Upgrading fleet of tanks: modernized T-90, “Almaty” and BMPT

71
Currently, the Russian defense industry, carrying out a number of existing orders, is carrying out repairs and modernization of several types of available armored vehicles. One of the results of such work should be a significant renewal of the park tanks T-72 family, a significant part of which should now correspond to the new T-72B3 project. However, until recently, the purchase of new tanks of existing models or their updated versions was not planned. However, according to recent reports, the Russian military has again expressed a desire to receive tanks of new construction.

The last week the international military-technical forum “Army-2017” became a platform not only for demonstrating the latest developments of the defense industry. During this event, important announcements were also made and new contracts of one kind or another were signed. So, 24 of August, the Ministry of Defense and Uralvagonzavod Scientific and Production Corporation signed several agreements on carrying out certain works, or on the construction and supply of the required equipment. The total value of five contracts exceeded 24 billion rubles.

According to officials, in the foreseeable future, the Uralvagonzavod research and production complex should continue to repair and upgrade the existing armored vehicles. At the same time, it will have to re-launch the production of some types of equipment, as well as master the serial production of other samples. According to the results of the implementation of all new contracts, the army will have to receive a significant number of tanks and other armored vehicles of a number of modern types.

Tank T-72B3 version 2016.

In accordance with the new contracts, the specialists of Uralvagonzavod will again be engaged in the repair and renovation of armored vehicles operated by the troops. Serial main tanks of T-72B, T-80BV and T-90 types will be sent for overhaul. Similar work has already been carried out under previous contracts, and one of their results was the emergence of a significant number of upgraded combat vehicles, differing from base tanks in higher technical, operational and combat characteristics.

Reportedly, the recovery process will be available tanks of three types. The number of cars that will have to be repaired has not yet been clarified. Available information on previous similar contracts suggest that in the foreseeable future, Uralvagonzavod will repair up to several hundred armored vehicles.

Another contract, signed during the “Army-2017”, is intended to upgrade the fleet of T-90 family tanks. It should be noted that this is the first such agreement with 2011 of the year, when it was decided to abandon the procurement of T-90 and upgrade the armored forces by upgrading existing T-72. Since that time, specialists of NPK Uralvagonzavod have developed new designs of armored vehicles, and one of the latest developments has now become the subject of a contract.

The new agreement provides for the release of the main tank T-90M. It is a deep modernization of the previous machines of its family and therefore has a number of noticeable differences. According to previous reports on this subject, in the foreseeable future, the modernization of the new project can go through all existing tanks of old modifications. In addition, according to some data, the possibility of building new T-90M from scratch is not excluded.

The T-90A tank modernization project with the symbol T-90М was developed by the Ural Transport Engineering Design Bureau, which is part of the Uralvagonzavod corporation. It was created in the framework of the development work "Breakthrough-3" and implies a major update of the existing armored vehicles. To obtain the maximum possible characteristics and improved capabilities, it was decided to use some of the nodes and systems created earlier for the T-14 tank based on the Armata platform.

The new modernization project involves the most serious restructuring of the existing combat compartment and a radical upgrade of the onboard equipment. According to reports, the T-90M should carry an 125-mm smooth-bore gun of the type 2А82-1М, similar to that used in the T-14 project. It is proposed to control the armament complex using the Kalina fire control system. Significant processing in the new project has undergone protection armored vehicles. The updated T-90 gets enhanced dynamic protection and cutting lattice screens. It is proposed to equip it with the Afganit and Malachite complexes, created for the next generation tanks.

Available information about the new contract and information about the promising tank allows us to present the consequences of the production of such equipment. First of all, the modernization of the existing T-90A for the T-90М project will lead to a noticeable increase in the combat effectiveness of armored units and formations. In addition, unification with the T-14 tank for armaments and defense systems will, to some extent, reduce the cost of production and operation of both the upgraded T-90M and the completely new T-14. Finally, the release of tanks with the letter “M” through the repair and modernization of existing equipment will provide some savings. In the light of the high cost of any modern military equipment, this advantage will not look superfluous.

During the Army-2017 forum, the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense also announced part of their plans for the new Armat project. As it turned out, such equipment can already be produced in significant quantities, but the command still does not see the point in large orders. Deputy Defense Minister Yury Borisov said that before the 2020, the army would procure and receive X-NUMX T-100 production tanks. However, the military department is not in a hurry to start larger shipments.

