartridge) has a barrel of 36 inches in length, which allows achieving the same range of damage as the М2А1 model. However, the company continues to promote the M3M machine gun for installation on helicopters in order to provide "barrage fire at distances up to 2000 meters," although the US Department of Defense approved its use for all types of armed forces.

The life of the barrel with a short stroke is 10000 shots. This machine gun has an improved flame arrester to reduce the signature in the conduct of hostilities in low light conditions, as well as a perforated barrel casing, which made it possible to optimize its cooling during protracted skirmishes.

Machine gun М2НВ manufactured by Manroy Engineering (a division of FN Herstal), also under the standard NATO cartridge 12.7x99 mm, remains in service with the British army under the designation L111A1. The weapon is easy to customize for shooting with the right and left hands and has an open sight, which is adjustable in range from 100 meters to 2,6 km.

Among other offers on the market we note the machine gun STK 50MG from the Singapore company ST Kinetics. The machine gun has a quick-detachable barrel, differs by a fixed gap between the shutter mirror and the sleeve bottom and two loading windows on the sides. A gas-guided, open-bolted machine gun can fire in semi-automatic or automatic modes.

The STK 50MG machine gun is a lightweight alternative to the aforementioned models of machine guns, because it has a total weight of 30 kg and a weight of the barrel assembly of the entire 9 kg. The machine gun shoots the standard NATO cartridge 12.7x99 mm, but can also fire a light armor-piercing sabot cartridge.

“The double-sided feed of the tape allows you to quickly change the type of ammunition, while the fixed clearance between the breech mirror and the breech breech allows you to change the barrel in a few minutes without having to adjust this gap,” explained the representative of ST Kinetics.

In addition, many countries are armed with Soviet-made machine guns chambered for 12.7x108 mm, including the DShK machine gun.

Platform focus

Although a large-caliber machine gun is capable of providing impressive firepower for dismounted infantry units leading melee combat, it is also very readily installed on aircraft and ships, tactical ground vehicles and stationary objects.

The representative of General Dynamics Land Systems believes that the bright future of this weapon is guaranteed due to its wide distribution on platforms of various types, which, among other things, is connected "perhaps with the widest range of easily installed supports, machines and brackets."

More traditional options include the installation of such machine guns in remotely controlled combat modules. For example, Picatinny Arsenal installs a large-caliber machine gun in the M153 CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station) II module manufactured by the Norwegian company Kongsberg.

“The CROWS module allows the operator to capture and hit targets while under the protection of the machine’s armor. CROWS is a stabilized installation into which the sensor set and fire control software is integrated, which allows you to capture targets in motion and hit targets from the first stage, ”the army representative explained.

“The CROWS sensor unit, capable of capturing targets day and night, includes a daytime video camera, a thermal imaging camera and a laser range finder. CROWS is designed to be installed on any combat vehicle, you can install the 40-mm grenade launcher Mk19, 12,7-mm machine gun М2, 7,62-mm machine gun М240В and 5,56-mm machine gun for the department М249 ”.

At the SOFINS show, held in the French city of Bordeaux, French special operations forces presented an EFC battle boat with an 12.7xXNNXX mm machine gun, which can be replaced by an automatic grenade launcher or a pair of paired 99 XMUM machine guns.

A further increase in the capabilities of large-caliber machine guns in the future combat space is associated with remotely controlled machines, which today already have light 7,62-mm machine guns installed to protect their forces and fire support.

The Marine Corps, for example, is currently considering promising options for the MUTT (Multi Utility Tactical Transport) 6x6 and 8x8 robotic complex developed by General Dynamics Land Systems, which could deliver a machine gun to almost any place on the battlefield.

“MUTT machine can be transported aviationfor example, in the cabin of the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor, which will allow the hull to conduct operations “flew into battle” and, thereby, expand its range and increase firepower on the battlefield, ”said a representative of General Dynamics Land Systems.

The remotely controlled MUTT machine allows you to deliver heavy machine gun almost anywhere in the battlefield

In developing

However, the armed forces are looking for solutions that can alleviate the wearable combat load in a direct clash, especially in a dismounted melee and during special operations.

