The main battle tank T-90M. Technical details of the project

51
In early September, the first open demonstration of a promising main combat tank T-90M. Specialists, and then the general public, were able to see the new type of prototype machine, as well as learn its main tactical and technical characteristics. At the same time, the bulk of information about the project, affecting methods for improving the characteristics and expanding capabilities, was not announced until recently. A few days ago, a representative of the Ministry of Defense revealed certain features of a promising project.

Last week, Army Standard magazine published an interview with Deputy Minister of Defense Dmitry Bulgakov; The theme of this material was the development of domestic armored combat vehicles, including the newest project T-90M. The Deputy Minister revealed the main features of the perspective tank, and also told what changes were made to the existing structure. Thus, now specialists and amateurs of technology have the opportunity to evaluate innovations not only in the area of the exterior, but also in terms of internal equipment. D. Bulgakov also spoke about the current work under the new project.

The first published image of the tank T-90M

According to the Deputy Minister of Defense, the currently updated T-90M type tank is being tested, to confirm the real characteristics and capabilities. When creating the project, everything possible was done to make full use of the existing modernization potential. As a result, it was possible to maximize the combat qualities of the machine through the use of certain new components and assemblies.

According to previously published and new data, the T-90M project envisages the use of a mass of ready-made units and devices previously created for a base modification tank. At the same time, completely new systems of one kind or another, which are necessary for solving certain tasks and increasing the basic characteristics, are mounted on them. As a result, the T-90M tank has a significant external and technical similarity with the previous T-90, but has higher performance and enhanced capabilities.

One of the goals of the T-90M project was to enhance protection. Available armor supplemented with new overhead elements. The frontal projection and a significant part of the sides are covered with the “Relic” dynamic protection blocks. The aft elements of the hull, providing protection for the engine compartment, are additionally closed with lattice screens. A mesh screen is mounted along the perimeter of the tower, with a gain at the intersections of the filaments. Metal armor, dynamic protection and screens can also be supplemented by a complex of active protection.

When creating a complex of additional protective equipment, features of previous projects were taken into account. This resulted in a certain reduction in the weakened zones of additional protection, which positively affected the overall survivability of the equipment. In combination with active protection, all this should give a significant increase in real efficiency.

Mobility measures taken. To improve these characteristics, it is proposed to use the new B-92C2 engine with 1000 horsepower. The engine is equipped with a programmable preheater, which starts at low temperatures. The project also involves the use of a diesel generator set to power electrical appliances when the main engine is off.

The workplace of the driver is located a new display complex. The control equipment has the functions of monitoring the technical condition of the power plant as a whole and its individual systems. Also, the driver's work is somewhat simplified by installing a rear view camera.

Receiving new equipment, the T-90M tank retains the main components of the weapon system. The main weapons The armored car is a 125-mm smooth-bore gun launcher 2A46М-4. This system is able to use all existing tank ammunition, and is also used with the 9K119 "Reflex" guided weapon system. The project also provides for the use of a coiled PKTM machine gun with a caliber 7,62 mm and an anti-aircraft 12,7-mm NSV.

The smooth-bore gun in the new project does not undergo any noticeable changes, but it is completed with an improved automatic loader. The latter was modified in accordance with the need to use advanced armor-piercing sabots projectiles. At the same time, full compatibility with old types of ammunition is maintained.

Experienced tank on display in early September

The fire control system was reworked and supplemented with new devices. To increase the informational awareness of the crew, an external video surveillance system is used. A set of video cameras provides tracking of the entire surrounding space. The commander now has a multi-channel panoramic sight at his disposal, which ensures target search and weapon guidance at any time of the day.

In view of current trends and challenges, the T-90M tank received a remote-controlled combat module for an anti-aircraft machine gun. Large-caliber NSV is mounted on a mobile unit with mechanical drives controlled from crew consoles. To control the combat module in the OMS there is a separate channel.

In the course of the modernization, the tank receives a software-technical communication complex, with the help of which the machine is integrated into the automated tactical control system. This increases the efficiency of the tank as part of the unit. First of all, the exchange of data with other combat vehicles and command is simplified.

