Artillery installation or as it was also called, the launcher of active projectiles of self-propelled type was designed according to the scheme of a closed pipe. Works on designing ACS begin in 1963, in OKB-9 of Sverdlovsk Artillery Plant No. 9. Supervised design work F.Petrov. The 1,13,24,61,125 research institutes were also involved in the design of this ACS. A number of other plants and design bureau also participated in the development. Sverdlovsk OKB-9 for a couple of years managed to make a valid layout of the installation D-80 in tracked and wheeled versions using the scale 1: 10. Layouts were created primarily to protect the project ACS with D-80 in MOP and GRAU. The project laid the possibility of migrating the launcher to surface ships. Protected avanproekt in May 1965 of the year. The competitor of the SAU project is the Luna-M project. ORT "Luna-M" was created as a system of percussion type divisional level. In 1968, the Volgograd Barricades received an order for the production of the pipe and the breech part of the D-80 cannon. But for several reasons, production of D-80 parts is stopped after a few months. Real samples of ACS were not created. The production of only a ball valve for an instrument, which should have been tested at the site near the village of Krasnoe, was completely completed. A little later, the revised project receives the working title D-80С, but it also did not go into production, the project is not accepted for development. End of 1969 of the year. The design office offers another modification project. He receives the working title of D-80-2, the design of which began to resemble the M-240 mortar.

- The first version of the ACS - D-80. It was supposed to install a gun on the chassis ZIL-135L. Above the cab was the chassis of the rotating execution of a special shop on the 4 ammunition for loading the gun from the muzzle side. The barrel of the gun provided a powerful muzzle brake, the effectiveness of which was 58 percent. The breech of the cannon rested against the ground with a base plate (mortar type of execution). Exactly the same chassis had SPU D-110K from OTR "Onega". The gun was provided with recoil devices with a long recoil stroke. Loading and unloading occurred with the help of special equipment. Loading a separate type - the first was the projectile, followed by a charge of the expelling type. The guidance was carried out using a hydraulic device powered by the main engine. There was also a manual drive. Mechanical sight taken from howitzer caliber 122 mm D-30. For the delivery of ammunition to the SAU planned to create a transport charging machine, on the same type of chassis. The machine was supposed to provide a supply of 11 ARS.
- length - 12.5 meters;
- width - 3.2 meters;
- height 3.7 meter;
- travel speed up to 60 km / h;

Mega weapons - Domestic self-propelled guns caliber 535 mm

- The second version of the ACS - D-80С. The gun is mounted on the MT-T tracked chassis. The option proposed by the Kharkov plant engineering. The tool of this ACS breech-loading performance.

- The last version of the ACS - D-80-2. The gun gets the MT-LB chassis. The gun without a powerful muzzle brake, the fire should be made with the emphasis in the ground of the bottom of the ACS. The gun was made according to the recoilless scheme, the breech with the bolt had an emphasis on the massive pallet. However, the creation of a modern OTRK “Tochka” completely puts an end to the project 535 mm SAU.

    It is not entirely clear why it was created at all. Except for firing tactical nuclear weapons. And so there will be no rate of fire, for charging, as I understand it, we need a separate car. In the 63rd, it should have been clear that such a machine has no prospects.

      Such tools were created for psychological impact.

        Maybe then enlighten, if not as an act of intimidation, then why did the giant guns be created?

        Strategic aviation is mainly intended for psychological impact.

      For firing special ammunition, of course! With such a caliber, the projectile weight is too small, it is clear that the warhead is nuclear! For comparison, a 406mm (16-inch) caliber gun fires a 1250 kg shell !!!

      Firing range of 65 km! That's why, in order to hit the enemy out of the reach of his artillery, but probably then with the development of missile weapons, I think this project was considered not promising ...

    That was pleased with the KVO indication ... In the description of modern artillery systems it is not often found ... but this is practically the main parameter ... And the cost of artillery and rocket shots differs by an order of magnitude ... Well, reloading the launcher longer than the gun ... so the idea is interesting ... but they cut it off because of Nikita ... it really hurt him to like the rockets ... then they cut a lot of things ...

    Targets for such installations would be found. And if you create an adjustable shell, then this system could become relevant today in local conflicts and in the destruction of terrorist bases in the North Caucasus. For example, a large-caliber self-propelled mortar system TULIPAN proved its effectiveness in storming Grozny .

        at the expense of the "daredevil", however, as I already wrote, an ordinary mine of this caliber is not a gift, another question is the difference in the cost of the Tulip and the usual M240? Or Tulip and Acacia - also impressive

    damn here is a monster. Thank God they didn’t accept it. Now artillery and missiles have found a balance and are developing in their niches.

    For those who do not know, in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, according to the organizational staff structure, there is artillery subordinate to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief (that is, the President), and such artillery also includes barreled artillery, which by itself speaks of its firepower and strategic purpose.
    So such artillery systems are in service, but I find it difficult to explain which ones.

      Of the currently armed, the heaviest of the barreled artillery, if I am not mistaken, is the 203-mm self-propelled guns Peony.

    As a technical project, it’s very interesting, but to design SUCH not in the 40-50s, but in the 60s, when rocketry was already sufficiently developed - this is rather the result of not a thought process, but the result of lobbying in Moscow :)

    From the point of view of engineering and mechanics, and in truth, an interesting idea (I completely agree with AlexMH) The practical need for such systems is more than controversial ...

    That pleased the indication of the Quo ...

    In the SVL artillery artillery, KVO is not taken into account, but derivation is taken into account, because, unlike a rocket, a projectile fired from a gun’s barrel rotates in flight, regardless of whether the rifled or cold-bore gun’s barrel. Googling there you will find a more detailed description of these phenomena.

    In those years, this also had a right to exist, but today it is unlikely. Although remotely and strongly modified, we can talk about continuing the evolution of such a technique into the railgun that has appeared (again, not with us). Once again I emphasize my words - remotely and greatly modified.

    Delivery of card charge to the rear is interesting. 450kg of buckshot with a diameter of 10mm would have a phenomenal psychological effect. I’ll even fantasize: a volley of 6-8 guns.