The representative of General Dynamics Land Systems explained that the US Army is considering the development of a lightweight version of the M2 based on an updated receiver, it is quite possible from titanium. The request for information was released in the middle of 2017, but the army is still unable to comment on this concept and on the time frame when it can be implemented. “The idea is to follow the path of creating an easy titanium receiver for the M240 machine gun when the M240L model appeared as a result.”

The US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) is interested in light options and in November 2017 held a joint conference with the industry to examine all the available proposals.

According to the official application USSOCOM. published on the website of federal commercial opportunities, the command wants to get a “long-range machine gun” with a firing range over 2 km, but “a mass comparable to the mass of the current average machine gun,” which is of the order of 10,8 kg.

In support of this program, USSOCOM is looking for lightweight alternative ammunition that could reduce the weight of ammunition in service by at least 30% across the entire range of calibers from 5.56xXNNUMX mm to 45x12.7 mm.

Such needs “provoked” an interest in the technology of the LWMMG (Lightweight Medium Machine Gun) medium machine gun, with the result that in May 2017 of the year USSOCOM published its request to the applicants. “The command of special forces together with the KMP is looking for industrial enterprises that are capable of supplying five thousand machine guns with tape feed under the cartridge .338 Norma Magnum (NM).” including the weapon itself, a flame arrester, a tripod and tools for basic maintenance, ”the statement reads.

“The LWMMG should fire .338 NM cartridges with a plastic sleeve of loose cartridge tape. The LWMMG should weigh less than 10,9 kg with an 24 inch barrel. LWMMG should have an 500-600 firing rate per minute. The weapon will be compatible with current sighting systems mounted on standard guides, with the ability to incorporate advanced fire control technology. ”

“The system should include a barrel with a flame arrester and a barrel without a flame arrester, they should be quick-detachable. The LWMMG should include a light tripod and provide the stability and accuracy necessary to hit targets at extreme distances. LWMMG should be installed in existing machine guns designed for М240В / С machine guns. The weapon must have sufficient accuracy to hit targets and vehicles at a distance of 2000 meters, ”the statement reads.

According to the representative of USSOCOM, this last requirement speaks of the desire of the Command to replace the existing machine guns of caliber 12.7x99 mm with lighter medium machine guns. However, industry experts have also expressed the opinion that, although the LWMMG machine gun variants can reach the same ranges, they will not be able to match the capabilities of the 12.7xXNNUMX mm cartridge in terms of the destruction of the material part.

Possible competition

The company GDOTS want to participate in the program with its mid-caliber version chambered for .338NM. The company said that the live firing of this machine gun was carried out in Fort Benning's 2011.

“The next generation light medium machine gun gives the fighters a clear advantage in combat at long distances and in close combat,” a GDOTS company press release said. “Filling the gap between 7,62 mm and 12.7 mm guns, LWMMG uses the highly efficient .338 Norma Magnum cartridge to offer incomparable accuracy and lethality while expanding the combat space to impressive 1700 meters.”

The LWMMG machine gun from GDOTS is distinguished by a recoil reduction mechanism, which is comparable to the recoil force of an 7,62-mm machine gun, while it provides a striking effect and stopping power inherent in a larger .338NM caliber.

According to the company's press release, “With 1000 meters, the LWMMG machine gun can penetrate body armor with protection level III and disable unarmored vehicles, delivering more than 2500 joules of energy to them — more than 4 times the NATO standard’s terminal effect ".

The machine gun weighs 10,8 kg, has a total length of 1.2 meter with a barrel length of 24 inch. It has a maximum valid range of 1.7 km and a maximum range of 5,6 km according to calculated data. LWMMG, structurally similar to any machine gun chambered for 12.7x99 mm, can also be installed on existing machines, mounts and brackets and on various platforms, air, land and sea.

The system with quick-release barrel is equipped with rail guides for mounting scopes and other tactical accessories, including laser designators.

“Patented technology to reduce the impact of Short Recoil Impulse Averaging significantly reduces the recoil and improves retention on the target with automatic fire. Light weight and low recoil make it easier for operators of all sizes to carry this machine gun and makes it easier to work with it, ”said a company spokesman.

