Successful tests of AGM-114R Hellfire ATGM took place.

Lockheed Martin announced the success of a third fire test of the AGM-114R Hellfire anti-tank missile.

The tests were carried out using a ground launcher configured to simulate the launch from an unmanned aerial vehicle.

The “R” version of the AGM-114 missile is equipped with a multipurpose warhead, which allows effective firing at all types of targets, for the destruction of which laser-guided missiles are currently being used.
In tests conducted at the Eglin air force base (Florida), a missile equipped with a multipurpose warhead hit the target, which is the Patton-60 M-2 tank at a distance of 6,4 km. Thus, the ability to use AGM-114R against heavy armored vehicles has been demonstrated.

Successful tests of AGM-114R Hellfire ATGM took place. The ATGM was launched in the “capture after launch” mode along a hinged path to simulate the launch from the UAV. At the initial part of the flight trajectory, an inertial measuring unit and target designation data were used. Guidance on the final segment was carried out using a ground-based laser target designator. The rocket successfully detected the laser spot and hit the target within a few inches of it.

The AGM-114R version can be launched at high altitudes, which increases the angle of collision with the target, reduces visibility and increases the damaging effect, and also expands the options for hitting the target. The new inertial measuring unit allows the use of AGM-114R on targets at the back of the course without the need to turn the aircraft. According to the developers, one of the advantages of the AGM-114R is the fact that the operator can choose the type of detonation of the warhead during the flight.
Lockheed Martin plans to begin shipping AGM-114R serial samples in 2012.
