September 2 is celebrated on the Day of the Russian Guard. This holiday is set to 22 December 2000 by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the 300 jubilee of the Russian Guard (Presidential Decree No. 2032 of 22 December 2000 of the Year “On the Establishment of the Day of the Russian Guard”).
The Russian Imperial Guard was established at the beginning of the reign of Peter the Great of the Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky regiments. In 1918, it was dissolved, and re-created during the Great Patriotic War (1941 — 1945). The four rifle divisions that distinguished themselves near Smolensk in 1941 by order of I. Stalin received the name of the Guards. In September of the same year, the concept of the “Guards unit” was introduced in the Red Army.
The title of "Guards" was assigned to military units, ships, formations and unions of the Soviet Armed Forces, who distinguished themselves in battles during the Great Patriotic War. The military unit received the Guards flag, and the personnel - the Guards rank and badge.
The Guard of modern Russia, which is part of the Armed Forces of Russia, is: the Guards tank Kantemirov’s division, Taman’s guards motorized rifle division, Carpathian-Berlin divisions of the Guards motorized rifle division, Sevastopol brigade, separate motorized rifle guards, airborne regiments, naval guards and ships, and army and air force guards.