“The medium machine gun LWMMG is a light weapons system that significantly expands the operational capabilities of a soldier. The machine gun is ideal for dismounted and motorized operations, but for dismounted operations, increasing the effective range and fire impact of a light weapon system is of particular importance. When installed on vehicles, it will provide their crews with high-precision fire at long distances, which is currently associated with the heavier machine gun M2. ”

The development of GDOTS in this area began after the cancellation of the 2012-mm XM12,7 machine gun in 806, which was originally designed with the intention of replacing the existing M2 machine gun. Machine gun ХМ806 with belt feed of cartridges 12.7x99 mm had a mass 18 kg.

Accessories

Despite unsuccessful attempts to reduce the size and weight of machine guns of caliber 12.7x99 mm, work is underway to reduce the size and weight of some systems and accessories for weapons of this type.

In July, the 2017 of the Year, the Office of the Weapons Management Program for the Soldier, published a pre-request document for additional supplies of the M205 tripods for the M2 and M2А1 machine guns, as well as the McKNNX heavy machine gun. Shipments to 19 machines with a total value of 19024 thousand dollars will go from 630 to 2018 a year. The M2022 is designed to replace the M205 machines in service.

The application says: “The improved M205 machine will replace the heavy and large M3 tripod machine for the ground installation of the M2 / M2А1 machine guns and the McNUMX grenade launcher.”

“The built-in mechanism for vertical and horizontal installation is built into the M205 machine, allowing you to control the weapon in azimuth and elevation. The main objective of the M205 machine is to provide a stable and easy-to-use platform for installing the M2 / M2A1 machine guns and the McNNXX grenade launcher and providing high-precision fire at increased distances to support both offensive and defensive operations. ”

It doesn’t matter if the American Army’s M2X1 mass reduction activity will be successful, the prospects for large-caliber machine guns seem to be very encouraging in modern and future combat spaces in which protection and booking are of particular importance.

The capabilities of weapons of this type regarding the defeat of the material part make it an attractive solution for protecting their forces and in offensive operations, while the industry’s efforts to reduce the weight of barrel boxes, ammunition and tripod machines will contribute to its greater spread in dismounted melee combat.

Add to this the functional flexibility that allows you to install on different types of platforms, and it seems that large-caliber machine guns do not exactly give up their positions, at least in the foreseeable future.

Modern armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles are protected from 12,7 mm bullets, NATO armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles are generally designed to be protected from a KPVT bullet, so I see no reason to spend money on range and military tests of heavy machine guns. Krupnyaki is already a thing of the past, as well as anti-tank rifles and small-caliber anti-aircraft guns, which were replaced by grenade launchers, ATGMs and MANPADS. Instead of grains against infantry, 40-mm automatic grenade launchers are now successfully used, and ordinary disposable grenade launchers or the good old RPG-7 can do an excellent job with BTR and BMP.

only STANAG 4 holds the KPVT bullet, and then, from 200+ meters. This is the board of Bradley (forehead and tower there are 5-6 lvl.)
Most armored vehicles are armored according to the STANAG 3 standard (and there are 2 sides), and it does not hold 12,7, it is designed to counteract armor-piercing 7,62x51 mm.

In the USA, apparently, they are cutting loot on such tests and orders. The US military budget is 600 lard, while the military budget of the Russian Federation is 60 lard. I read the report on the collision of the British (or the Americans? Forgot already - long read) with the Iraqis. The Iraqis stopped the English column and tried to burn equipment all night. The British just waved heavy machine guns. The Iraqis were not able to approach the range of the aimed shot from a grenade launcher, they even tried to shoot with a canopy (of course, they didn’t get anywhere).

Not surprising. Apparently, the Iraqi mountain warriors do not know that in the attack they should not run to their full height with a cry of “Allahu akbar”, but crawl along the plastunsky, hiding under the folds of the terrain.

Here from this I also happened to shoot - on a tripod.
Only the tripod was more complex and heavy with height-holding brackets
and horizontal. The Colt M2 has a single player mode - for shooting.
In the evening before sunset, we were shooting solo on several targets through the gorge (about 1 km),
recorded marks in a notebook. Then in the dark they shot already “blindly”, setting the barrel at
tags, ... and hit! It was visible on the tracers when the bullets, sticking in, illuminated the rock and the target.
Ballistics at Colt 0.5 is exceptionally good. And reliable. Therefore, they are holding him already

Krupnyak will never be a thing of the past. There will always be goals for him (helicopters, any units on a car chassis, light armored vehicles, infantry in light shelters / city buildings, etc.) and, therefore, tasks. The AGS will not replace it, it is indisputable and obvious to anyone who has been in a battle with the participation of the NSV, KPVT, DShK. I did not have to touch Browning, but I have no doubt in its highest efficiency.

