Bulgarian prime minister asks European Commission to allow Bulgaria to remain gas transit
60
The chairman of the Bulgarian government, Boyko Borisov, during a meeting at the Bulgarian diplomats in Sofia, expressed the hope that the European Commission would approve the initiative of the Cabinet to extend the branch of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline to the Bulgarian territory. Earlier it was reported that such an initiative was expressed in the government of Bulgaria due to the fact that the country could face gas shortages by the year of 2019. From the statement of Boyko Borisov:
I told (the European Commission) that our Ministry of Energy is ready to sign a roadmap, on the basis of which about 15,7 billion cubic meters of gas will go through the second branch of the Turkish Stream to Bulgaria. We are waiting for a response letter from the EC, which may allow us to start negotiations on the construction of a gas pipeline branch.
This rhetoric of the Bulgarian Prime Minister says that Bulgaria has completely lost its sovereignty and is forced to expect "mercy" from European bureaucrats. This is despite the fact that it was the European bureaucrats who forced official Sofia to abandon the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline, which would bring gas to Bulgaria directly from Russia.
Boyko Borisov:
Now the whole region may be dependent on Turkey. This is all the more important because everyone knows about the nature of relations between the EU and Turkey. We are ready to weigh everything and think it over together with the European Commission. Only those who hide their heads in the sand pretend that they do not understand the simple thing: as soon as the Turkish Stream is commissioned, our country will become only a consumer, not a transit country. What, then, should we do with investing in 5-6 billion euros in the gas distribution system? We have to stay in the game. I report this to the European Commission.
