Japanese Ministry of Defense requested a record military budget
It asks to increase defense spending by 2,5% compared with the current year - up to 5,25 trillion yen (about $ 47,8 billion).
Part of the budget is expected to go for the purchase of Aegis Ashore ground-based missile defense systems (ABM) from the United States. According to experts, to protect the entire territory of Japan from a possible missile strike or the fall of a ballistic missile, two such installations are enough, each of which costs about 80 billion yen (about $ 728 million), reports TASS
Also, about 67 billion yen ($ 609 million) will be spent on the acquisition of upgraded PAC-3 MSE complexes, whose radius is twice as large as that of the PAC-3, as well as the new SM-3 Block IIA sea-based interceptor missiles.
Japan currently has a two-tier missile defense system. Equipped with Aegis systems, the ships are armed with SM-3 interceptor missiles, which must shoot down a ballistic missile in the middle of its trajectory. If this fails, the second level of the missile defense system will be activated using PAC-3, which should intercept the missile at the final stage of its flight. The range of this system does not exceed several tens of kilometers.
Japan has been raising defense spending for several years in a row due to the unstable situation in the region, in particular on the Korean Peninsula. The country's military budget for the 2017 fiscal year amounted to 5,13 trillion yen (almost $ 44 billion).