Therefore, apparently, from the great need for groats, even in armored personnel carriers they already switched to 30-mm guns? The main problem of large-caliber bullets is that it is impossible to create an effective fragmentation damaging effect in it. A direct hit on the target is necessary, even if the bullet hits 10 cm from the target, then even if the bullet is MDZ, then there will be nothing for the target. Not without reason, back in the 30s, they switched to 20 mm ShVAK cartridges due to the weak fragmentation and incendiary effect of 12,7 mm bullets on airplanes. Exactly from the same considerations, the T-60s armed the ShVAK, while the T-40 had the DShK.

Everything is not so clear. Not all tasks can be solved by ags or RPG. And there and there, sorry pomegranate. If she stood on a combat platoon, she will detonate from any obstacle. Whether it's a branch or a brick wall. In addition, ags la ranges of over a thousand are weapons exclusively against group targets, for accuracy there + is two boots on the map. The RPG also does not have any serious accuracy at ranges of more than 300-500 meters (although, in truth, there are individuals who are able to build and get from a seven and a kilometer. But this is in the conditions of the shooting range and thanks to the ooooo much shooting experience)
So the question arises: how to solve problems on a point target (embrasure of the bunker, say) at ranges over 800 meters? or how do you get a forest brother in the undergrowth at the same range? or, for example, how to get someone behind a brick wall at the same ranges? How to hit a fast moving and maneuvering car at such a range? And there are a lot of such tasks. Here a small-caliber gun could help out. But there is a jamb - it’s good to roll a 300 kg gun only on asphalt using the forces of your favorite personnel. But in the mountains or, say, the forest, it is extremely difficult. Another thing is a cliff or some other dshk. Together with the machine, a thing weighs 60 kilograms, and therefore, 3 gold soldiers, holding the legs of the bed, can quite cheerfully prank with this device over very rough terrain. The ammunition of the designated deaysina is distributed among the remaining soldiers of the squad. All. we have a remedy for many headaches - and through the gorge you can get anyone through a dense undergrowth, and behind a brick wall, and, mind you, quite accurately, and, in addition, you have quite a lot of cartridges for the device. it’s possible to tuck into the blind somewhere. or according to pre-targeted landmarks.
Yes, often, a .50 caliber cartridge is redundant, so quite a while ago, military personnel from different countries of the Czech Republic have to switch to something less cyclical, but just as lethal and long-range. For example, 9 mm. About this, by the way, and is written in the article. But, so far, unfortunately (and, perhaps, fortunately), all the developments have not left the stage of research and experimental operation.

Now is not the period of the Second World War, the soldiers have not been on foot for 40-50 km on foot for a long time. Now we have not just rifle troops, but MOTO rifle troops riding on armored personnel carriers or infantry fighting vehicles, which have automatic guns in the towers. Therefore, what is the point of a platoon armed with a grain if there are armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles with guns? There are already three of them in the platoon!

The T-60s armed the ShVAK, largely because the development of a light mobilization tank based on the T-40 with a 45-mm cannon was delayed, and the front required at least something armored and on the tracks. So they put this ... product in the tower - until the end of work on the T-45 (the result of which was the T-70). The result was a moody gun with a low-power fragmentation shell.
It’s capricious because, after all adaptations to ground use, the automatics of the former air gun even with strict observance of all instructions refused to dust (for example, after a march to the battlefield). In the summer of 1942, complaints about TNS failures and the conversion of the T-60 into machine-gun tanks began to flow.
A low-power projectile is a payment for the simplicity of mastering ShVAK by industry. They simply made this gun from the commercially available 12,7 mm ShVAK machine gun with minimal changes - so I had to squeeze 20 mm ammunition 12,7 mm long in length. We got a light short projectile that quickly lost its initial speed. And if in aviation with its firing ranges this was not so important, then for the ShVAK air defense they were not suitable in any way (they were used sporadically - in the complete absence of alternatives).

