According to the portal sina.com.cn, China's largest defense company, North Industries Corporation (Norinco), presented its new development - an active protection system for armored vehicles, reports "Warspot".
The system was named GL-5 and was installed on the VT4 tank, also known as MBT3000 during the presentation. The new system was shown at the Armor & Anti-armor exhibition, which Norinco Corporation is holding for foreign customers.
During the demonstration, the GL-5 system intercepted an anti-tank missile flying toward tank. According to the developers, the GL-5 consists of four launchers that provide circular protection, each of which contains 3 shells. The radar system of the system tracks objects within a radius of 100 m. If the object flies towards the tank, the system shoots two shells towards it, which destroy it with an air blast.
The first systems of active protection of tanks were developed in 1950 – 60-ies in the USSR at the Central Design Bureau No. 14. The first system called “Thrush” in the 1983 year was installed on the T-55A tank, but it never went into series. The first serial active defense system was the Israeli Trophy, developed in 2005 year to detect and destroy RPG missiles and shells fired at the tank. Today, active protection systems for armored vehicles have been developed in Israel, Russia, the USA, Turkey, and now in China.
