As the RIA News, the official representative of the head of EU diplomacy in a special communique demanded the release of the deputy head of the Russian Federation "Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people"(banned in Russia organization) Ahtem Chiygoz and the removal of charges from another deputy chairman of the organization Ilmi Umerov.
Russian justice Chiygoz was found guilty of organizing riots outside the building of the Crimean parliament in February 2014, eight years of a general regime colony were appointed as punishment. The defense of the convict is going to appeal this verdict and seek the extradition of Chiygoz to Ukraine. His "colleague" Umerov is accused of public appeals and actions aimed at changing the territorial integrity of Russia.
The head of the so-called "Mejlis" Refat Chubarov
The European Union constantly followed Mr. Chiygoz’s case and insisted on his release. This call we repeat today. The ban on the activities of the Mejlis, its self-governing body and the persecution of its leaders is a serious and unacceptable violation of their rights. We look forward to the immediate removal of the charges against another deputy chairman of the Mejlis, Mr. Ilmi Umerov, and recall our long-standing position that all illegally detained citizens of Ukraine on the Crimean peninsula and in the Russian Federation should be immediately released.
- stated in the designated communique.