The reasons for this decision lie in the potential of existing technology. According to the Deputy Minister of Defense, in their modernization potential, the existing tanks of the T-72, T-80 and T-90 families are not inferior to the leading armored vehicles. In this regard, before the 2020-22, the armed forces intend to focus on the existing technology. At the same time, the promising T-14 tank, built on the basis of the unified Armata platform, will be a "trump card" that the army can "play" at any time. Yu. Borisov also noted that, together with the newest tanks, ground forces will have a noticeable advantage over the likely adversary.

The first published image of the tank T-90M

24 August also signed another contract for the supply of armored combat vehicles of the new model. After many years of disputes and expectations, it was decided to adopt a combat vehicle supporting tanks BMPT "Terminator". The first project of this family appeared quite a long time ago, but for certain reasons, the Russian army did not begin to adopt such equipment. At the same time, several foreign countries showed interest in such equipment, after which an agreement was signed on the supply of serial machines. With considerable delay, the Russian Ministry of Defense also ordered such equipment.

For some reason, the military department decided not to disclose the details of the new order. The number of ordered tank support vehicles is not reported. Also, the military did not specify which of the modifications BMPT will have to go into service. According to various estimates and according to data from unofficial sources published by the media, the first batch of "Terminators" may include at least a dozen armored vehicles. This may be a vehicle built on a modified chassis of the main battle tank T-90А. However, the official data on this issue was not announced, and therefore the production vehicles for the Russian army may have a different configuration.

To date, enterprises from the corporation "Uralvagonzavod" has developed several versions of the combat vehicle support tanks, based on different tracked chassis and different composition of weapons. This allows you to build equipment that best meets the requirements of the customer. In this case, despite all the differences, the existing modifications BMPT carry similar weapons. All of them are equipped with a full revolving turret with two 30-mm automatic cannons and launchers for four Attack guided missiles. Also provides for the installation of a machine gun and automatic grenade launchers. How exactly the BMPT Terminator will look like for the Russian ground forces is not yet specified.

Recent reports of plans for the development of the fleet of armored vehicles, the modernization of existing machines and the procurement of new models are able to show what will happen in the next few years. Contracts for the construction of a completely new technology, including the latest models, are present in the plans of the Ministry of Defense, but much attention is paid to updating the existing equipment. What is important, namely the modernization of existing combat vehicles will be the main way to update the fleet.

Over the past few years, the defense industry has completed several contracts, repairing and updating existing tanks for new projects. To date, the modernization of the project T-72B3 passed more than 1000 armored vehicles available. According to the latest reports, the upgrade of the T-72 drill and other types of tanks will continue in the foreseeable future. Due to this, the number of modern armored vehicles will increase markedly, allowing the potential of the troops to be increased without the need for relatively expensive construction of new vehicles.

According to estimates by Russian military leaders, the T-72, T-80 and T-90 families have not yet realized their full potential in the context of modernization, and therefore can be updated to obtain new results. According to current plans, the modernization of the existing equipment will continue until the beginning of the next decade. It can be assumed that the contracts signed last week will not be the last. After they are completed, the industry will be able to receive new similar orders.

In parallel with the modernization of old tanks, it is planned to prepare for the full-scale production of armored vehicles of new models. At the same time, based on considerations of economy and expediency, while the military department sees no point in mass production of the newest T-14 tanks. Until the end of the decade, only a hundred of these machines will be received. Probably, the assembly rate "Armat" will grow only at the beginning of the next decade, after the completion of the planned modernization of older tanks.

Of particular interest is the contract for the production of tank support vehicles. The first sample of the BMPT family, the “199 Object” or “Frame”, was created at the beginning of the last decade and then regularly demonstrated to potential customers or the general public. Nevertheless, the Russian army was not interested in such equipment, and Kazakhstan became its first customer. Not so long ago, the Syrian army showed interest in tank support vehicles.

Tank T-14 family "Armata"

To date, it is aware of the existence of three projects BMPT. The first involves the construction of an armored vehicle based on the T-90 tank chassis, the second uses the T-72 hull, and the third is proposed to be built on the basis of the Armata platform. Which of these options has become the subject of the order - is still unknown. The Russian army could be interested in any of the proposed modifications. In all three cases, a high degree of unification with other models of armored vehicles, including serial ones, will be provided, which will give known advantages.

At the recent military-technical forum "Army-2017", the military and defense industries signed several new contracts, the purpose of which is to upgrade the fleet of armored vehicles. The main features of these agreements show that military leaders intend to retain some approaches to the implementation of such plans, but at the same time wish to supplement them with new principles. As in the recent past, the main way to update the park will be repair and modernization of current projects. At the same time, unlike in previous years, now there is the possibility of building completely new cars, although in not too many.

