German Foreign Minister: US trying to push Russia into a corner
42
German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel runs the risk of invoking the wrath of the Western press and becoming on par with other “Kremlin agents”. According to Gabriel, it is necessary to work out the issue of a possible phased lifting of anti-Russian sanctions. For this, in the opinion of the head of the German Foreign Ministry, it is necessary to link the lifting of sanctions with specific points of the Minsk agreements.
In accordance with the EU decision, the Minsk agreements must be executed on 100% before sanctions can be lifted also on 100%. I think this is not feasible. It would be correct to gradually lift the sanctions in order to show that we should move towards peace. Despite the fact that much now speaks against this, I advocate a new Eastern policy and a policy of detente.
Sigmar Gabriel allowed himself more criticism of the US lawmakers who are promoting a new sanctions package against Russia. Gabriel noted that US foreign policy "is becoming a continuation of their economic policies." The German minister said that the actions of the United States are aimed at "driving Russia into a corner, pushing Russian gas out of Europe."
Gabriel:
They are thus trying to get the Europeans to buy their gas instead of Russian. But this will not work.
According to the German minister, everyone needs to put himself in the place of another. Sigmar Gabriel:
Everyone is talking about Putin, his wrong policy. But Putin believes that it was the West that let him down by starting negotiations on the Ukrainian Euro-Association without taking into account the interests of Russia.
