The Russian Foreign Ministry warned compatriots about possible problems when crossing the Ukrainian border with January 1 and 2018. This is stated in the official commentary on the department website.
Citizens of the Russian Federation intending to travel to Ukraine in the near future should take into account that when passing control at the Ukrainian border they may have problems due to new additional requirements by the State Border Service of Ukraine. In order to avoid possible provocations, we recommend, before traveling to Ukraine, to clarify the conditions and procedure for crossing the border in the diplomatic and consular institutions of Ukraine.
- said in a statement
Biometric control when foreigners cross the border of Ukraine will be introduced 1 January 2018. This procedure will be subjected to the Russians, who in most cases visit the country with personal and family visits. In addition, foreigners can only cross the border with biometric passports. According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, this is contrary to the current provision on visa-free travel.
The decision to strengthen border controls was taken by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine 10 July. The check points were supposed to be equipped with the necessary equipment by January 1 for 2018.