Such plans will be implemented at least until the beginning of the next decade. The result of the work will be the emergence of a fairly numerous group of updated and modernized tanks with extended service life, supplemented by completely new BMPT and T-14 vehicles. This will lead to a noticeable increase in the combat capability of the ground forces with a known influence on the country's overall defense capability. It can be assumed that in the future the military and industry will begin to implement new projects and contracts, but at the moment the question of the implementation of existing plans is relevant.

What interests me more is the appearance of the heavy class in the troops in the BMP and armored personnel carriers. For to fight in the 21st century on vehicles with armor like the BT-5 is somehow not ice. And about the T-15, "Kurgan" and "boomerang" in the article is not a word. Sadness request

I saw this Kurgan on the Army ... and I perfectly understand those military specialists who sent him for revision.

So everything is bad with the "Kurgan"? However, please note that no mover occurs on the t-15 ....

Conclusion!? - “military. specialists” leave mass graves of infantry with an armor of 15 to 20 mm in the army? In conditions where the grenade launcher is not only the cook in the unit ?!))))

How much "everything is bad" with Kurganets is there - it is better to ask the military reception.
However, some time ago there was information that there were claims to Kurgan precisely in its dimensions. It really is too massive at least in vertical dimensions. Even the Boomerang seems more squat, though not by much.

Dimensions should be compensated for by the protection, you need to set DZ (Research Institute of Steel from BMP-3F) for the place of floats, and the same in front .... + KAZ is quite enough for a modern BMP.
The size depends on the size of the equipped infantryman, in the 90s it was possible to stuff 40 kg of pimples in BMP piles .... Now times have changed and the infantry is well-fed + the equipment is more overall ...

That's just his armor is hardly better than that of the standing next to Almaty ... in the version of the same BMP T-15, which again will be less overall than Kurganets;)

By the way, what is hung on it is not floats, but there is a new generation DZ, but it has positive buoyancy. Unlike the protection that was used on the BMP-2, which lost its buoyancy when attaching additional protection, it lost.

Rather, creations such as the T-15 and Kurganets can become "mass graves" if anyone takes the trouble of sending unhurried infantry to them next to the tanks. The equipment of such KAZ vehicles also raises doubts about the operation of systems when dismounting their infantry. Finally, if the BMP concept was originally born in the image of a universal, maneuverable machine capable of performing the function of a light tank, a heavy BMP loses all the qualities and the very meaning of this concept. In the battle formations of tanks, as a specialized fire support is much more effective than BMPT, and as an infantry vehicle on the battlefield with enhanced protection, it is a heavy armored personnel carrier. BMPTs and heavy APCs, already specialized in the functions of the machine, could do what they try to do in one heavy infantry fighting vehicle, losing both the classic universal infantry fighting vehicle, and specialized BMPTs and heavy APCs, in which a single tank base could be used, for example , T-90 tank, and BMPT with armored personnel carriers (such as BMO-T), all on one tank base. As for such mastodons as "Kurganets", T-15, and "Boomerang", it is rather a police, counterguerrilla equipment for special operations against militants, which will bring little benefit in a war against a full-fledged army. Otherwise, I fully agree with the opinion of Alexei.
so that tanks (and armored personnel carriers, etc.) are different, tanks are important.

Heavy class machines, of course, are needed, but they are not capable of performing the whole range of tasks.
Thoughts that one can “shy away” from the fire with 100% reliability in them are an illusion of lovers of computer games.
Appropriate firepower will be used on "heavy class" vehicles, and maneuverability, maneuverability (and this is also protection, sometimes more effective than armoring) is lower than that of light armored vehicles, technical and rear support is many times more complicated.
For example, in the course of specific military operations in Syria, unarmored pick-up trucks are successfully used.
MRAP Typhoon also can not completely replace the BTR-82 or the promising Boomerang, they are several for different tasks.
MRAP is more suitable for escorting columns, but due to its size and weight, although it is relatively heavily protected, it will be very vulnerable when operating in combat near the front edge, as well as when driving off-road, through difficult, especially marshy, terrain water barriers, etc.
so that tanks (and armored personnel carriers, etc.) are different, tanks are important.