Also, according to D. Bulgakov, the T-90M project provides for the use of a number of other innovations of one kind or another. However, the representative of the military department did not specify which particular improvements are being discussed in this case.

The Deputy Minister believes that the expected serial modernization of existing T-90 family tanks under the T-90M project will lead to noticeable positive consequences for armored units. In his opinion, equipping the ground forces with modernized T-90M tanks will ensure, at a minimum, parity with foreign armies. A similar situation will persist during the future transition period, up to the deployment of mass production of promising next-generation T-14 Armata tanks.

***

Over the past few months, the military has made the T-90M project a "hero" of fresh News. So, at the end of August this year, during the Army-2017 international military-technical forum, the Ministry of Defense signed several major contracts for the construction and modernization of armored combat vehicles. One of such agreements stipulated serial modernization of the existing T-90 tanks under the project with the letter "M".

In early September, celebrations on the Day of the Tankman were held at the 33 Combined Range Training Ground in the Leningrad Region. During this holiday, the first open demonstration of several updated tanks, including an experienced T-90M, took place. A sign was presented with basic information about the car, but some of the information was not announced then.

Also at the beginning of autumn, Lieutenant-General Alexander Shevchenko, Chief of the Main Armored Directorate, said that the T-90M tank was developed as part of the Breakthrough-3 development work. By that time, an experienced armored vehicle had time to enter state tests. At the same time, preparations were under way for testing another renewed machine, the T-80BVM.

The hull and the tower received a variety of additional means of protection.

According to the latest statements of the Deputy Minister of Defense D. Bulgakov, published by the Army Standard, the tests of the T-90М are currently ongoing. When it will be possible to complete the required checks - until it is specified. At the same time, however, a contract for the future serial production of new equipment was already signed. Details of the contract from 24 August have not yet been disclosed. There is reason to believe that while it is a question of modernizing several dozen tanks, with the help of which it will be possible to re-equip at least one battalion.

According to various sources, the serial production of T-90M tanks and other armored vehicles of recent projects will be carried out without the construction of new vehicles. Deliveries will be carried out based on the results of repair and modernization of the main tanks taken from the combat units of the ground forces. Currently, the Russian army has a significant number of tanks of several types, some of which need repair. Restoration of technical readiness will be accompanied by the replacement of certain units. A similar approach is already used in the framework of the T-72B3 project and fully justified itself. Now it seems to be used in upgrading other types of armored vehicles.

Earlier, during the exhibition "Army-2017", the leadership of the Ministry of Defense announced new plans for the development of the fleet of armored vehicles. According to officials, the existing tanks, such as the T-90, still retain a large modernization potential, and also did not have time to waste all their resources. As a result, repairs and upgrades will not only keep this equipment in service, but also bring its potential to a level that meets the requirements of the times. Thus, T-90M and other upgraded tanks will be able to remain in service until the appearance of a sufficient number of promising T-14. Due to this, it will be possible to obtain the desired combat capability of the troops at an acceptable cost for fleet renewal.

According to recent reports, the Ministry of Defense has already ordered the first batch of upgraded T-90M tanks. At the same time, a prototype of such a machine is still at the test site and participates in state trials. Thus, the customer has already decided the fate of the project, although he still does not specify the dates for the start of a serial restructuring of the existing tanks. The number of necessary equipment was also not announced. According to well-known estimates, the first batch of upgraded machines will not be very large. In the future, however, a full-fledged mass update of equipment will be launched.

With the help of several projects for the modernization of the main tanks of various types, including the T-90M program, it is planned to seriously upgrade the fleet of armored vehicles of the ground forces, which will be accompanied by an increase in their potential. The first projects of this kind have already reached the serial restructuring of armored vehicles, while new ones are still at the testing stage. However, the necessary checks will be completed in the near future, after which the army will receive serial equipment of new types.

The large-caliber NSV is mounted on a mobile installation with mechanical drives controlled from crew remotes.

What is it like? In my understanding, a mechanical drive is a set of levers, rods, cardan gears, etc. That is, the crew twists the handwheels inside takna and through a mechanical transmission induces a large-caliber NSV. What does the remote control have to do with it? Or does it mean an electromechanical drive?
The grid around the tower also looks somewhat flimsy. During operation, it can fly off with enviable constancy when a tank passes through a forest belt. But the log was well hung on the starboard side. In the stern, it did not give any protection, but here at least a little bit, but it will protect. The main thing is that this log does not cling to urban development.

