Qatar ordered the construction of 7 ships for € 5 billion
The main contractor is the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri, which reported that the Qatar Navy will receive four corvettes, two patrolmen and one landing ship (LPD - Landing Platform Dock). It is known that corvettes will be supplied in a modification designed for air defense. The length of each corvette ordered will be about 100 m, displacement - 3000 t, patrol ships - about 60 m and 700 t, respectively. For the first time, Qatar’s order for these ships became known in June last year, Warspot reports.
The lion's share of the contract amount is allocated for the construction of the landing ship. It will be designed on the basis of the helicopter carrier Kalaat Beni Abbas (serving in the Algerian Navy) with a displacement of 9000 t, which, in turn, is a modernized version of the Italian landing ship of the San Giorgio type.
The contract is for six years, the construction of ships will begin as early as next year. The contract price includes 15-year warranty service, as well as the supply of equipment and weapons from subcontractors. For example, Leonardo will provide new ships with radar, combat and defense systems, as well as artillery weapons, while MBDA will supply Exocet MM40 Block 3, Aster 30 Block 1 and VL MICA missile systems to Qatar.