The T-60 is not an anti-aircraft tank, so it does not fire at long ranges.

However, for a tank gun, the range of a direct shot is also important.

The main problem of large-caliber bullets is that it is impossible to create an effective fragmentation effect in it
Even as possible - here, check out:
Norwegian Raufoss Mk211, recognized as the best of its kind. They are used both in grains and in "anti-material" rifles. Americans produce it under license.
        Further quote:
        - The cartridge has an armor-piercing carbide core (tungsten carbide on a cobalt bond) and an incendiary composition (zirconium bushing) in front of it.
At a distance of 400m, a bullet pierces a 16mm steel armor plate.
The composition of the initiator is selected so that the detonation of explosives with a spray of the main incendiary component (zirconium powder) occurs at a distance of 30-40 cm behind the barrier. This achieves the ability to inflict significant damage on the enemy’s manpower inside. In general, the resulting particles of burning zirconium (about 20 pieces) can ignite flammable materials at a distance of 15 m. The cartridge is designed for use against helicopters, aircraft, armored and unarmored vehicles. Damage from a bullet is comparable to damage from a projectile light 20 mm gun.

        1 Incendiary mixture (initiator)
        2 explosive
        3 Zirconium bush (incendiary compound)
        4 Tungsten carbide armor-piercing core

This is an incendiary cartridge, not a fragmentation cartridge. Against infantry, a fragmentation effect is needed.

In Arsenal Picatinny emphasize the importance of the new model, its qualitatively new characteristics. Quick-release barrel, fixed bolt installation are the most important improvements machine gun M2. "Improved features and design improvements make it easier and safer to use."

Heh heh heh ... translating from bravura-reporting to normal: it was possible to simplify the machine gun so much that now modern soldiers can use it safely. smile
Seriously, at the end of the last century it turned out that already for the then generation, the mechanics of Ma Deuce were too complicated in terms of adjustments - ordinary soldiers forgot how to work with their hands. Therefore, it was decided to finalize the M2, removing the adjustments, improper performance of which according to statistics was the most dangerous in terms of injuries and equipment failure.

must be done to incapacitate Browning M2. And what needs to be regulated there?
It is not very quick, so it does not heat up. It is rarely cleaned. I did not see misfires from it.
Unlike the capricious Belgian MAG (M240 among Americans), with whom
I survived many unpleasant minutes and swore a lot.
The only problem with the M2 is brutally heavy. It is necessary to disassemble into 3 parts (with a tripod) to
      move with him quickly.

EMNIP, the main problems were with the adjustment of the shutter - more precisely, with the need to adjust the position of the shutter mirror (they could set the correct clearance not only everything) Therefore, in the new version, they introduced a fixed shutter installation.

(when a Palestinian pri_du_rock fired at us from afar)
The machine gun that I dropped from the turret began to shoot from the ground slowly, like a patient.
I saw (on exercises, not mine) and the "frenzied" MAG. Take your finger off

I would like to wish the Americans to spend more money on an ideologically obsolete design, because Already there are more interesting concepts in implementation, for example, using a new-fangled telescopic cartridge, which can radically reduce the receiver and, accordingly, the weight and overall dimensions of all weapons.

Is this such an old, extremely heavy thing? .... I mean this browning. By the way, the US Army is absolutely used to any weapon, regardless of size and weight, to be delivered using any kind of equipment, since it’s almost never encountered an equal or superior in strength to the enemy. I would like to see how the calculation of this machine gun will drag him to the hump under enemy fire. CORD is our everything!

Firstly, there is an opinion that in a collision of the US Army with an "equal force adversary" (Martians?), The capabilities of small arms will not be of paramount importance.

Secondly, the rifleman plays a relatively large role precisely in low-intensity conflicts.

Thirdly, the article clearly states that the Americans have long been trying to make the CCP easier / more EP. If they do succeed, then the machine will appear a little heavier than Pecheneg, but with capabilities close to Kord. Actually, it will take the place of just the M240, but it will supplant the Double as well.

Well, actually, as the experience of the First and Second World Wars showed, the most losses the troops suffered from artillery fire:
The past war clearly showed the power of fire, which is undoubtedly one of its most important lessons. Another equally important consequence of the war should be considered the unexpected fact revealed by it of the overwhelming power of artillery fire.