If I am not mistaken, at first there was an option with metal plates, then a grid appeared instead of plates.
Probably more effective than a grid; otherwise there is no point in exchanging one for another. For the price, both options are unlikely to differ significantly.

In general, in my opinion, they could have installed this T-72 with this kit during modernization. After all, it is he who is our main tank in the army.

t-34-1942 and t34-85 in combat capabilities are much more different than t72 - t90, just then the dido brain was present, so that in the framework of the current mainstream to name 34-85 - t340 - stalin is a killer of demons, and a couple of dozens of adiks cars through netralov did not sell, the same difference.

seriously though the T90 differs fundamentally from the T72 it’s not very clear to me, well, modification, well, they stuck new systems, then what you want to say, the earlier models T72 can’t reach the T90 with modernization, but it’s easy, the question is money.

Well, it should not be completely clear: military secret equipment, however ... wink
But there are differences and, as they said in the old days, "something very significant."
Firstly, the manufacturing technology of the armored parts of the hull, the materials used for this, the composition of the composite armor.
Armor resistance increases to 100% (according to open sources, no one will report the true parameters to you).
This is the basis, but also such “trifles” as the new MSA, modernized ammunition, closed-type modular fire regiments, the new DZ, and communications increase combat capabilities significantly.
But I would not like to hear about them, but about simpler, but "fundamental" things
          1. There were persistent rumors about the use of a unified MTO block type on the T-90M.
The long-overdue idea to combine diesel engine V-92, guitar, oil tanks on one base, and use quick-disconnect couplings in lubrication and cooling systems.
          2. It would also be nice to separate the front and rear groups of fuel tanks from the control and combat compartments with a strong armored partition - this, in combination with an effective PPO system, would significantly reduce the fire hazard in case of combat damage.
But this article is silent about this, although these things do not represent any special secrets.

And in the future, it was the T-90 that bought the production license. The differences are mass. It makes no sense to list here - see TTX.

For the 2A82 gun, an armor-piercing sub-caliber projectile (BPS) was created in the framework of the Vakuum R&D. An experimental batch was made, but the matter did not go further. In connection with the modernization of the gun for "Almaty" had to open a new OCD - "Vacuum-1." A new projectile with a length of 900 mm was designed. With a depleted uranium core with composite ceramic additives. With a shirt made of fusible material. And with the frontal cap, which plays the role, relatively speaking, of a sort of “sucker”, which allows to increase the angle of interaction of the “crowbar” with the armor of the tank being hit.

Everything went according to plan. However, a year and a half ago there was information that the release of armor-piercing shells for a caliber of 125 mm was delayed. The General Director of the Uralvagonzavod complained that the requirements for shooting tests are constantly growing. “It can all turn into infinity,” he says. “And we would like the products to enter the troops as early as possible.” It is assumed that the tanks will go into service this or next year.

The claimed characteristics of the BPS "Vacuum-1" are high. The rod is capable of piercing one meter of homogeneous armor. The German gun company "Rheinmetall" this figure is 80 centimeters.

But the shells are still not unitary. Separate shells charges.
And how can the projectile be lengthened?
In unitary ones, it is deeply buried in the sleeve. Therefore, up to 85 cm of length can be reached.
scrap itself. The Soviet had 55 cm.

Yes, the barrel is moved forward, the camera is lengthened, the AZ racks are longer, the tray on the hand is redone a little, in short everything is as usual, the unitary will not be introduced, except perhaps with the transition to a new caliber, which again is very unlikely to happen.
boasted that the elongation of new shells for armature can be 800mm - only no one has seen them yet.

shell production now feels almost better than any other, which means without Soviet stockpiles it’s impossible to build up shells on a mob.