By the way, during the Second World War, the T-60 and T-70 were quite successful, which did not shine with the thickness of armor and the power of the guns, but they were nimble, brisk and unpretentious, which is the best thing for reconnaissance patrols ... good
Many proponents of indestructible armor and irresistible power would clearly suggest replacing the PM with pump-action shotguns laughing And what? Better! More powerful! Everything is clear here. BMPT in its configuration is just perfect for maintaining a database on a complex terrain - from dense urban areas, where not every tank can turn a tower, to gorges and other things.
Apparently, the elevation angles of the guns of the tank and BMPT you did not guess ... and the presence of automatic grenade launchers also suggests a minimum operating distance. Replace under the guise of 30mm to 40mm "Balkan" ...

Work began when concrete proposals were received from the ordering departments of the Ministry of Defense and development ministries. This happened with BMPT, when this combat vehicle was included in the “5-year plan of the most important research and development work on armaments and military equipment for 1986-1990.” This plan was binding on all state organizations and was provided with funding. The initiator of R&D for the development of a fundamentally new machine, as well as the concept of its combat use, was the Department of Tanks of the BA BTV, headed by Major General O. N. Brilev. "

There was infa that they would buy a BMP-T of the 90s (the most primitive and ancient), because it passed state tests .... but the more sophisticated ones did not participate ..., And there the combat module is vulnerable to small arms ..

Just the first one was more sophisticated, and the one that 72 is a cheap option based on a rework with the T-72.

Everything is very simple: the efficiency and security of the armata are provided by various tricky bells and whistles: such as active protection, a fire control complex, etc. etc. if on t90 put a cannon from armata, a fire control system, kaz, dz. and sprinkle all this with a certain number of lattice screens and a fodder niche for transporting ammunition that doesn’t fit in, then the resulting tank is inferior to the armature, but 2-3 times cheaper and much more familiar in parts. So do not rush.

Considering that we have about 15 thousand units with those tanks that are already in storage, it is possible and necessary to produce Armata, but to drive the series, why to the front? Such purchases, which are now not so relevant, although important, will cut the procurement of something more needed in other areas ... for example, in the purchase of the same SU-57. In the meantime, they’ll drive hundreds of Armats into the army, train the tankers, fix the flaws ... that is, by 20-22, Armata will be quite ready for mass production. And I'm not talking only about the Armata tank, but about the base of this platform, on which T-15 and T-16 and more than 20 types of armored vehicles will be made.

there are probably not improvements, but in general its strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion, it will fit perfectly as a commander tank among the new 90 at the moment, of course. if he also gets the drone shoved so generally perfectly.

Most likely, they will arm a separate tank regiment of a separate armored division. Say, Kantemirovskaya. And yet, yes, they will drive around the landfills, and then where it is warmer.

So this is the characteristic style of such recent reviews. "According to available information, a certain amount of some technology will be modernized in a sense." The military is in no hurry to disclose the meaning and dimensions of modernization, since they do not see much sense in it.
Despite this, the events considered will allow everyone to be stronger than twenty thousand of the spent year from the taiga to the British Seas. "

The main tank (in quantitative terms) remains T-72B3, I think 25% will be T-90M, and the remaining T-14 Armata .... in principle, they are doing everything right and are better for the budget. The T-72B3 turned out to be a very good tank (all the more, the testing is underway in Syria), the T-90 M will be a very serious rival for everyone, perhaps the best operating MBT in the world ..... well, the highlight is of course Armata (T-14 ) which will slowly displace the T-10 and partly the T-20 in 72-90 years ..........

    Here is a twofold feeling.
On the one hand, it is necessary to upgrade the existing equipment and this is correct.
On the other hand, it’s a shame that the new equipment is arriving too slowly.
On the third side, there are already a lot of models of tanks at the same time in service.
In addition, there is a huge number of tanks, the same T-72s, in storage, and it’s clear that they still won’t be able to upgrade what to do with the rest? write off?
Well, the last - if the T72bm3 is for a long time the basis of our tank forces, can we, in the sense of Russia, be able to withstand this very "conditional enemy"

Yeah. Armata will be the fourth type of tank. This means 4 types of spare parts and spare parts, 4 sets of fuels and lubricants, not to mention the preparation of pharmaceuticals, specialists and repair and maintenance bases. Our defense budget is very rich.

Real tanks do not have headlamps. Lockers are such a part of the tank that falls off on rough terrain in the first place, therefore they are usually made of rubber and this is correct, but if the tank is corton or plywood, then of course I don’t care where to glue them.

Yes, for a long time already put reinforced rubber on the fenders. In the 80s they began to set. Even in this article you can see it in the photo. Zhelezyaki fly off in rugged terrain and even on a tank road very often this happens and dust from the tracks will close all visibility. And about the inexhaustible supply of iron fenders, you are the young man who you tell your granny.
