The French authorities came to a political agreement on a referendum on the self-determination of New Caledonia in 2018, the channel reports BFMTV.

French authorities approved referendum on independence of New Caledonia

That evening (Thursday) we reached a political agreement (on a referendum), and, last but not least, we had confidence. But there is still a lot of work
- said French Prime Minister Eduard Philippe.

The independence referendum was envisaged by the agreement on the consistent decolonization of the archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, which has the status of overseas territory of France, signed in 1998.

The exact date of the referendum has not yet been determined, but it must take place no later than November 2018.

New Caledonia - a special administrative and territorial entity of France, located in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, is a group of islands in Melanesia, bordered by the economic zones of Australia, Fiji and Vanuatu. Its population is 245 thousand people, mostly Melanesians and French, the capital is the city of Noumea. In the 1980-90s, mass demonstrations took place in the country demanding independence.

I don’t think the reef coast is of any particular interest to the Navy, but the economy will not be abandoned:
The economy of New Caledonia is based on nickel mining. A substantial income comes from tourism, as well as financial subsidies from France.
Industries: nickel and iron mining, non-ferrous metallurgy, fishing.
Minerals: deposits of nickel (25% of the world's proven reserves) and iron. In addition, there are deposits of ores of chromium, cobalt, manganese, silver, gold, lead, copper.
In agriculture, coffee trees, coconut palms, potatoes, sunflowers, wheat, corn, yams, taro, sweet potatoes, and cassava are grown. Cattle and pigs, goats, sheep and horses are bred.
Exports (2,207 billion dollars to 2014) - ferronickel, nickel ore, fish.
The main buyers are China 31,7%, Japan 15,1%, South Korea 10,6%, Australia 8%, France 7,1%, Belgium 5,1% (2015).
Import (4,4 billion dollars in 2014) - machinery and equipment, fuel, chemicals, food.
        The main suppliers are France 35%, Australia 11,3%, South Korea 8,5%, Singapore 5,3%, Malaysia 5,2%, China 4,4% (2015). [1]

I don’t think so. They just understand that they will not separate anywhere. And Catalonia would not have declared independence if it had been smarter in Madrid. The French, in this sense, well done, learn from the mistakes of others.

The question is the type of ownership of these industries. Whoever gets the profit from all these riches in their pocket. If a private owner, then the economy of New Caledonia does not shine. For example, take Africa, where in the 50s and 70s, everyone together gained independence. The richest continent, but something like prosperity is not observed there. It seems to me that most Caledonians, like fishing, raising sweet potatoes, raising goats, will continue to do this, but with a "proud and independent" look. lol

Caledonia is very far away and doesn’t bring anything to the budget of France; therefore, their independence will drive.

The French followed the path of the British, so as not to be left with problems, like the Spaniards.

Now let's see how these lovers of non-addiction will themselves support themselves. After all, the economy of New Caledonia is one of the largest in the world. laughing And the new Caledonians, did not say that they feed the whole of France? laughing

The French, taking into account the Spanish experience, did the right thing - and allowed and created a platform for negotiations. Therefore, everything will probably be decided as planned by France.

They can, when they want, disperse beautifully. The Faroe Islands are a vivid example! And East Timor fought for its independence for 25 years!

the protectorate of France will definitely remain ... formally, maybe they will recognize independence, but in fact nothing will change -