Expected more! Where is the new 2A82 gun firing new uranium BOPSs with armor penetration greater than 900 mm? Shells like Lead were relevant for the late 90s and early 2000s, but today they are unlikely to be able to hit Abrams M1A2 SEP.v3 or Leopard-2A7 “in the forehead,” which will make life difficult for tankers. Why do they put an engine with a capacity of only 1000 hp, even if the Uplot tank has an engine capacity of 1200 hp? With a new tank weighing about 50 tons, the specific power will be about 20 hp / t, which will bring the T-90M closer to the British Challenger-2, which obviously cannot be called fast. Move on. Where, your mother, KAZ ??? Tankers are not cannon fodder to be substituted for the subsonic Javelins and Spikes, not to mention the M829E4 BOPs! And the last - Where is the gunner’s separate thermal imaging sight, independent of the commander’s, and high-quality DBM with two-plane stabilization ?!
PS This modernization is inferior to T-90AM in a number of parameters, which is very offensive for a great tank-building power. It turns out that we are selling the best to foreigners, and we are fighting for T-72B3 and T-90А.

The absence of KAZ is an indisputable “cant”; I agree, as with many others. But comparisons with the enemy’s BTT - why? Will Alabino duel face-to-face? Our tank is a priori “imprisoned” for something else. The engine is sufficient for the same tasks. But KAZ - yes, it is necessary to deliver.

Bullshit, in terms of their combat capabilities, these are two completely different tanks.

You're right. Outwardly, of course, there are similarities, but the composition of the armor and the filling are very different.

The composition of the armor and the filling is clear that they are different! But after all, the T72B3 is the same T-90, but with a different tower for armoring (or rather, it is as close as possible to 90, although it is made a bit clumsily). It was simply renamed in 92 by the decision of Yeltsin, well, he really wanted Russia to have its own tank, supposedly not a soviet .... Also with M1 and M1A2 sep .... The same tank, but with additives. After all, the T90M, despite the modernization, does not cease to be the T90, so why not admit that 90 is a redone 72!

Well, yes, they just changed the cast turret to a welded one (larger), changed the frontal armor filling, changed the dynamic protection, filled the tank with different electronics, another FCS, another engine, another gun, an conveyor with ammunition on the sides covered with armor. And everything else is the same T-72.

Then, with such logic, the T-72A is not the T-72 and the T-72B is also no longer the T-72, because there also appeared a DZ and a different gun (or rather a gun-launcher) and engines and FCS .... will we continue the logic? And about M1A1, I’m generally silent, in the same place they generally changed the caliber!

the logic here is simple T90 - a type of “non-Soviet” tank, an autonomous Russian megatank surpassing all Soviet developments by several times, clearly showing the superiority of democratic Russia to a terrible totalitarian scoop in which even tanks could not do it.
so no soviet t72, only democratic t90 super tanks

Actually, the next iteration of the tanks after the T72-T80 should have been a hammer or a similar device with 152mm, because even then everyone could already understand that 125mm did not give the previous advantages.

What I wrote above ... And by the way, here someone (too lazy to look) wrote about the fact that the Indians bought not the T-72, but the T-90, and they are collecting it under license. How the T-72 is not produced from the mid-90s! Bought what happened! And they did not buy a European or an American just because the USSR built a plant for them for the T-72 and they collected them + the nomenclature of old ammunition in the T-90 is climbing, they could not buy a Chinese for political reasons ...

Guys, what's the difference what kind of canned food it is, if any tank is theoretically turned into a bastard, together with a crew, they say even tanks are outdated in a modern war ....

Are the tanks "obsolete"? Name the country, the army, where they were abandoned and written off as an unnecessary kind of troops? .. there will simply be a transition to an unmanned version, as on the Uranus project

Is there an armata? And where is she? 10 pieces for parades? We and the T-90 did not even become the main battle tank for 25 years. Only the "court" parts are equipped

which you are nevertheless incomprehensible: the main thing is to crow, and there, though do not dawn.
Elections on the nose ... the guarantor must be re-elected again .. and you - somewhere, where is this? Where is the money, huh?
Yes, money must be reserved for the oligarchs who are offended by Trump ... This is the most important task!
And you all tanks, come on tanks. They say there’s nothing to defend their homeland .... You argue politically, chesslovo.

There is an improved AZ - shells of large elongation are not announced, against the background of Amer segment e4 crowbars, everything is already very dumbly seen.

This refers to BOPS "Lead", under it, the AZ was modernized and a new gun was installed.