For 10 years it was considered indisputable that infantry fire was many times more destructive than artillery fire; this view was confirmed by statistics on losses in recent wars. It can be seen from the attached diagram III that before 1914, losses from gunfire were on average 6 times higher than losses from artillery fire {123}.

From the very beginning of the 1914 war, it turned out that, despite the appearance of machine guns, the widespread use of which almost tripled the strength of infantry fire, the destructive power of guns increased in even more formidable proportions.

According to the sanitary department of the main apartment, for the entire period of the war, losses in the main battles were distributed as follows: [224]

Loss from shells and hand grenades {124} - 67%
Losses from bullets (gun and machine gun) - 23%

Losses from other causes - 10%

Thus, we see that the percentage of losses changes sharply in favor of the guns: instead of the ratio 1: 6, now the losses from artillery fire have become three times more than from guns. In other words, the destructive power of an artillery shell increased by 18 times compared to a bullet
          http://militera.lib.ru/science/herr_fg/08.html

The infantry suffered the most losses from artillery fire. From the results of the examination in hospitals, it is known that only 17% of injuries are bullet. I think that among the wounds that ended in death, the percentage of bullet is not very different. This is of course for all branches of the army, but even assuming that all infantry wounds were bullet wounds, it turns out that 70% of infantrymen died from enemy bombs and shells and only 30% from bullets.

Adding to this the fact that most of the bullets that hit the enemy were fired by a few machine gunners, and the fact that the average time for 100% renewal of the personnel of a rifle company at the front was less than six months, we come to a disappointing conclusion - nine out of ten foot soldiers on both sides of the front were not killed their personal weapons not a single enemy. They arrived in the trenches only then, on average six months later, to go to the hospital (or to the grave) with a fragment in the body. To serve as a target for enemy artillery.
          http://fat-yankey.livejournal.com/68204.html
It is artillery that breaks through the enemy fortifications and defenses, destroying the defenses and destroying the enemy’s manpower. And from small arms, the main losses are suffered in African wars, where blacks are armed only with machine guns and machine guns, and they have very little artillery. Those Yankees mainly fight with artillery and aircraft, first mix the enemy’s ground with artillery fire and air attacks, and only then go on the offensive under cover of armored vehicles.

According to Chechen separatists, the RPG-7 grenade launcher and its artisanal modifications became the main means of defeating the personnel of Russian troops. The composition of the assault groups of the separatists and their weapons is noteworthy, where 5 RPG-7s and an additional one RPG-22 and RPG-18 per person are assigned to XNUMX people.
The attack of our strongholds always began with a massive strike using a large number of RPGs and RPO Bumblebee. An analysis of our losses in Afghanistan also speaks of the effectiveness of this tactic. With the total number of killed 13700 people, direct combat losses from small arms fire amounted to approximately 35%, and from gunshot fragmentation defeats - 40% (mainly the result of grenade fire).

Well. And the adherents of the Krupnyak sect also continue to tell stories about the "benefits" of Krupnyak. It’s better to carry grenade launchers on yourself instead of the groats. There will be more benefits. And the groats will be replaced by an automatic gun BTR or BMP. Moreover, the gun on the BMP or BTR will be covered with armor and an order of magnitude more mobile than 50 kg Cord with a box of 50 rounds. But in an armored personnel carrier the ammunition load of 30 mm shells in selective tapes is 500 rounds, and comparing the power of 12,7 mm bullets and 30 mm shells is ridiculous, it's like comparing a 5,45 bullet with a 12,7 caliber bullet.

You have already chewed everything higher, but you persistently continue to bend your line. RPG is not an alternative. They have many drawbacks - limited firing range, small ammunition, premature operation in difficult terrain, in addition, cheap mass systems do not differ in accuracy, and for expensive cost of a shot, compare the cost of a machine gun. The use, as ersatz artillery is applicable in some situations, of storming a checkpoint, this is exactly the situation - the same "Bumblebee" is for this purpose. A heavy machine gun is more versatile and cheaper. And how will his armored personnel carrier, infantry fighting vehicle replace? It’s the same as saying a machine gun is better than a submachine gun — completely different costs and tactical niches.
