By 2019, the American fleet will receive the first prototypes of autonomous submarines. According to the magazine Popular Mechanics, the US Navy Command signed contracts with Boeing and Lockheed Martin to create fully-functional prototypes for the Orca Extra-Large Unmanned Underwater vehicle (XLUUV) project.

Under the terms of the contracts, Lockheed Martin will receive $ 43,2 million, Boeing $ $ 42,3 million. For these funds, contractors have committed themselves to preparing fully functional prototypes of submarines operating in standalone mode for 2019.

US Navy ordered the development of autonomous submarines

As part of the XLUUV program, US military sailors plan to receive underwater Dronescapable of being under water for months and performing tasks offline. At the same time, a lot of requirements are put forward for future prototypes, the key of which is the presence of a compartment with a volume of at least 9 m3, capable of accommodating reconnaissance equipment or weapons. In addition, submarinesRobots must cover at least 2000 nautical miles without refueling or recharging (depending on engine type).
In June of this year, Boeing Corporation began testing the Echo Voyager submersible, created under the XLUUV project. According to the developers, the drone with a length of 15,5 m can stay for months on the high seas, carrying out reconnaissance and combat missions in fully automatic mode.

In 2019, the US Navy command will determine the winner of the tender for the XLUUV project. The company, which will present the best underwater drone, will receive a contract for the construction of five prototypes of submarines, which will be tested in 2020. "Warspot".

If it doesn’t come, then it’s coming. But without a simple guy from the infantry they will not manage for a long time.

what worries me more is the “control of the hardware in fully automatic mode.” and if there’s some kind of “phase shift” in email. the brain of this miracle?

I do not touch on the topic of production and progressive development. firstly, the most advanced flying drones are exclusively reconnaissance. the right to use weapons in combat drones is for the operator so far. they are not specified here, in the article, who decides on the attack during the “long combat duty in the fully automatic control mode” is what interests me.

They called the drone Killer Whale (Orca).
Reconnaissance of noise, setting up antennas, mining / demining, goes on a mission from the pier, not from the ship. It can attack surface ships, it can lure enemy submarines to its own submarine, which is in ambush. 5 prototypes will be made and tested in 2020.
