Experts believe that strengthening the border is connected, first of all, with the need to protect the newly opened land corridor from Iran to Lebanon, through the territory of Syria. The new route is still vulnerable because it is in contact with ISIS-controlled zones in the province of Deir ez-Zor.
It is the lack of regular supply weapons and the Syrian army’s ammunition limited Tehran’s political influence over Damascus. Previously, the Iranians had to use only air transport, the possibilities of which are very poor. Now, Iran has virtually unlimited resources to ship weapons to Syria by land.
