Rukban refugee camp - on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe
A humanitarian disaster is brewing in the area of the American base Tan-Tanf on the border of Syria and Jordan. About 60 thousands of refugees from the Rukban camp are under the threat of epidemics and mass deprivations.
In the area of the so-called 55-kilometer security zone of Al-Tanf, where the American military base is located, a real humanitarian catastrophe will soon come. The fact is that the Rukban refugee camp, located in the immediate vicinity of the military base, has long enjoyed dubious fame among its unwitting guests. The fact is that the leadership of the camp, from among the refugees themselves, is involved in corrupt schemes. According to the few people who managed to leave its borders, the self-proclaimed Rukban administration takes large bribes to take people to the territory of Jordan or even just leave the camp in the direction of peaceful areas of the Syrian Arab Republic.
“According to the most minimal estimates, there are today more than 60 thousand women and children from Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor, to whom the Americans do not allow humanitarian convoys either from the Syrian government, or from Jordan, or from the UN and other international organizations. Rukbana refugees today are essentially hostages, or rather, a living shield of the American base, ”Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov spoke at a briefing with the media.
Note that according to the Russian military representative, the illegal deployment of the US military base on the Syrian-Jordanian border in April 2017 was publicly justified by the “need to conduct operations against ISIS”. However, for the six months of the existence of this base, it is not known about a single operation of the Americans against ISIS.
In addition, hunger reigns in the camp itself, basic sanitary conditions are absent, and women and children cannot receive qualified medical assistance. The United States, in turn, does not allow any humanitarian aid into the territory of Rukban. All this against the background of the fact that American instructors are training military specialists for supposedly moderate opposition. In fact, within the camp, an active recruitment of people into the ranks of illegal armed groups is taking place in parallel. But the leadership of "Rukban" on all this, frankly, do not care. After putting on stream the process of illegally leaving the camp and crossing the border by Jordan refugees, the Rukban administration is simply deceiving its American “patrons”, trying to make money on everything.
Here are just a hunt for ordinary people, who have fallen into such a frankly difficult life situation, to side with the illegal armed formations and again put their lives at risk of being destroyed by government forces? Like the American instructors, it hardly seems attractive to be, at best, simply driven out by rebellious refugees from the territory of Al-Tanf. In the meantime, the notorious 55 kilometer security zone under the US guarantor remains a “black hole” on the map of Syria, such a kind of breeding ground for human grief, corruption and extremism, which the international coalition led by Washington is “officially” fighting.
