At an additional plenary meeting on Thursday, the State Duma ratified the agreement with Syria "On expanding the territory of the Russian Navy's material and technical support center in the Tartus port and the visits of Russian warships to the territorial sea, inland waters and ports of the Syrian Arab Republic."

Vladimir Putin introduced a bill to parliament last week. Agreement from 18 January 2017, the year is valid 49. The document says that it is defensive in nature and not directed against other countries.

According to the agreement, Syria transfers to Russia for free use land in the port area, as well as real estate.

The order of entry of Russian warships into Syrian ports, their registration and movement of military equipment is determined. It is agreed that at the same time there can be eleven ships at Tartus, including ships with a nuclear power plant.

In accordance with the agreement, the personnel, crew members and property of the base have the privileges and immunity. The document regulates issues relating to the criminal and administrative prosecution of military personnel. It deals with the protection of the base, the use of communications and electronic warfare, the use of weapons.

The agreement is temporarily applied from the date of its signing and is valid for 49 years with the possibility of its automatic renewal for 25-year periods.
