March 11 on the eve of the day of the memory of the Latvian corps, which is celebrated on March 16, in many schools of Latvia “patriotism lessons” are held. The teachers talk about how the Latvian legionnaires, along with German troops, fought in the SS ranks. Some exhibits of the private museum of the Latvian Volunteer Legion of the SS were even brought to one of the rural schools in Latvia: weapon, form, personal belongings.
The German command decided to include detachments of Latvian volunteers in the SS troops in 1943, after the defeat at Stalingrad. It was then that the Latvian SS Volunteer Corps was formed as part of the 15 and 19 grenadier divisions. The corps was to at least partially compensate for the lack of manpower in Army Group North.
The Latvian Volunteer Corps participated in punitive operations against Soviet partisans in the Pskov region in 1943. In March 1944, Latvian volunteers opposed the Red Army offensive near Leningrad. March 16 is celebrated as the day of the first collision of the Latvian SS Volunteer Corps with the Soviet troops.
The SS Grenadier 19 Division was defeated in April 1945, the 15 Division capitulated in May, being surrounded.
